Phil Mickelson Makes History at Open Championship

Phil Mickelson Makes History at Open Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Phil Mickelson opened the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush with a 1‑under-par 70, navigating intermittent rain and firm winds in the first round. He followed with a 1-over-par 72 on Friday. That even-par score was enough for Mickelson to head to the weekend.
By doing so, Mickelson recorded his 103rd cut made in men's major championships, moving past Gary Player and into second on the list for the most all time. Since Mickelson's major debut at the 1990 U.S. Open, he has appeared in 127 majors. This year's Open moves him into a tie with Raymond Floyd, for the fifth-most appearances in a major.
Only Jack Nicklaus, with 131 cuts made, remains ahead of Mickelson. Nicklaus set that benchmark over a span stretching from the 1957 U.S. Open through the 2000 Masters. Nicklaus leads the list with the most appearances in the majors: 164. Both marks are likely to stand as the measure of career consistency for decades.
Mickelson has also displayed exceptional consistency. His 103 cuts made in 127 major starts is an 81% success rate. That even surpasses Nicklaus, who had a 79.8% success rate of making the cut in majors. Mickelson also produced a personal-best streak of 30 consecutive cuts made in majors between the 1999 PGA Championship and the 2007 Masters. Tiger Woods and Nicklaus, with 39, share the mark for consecutive cuts made in a major.
At Royal Portrush, Mickelson also notched his 21st made cut in 30 Open Championship appearances. In June, Mickelson expressed a desire to continue playing the majors if he qualifies. So, he may not be done in any of these categories just yet.

Man City Hold Firm Stance Over Ederson's Future Amid Galatasaray Interest

Man City Determined to Keep Ederson Despite Galatasaray Interest Manchester City have made it clear they want to retain their No.1 goalkeeper Ederson, amid growing speculation linking him with a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray. As reported by Sky Sports News, the club are yet to receive any formal offer and remain firm in their stance that Ederson is not for sale. According to Sky Germany, Galatasaray are confident they can get a deal done, with personal terms said to be 'verbally agreed' between the club and the player's agent. However, the reality inside City's camp paints a different picture. Ederson Focused on City Future During the pre-season tour, Ederson himself was quick to shut down rumours. He said: 'My future is here' and described the reports of a move away as '99% fake news.' The Brazilian added, 'My head is here. It stays with the City. It gives me everything to go back to the Premier League again and try to win the Champions League as well. My mind is staying in the club.' Photo: IMAGO This public commitment will no doubt be welcomed by manager Pep Guardiola, although the City boss has historically allowed players to leave if they express a desire to go. As things stand, Ederson has given no indication of that. Trafford Talks Highlight Squad Planning City are actively engaged in talks to re-sign former academy graduate James Trafford from Burnley. The club hold a £40 million buy-back clause, though current negotiations are aiming to settle on a lower figure. Trafford was sold in 2023 and has since emerged as a target for multiple Premier League sides, including Newcastle United who recently had a £27 million bid turned down. Trafford's potential return appears to be part of a broader goalkeeping contingency plan, with uncertainty surrounding the futures of both Ederson and back-up keeper Stefan Ortega. Ortega and Dubravka Among Alternatives Burnley, anticipating Trafford's possible exit, are already identifying replacements. City's Ortega, along with Newcastle's Martin Dubravka, have emerged as candidates. Both are in the final year of their contracts, making them viable and cost-effective targets. This level of forward planning is typical of City's transfer strategy, though it also underlines the shifting dynamics within their goalkeeping department. No Rush, But Decisions Loom City remain calm for now, knowing they hold the cards. Ederson is under contract, committed, and valued internally not just for his shot-stopping but his integral role in City's build-up play. Galatasaray may feel confident, but unless the player communicates a change of heart, a departure looks highly unlikely. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Manchester City fan's perspective, Ederson staying put is reassuring. He has been the backbone of City's success under Guardiola, and his sweeper-keeper style perfectly complements the tactical system. His quote about the rumours being '99% fake news' brings clarity and shows he's still hungry to fight for more trophies. The rumours around Galatasaray feel like agent noise, perhaps to generate leverage or test interest. City haven't received an official bid, and unless that happens, fans should not panic. What's intriguing is the Trafford angle. A buy-back implies long-term vision, and even though he may not be ready to start right away, having a quality understudy is smart, especially if Ortega decides to move on. Still, it raises the question: why would City move for Trafford now unless there's at least a small possibility Ederson could leave this summer or next? It might not be an immediate threat, but it suggests succession planning is underway. Guardiola's philosophy demands goalkeepers who can play with their feet, and Trafford fits that profile. As fans, we should take this as a signal that City are doing what elite clubs do best – thinking three steps ahead. Let Ederson lift more silverware while grooming the next one.

Alexander Isak Seeking Improved Newcastle Contract Amid Liverpool Transfer Rumors

Alexander Isak Seeking Improved Newcastle Contract Amid Liverpool Transfer Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Liverpool reached an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign Hugo Ekitike this summer, and the French striker will soon be announced as a new player for the Reds. Liverpool were after Newcastle United's Alexander Isak this summer, but after the Ekitike news, the deal for the Swedish striker seems less likely. According to Ben Jacobs, Liverpool still wants Isak and plans to place a bid for the striker. While the rumors between the Premier League champions and Isak continue, Newcastle are monitoring a plan to keep their striker for longer. His current contract expires in June 2028. The striker arrived at Newcastle in the summer of 2022 from Real Sociedad for a fee of around $84.9 million. While rumors suggest Isak's exit from Newcastle nears, the representatives of the player have worked on a contract extension with an improved salary. Isak Seeks Lucrative New Contract The Athletic reports that Isak's representatives have been eager to ask Newcastle for improved wages. His performances with Newcastle have led to him becoming one of the most highly desired strikers in world football. Chris Waugh reports that despite Newcastle setting a plan to discuss a contract extension for Isak, the club has yet to progress in working towards a new contract for their striker. Isak is one of the top earners at Newcastle United, and the club may not be able to afford increasing the player's wages, let alone offer a lucrative new contract. Newcastle would need to potentially sell players and decrease the wage bill to offer Isak a new contract with a significant increase in wages. While Newcastle have remained firm in not selling Isak this summer, the club may be open next summer, if their striker does not agree to a new contract. What's Next for Newcastle United? Newcastle United will continue their pre-season after losing 4-0 to Celtic FC over the weekend. The Magpies have five more friendly matches before their first Premier League game of the 2025-26 season. They will travel to Asia for three friendly matches. They will take on Arsenal in Singapore at the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday. Newcastle will travel to South Korea for two friendlies. They first play the K-League XI on July 30 at the Suwon World Cup Stadium. On August 3, Newcastle United take on Tottenham at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. They return to England after the Spurs friendly to play two friendly matches at St. James' Park against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid. Newcastle United pre-season schedule July 27: Newcastle United vs Arsenal (Singapore National Stadium ) July 30: Newcastle United vs K-League XI (Suwon World Cup Stadium) August 3: Newcastle United vs Tottenham (Seoul World Cup Stadium) August 8: Newcastle United vs Espanyol (St. James' Park) August 9: Newcastle United vs Atlético Madrid (St. James' Park) This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 21, 2025, where it first appeared.
