‘CRIMINAL' INTELLIGENCE: Top cop spooks, barring one, granted bail
The seventh, Crime Intelligence CFO Philani Lushaba, was remanded in custody.
National CI head Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo and others were arrested by the Independent Directorate Against Corruption.
Those arrested:
- Major General Philani Lushaba, CI's chief financial officer (his second arrest in two weeks).
- Major General Josias Lekalakala, the Gauteng head of CI.
- Major General Nozipho Madondo, the head of the analysis centre.
- Brigadier Dineo Mokwele, whose appointment as a technical support system manager is at the core of the charges.
- Brigadier Phindile Ncube who is in charge of the vetting office.
- Major General Sydney Gabela who works for the police's technology services.
Acting Chief Magistrate VLM Mahlangu remitted Khumalo, Madondo, Lekalakala, Gabela, Ncube, Mokwele on bail of R10 000.
Because of Lushaba's arrest last week in another criminal matter, his application was dismissed.
He was remanded in custody and must bring a formal bail application anew.
All seven indicated their intention to plead not guilty on charges of fraud and corruption, with four counts of each alleged offence detailed in the charge sheet.
IDAC prosecutors did not oppose bail.
However, they told the court they intended to show that Khumalo, Lushaba, Madondo, Lekalakala, Gabela, and Ncube acted in common purpose to appoint Mokwele contrary to anti-corruption laws.
Mokwele is being charged with corruption for accepting the gift of the job as brigadier, which prosecutors appear set to argue was an undue gratification.
The fraud charges stem from misrepresentations and false information supplied during Mokwele's appointment process and during statements the accused made to the public, the National Treasury and internally within the police.
The matter will return to court on 13 August.

There's been an explosive fallout to the first cricket ODI between Australia and South Africa, with Adam Zampa copping an official warning from the ICC and Proteas all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen reported for a suspect bowling action. He won't be allowed to play ICC-sanctioned games until being cleared. It's the same situation that Australian spinner Matt Kuhnemann faced when he was reported after the second Test against Sri Lanka earlier this year. Kuhnemann was later cleared and allowed to continue bowling after being tested. Prenelan Subrayen reported for third time in career It's the third time Subrayen has been reported after his action was first deemed suspect more than a decade ago. In December of 2012, Cricket South Africa (CSA) placed him under rehabilitation after two separate independent tests showed his action to be illegal, but he was cleared to bowl again in January of 2013 after re-testing. The off-spinning all-rounder was then reported twice in the following two years during matches, before he was eventually cleared to resume bowling after having his action examined at South Africa's national performance centre in March of 2016. In June he earned his first Test appearance for South Africa against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, and was then handed his first ODI cap in Cairns on Tuesday. It comes as another blow for the touring South Africans, who have already lost star paceman Kagiso Rabada to injury with two more games to be played in Mackay on Friday and Sunday. After losing the T20 series 2-1, the Proteas are eyeing revenge in the ODI format. The incident occurred in the 37th over of the Proteas' innings, when Zampa used inappropriate language after a misfield and overthrow off his bowling. The audible obscenity was picked up on the stump microphone and broadcast to the TV audience. Zampa admitted the offence and accepted the sanction, and no formal hearing was required. Players are suspended if they attract four demerit points within a 24-month period. Zampa took 1-58 in his 10 overs in Cairns, as well as making 11 with the bat. with agencies
