Car was found in an Everglades canal. Hours later, Broward cops found dead body

A man's body surfaced in a west Broward canal in the Florida Everglades early Thursday morning, prompting a swift response from rescue divers and drones. Deputies responded to reports of a submerged vehicle near Krome Avenue and U.S. Highway 27 around 9 p.m. on Wednesday and found a Chevy Tahoe underwater, Broward Sheriff's Office told the Miami Herald. The agency's dive team, missing persons unit, marine patrol and drone unit were deployed to locate the SUV when, hours later, the dead body turned up. Marshall Jones, owner of Mack's Fish Camp, an air boat tour business located on the same stretch of canal, was the first to phone authorities and guided rescue crews when they arrived. 'I saw fresh skid marks and disturbance on the side of the levy and bubbles in the canal,' Marshall Jones told the Miami Herald. Jones described the body as a man in his 30s. He told the Miami Herald he thinks the body was the driver and that he had been ejected from the SUV before he was found. BSO's Traffic Homicide Unit is now investigating how the sunken car and its driver ended up in the canal. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre's family says Trump 'should never consider giving Maxwell any leniency'

The family of Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre is urging President Donald Trump not to consider "any leniency" for Ghislaine Maxwell as she seeks a way out of prison for her role in the disgraced financier's crimes. While speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday, Trump revealed Epstein "stole" Giuffre while she was working at his Florida estate decades ago. "I think she worked at the spa," Trump said as he departed Scotland, referring to Giuffre. "He stole her, and by the way, she had no complaints about us, as you know, none whatsoever." The revelation further peeled back the curtain on the narrative surrounding Epstein's years of sexual abuse towards underage girls before his suicide in 2019, especially for Giuffre's family, who have spent decades looking for answers. "It makes us ask if [Trump] was aware of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell's criminal actions, especially given his statement two years later that his good friend Jeffrey 'likes women on the younger side, no doubt about it,'" Giuffre's two brothers and her sisters-in-law told The Atlantic. "We and the public are asking for answers; survivors deserve this." For years, Giuffre remained one of the key voices in holding those within Epstein's web accountable before she died by suicide in her Western Australia home in April. Giuffre first came forward publicly with her allegations after an initial investigation into Epstein resulted in a controversial sweetheart deal that ended with the disgraced money manager receiving an 18-month Florida jail sentence. "Virginia cooperated with the authorities," her family said. "She endured death threats, threats against the lives of her children and family, financial ruin, and her physical and mental well-being were destroyed. She never backed down; she hoped that her strength would inspire other survivors to find the courage to come forward." Civil litigation brought by Giuffre alleged she was recruited by Maxwell while working as a spa attendant at Mar-a-Lago in 2000. Her family told the outlet what was supposed to be a fun summer job ended with Giuffre being sex-trafficked. Trump has previously said he was not involved in Epstein's sex crimes. He and Epstein reportedly fell out of touch in 2004 – two years before Epstein's initial arrest – after Trump outbid Epstein on a coastal Florida estate, according to The Palm Beach Post. The president also added this week that he banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago after he was caught poaching employees from Trump's staff – including Giuffre. "He took people," Trump said. "I said, 'Don't do that anymore,' you know, they work for me. And he took beyond that. He took some others. And once he did that, that was the end of him." "President Trump was directly responding to a question posed by a reporter about Ms. Guiffre – he did not bring her up," the White House said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "The fact remains that President Trump kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his club for being a creep to his female employees." Giuffre's family – Sky and Amanda Roberts, and Danny and Lannette Wilson – told The Atlantic they are still "reeling" from her suicide and are worried about Maxwell's bid for immunity in exchange for information. "The government and the President should never consider giving Ghislaine Maxwell any leniency," Giuffre's family wrote. Last week, Maxwell took center stage after she met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to answer questions surrounding the case. Days earlier, she was slapped with a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee asking her to testify on Aug. 11. Her attorney has since said she will only testify if granted immunity, which the panel rejected. "If our sister could speak today, she would be most angered by the fact that the government is listening to a known perjurer, a woman who repeatedly lied under oath and will continue to do so as long as it benefits her position," Giuffre's family told The Atlantic, referring to Maxwell. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence for her role in procuring underage girls for Epstein to sexually abuse. She has recently appealed to Trump to pardon her sentence – a possibility the president has previously said is within his right to consider, but he has not been asked to do so yet. However, a senior administration official told Fox News Digital that "no leniency is being given or discussed. That's just false. The President himself has said that clemency for Maxwell is not something he is even thinking about at this time." Maxwell's attorney and Giuffre's family did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. Maxwell's legal team is also asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear an appeal of her 2021 conviction – a decision the court is set to discuss in a private conference on Sept. 29. In light of the recent conversations toying with the possibility of Maxwell receiving an incentive in exchange for her testimony, Giuffre's family is imploring officials to not take the bait, while asking the Trump administration to maintain its promises of accountability and transparency. "The government and the President should never consider giving Ghislaine Maxwell any leniency," Giuffre's family said. "Maxwell destroyed many young lives, and she was convicted for only a fraction of the crimes she actually committed."

Why Donald Trump left phone messages for Jeffrey Epstein. Here's what we know

When Palm Beach police searched Jeffrey Epstein's island mansion in 2005 after a report that Epstein had sexually abused a minor, they seized several message pads from his kitchen, office and elsewhere. Amid the messages, which ranged in dates from 2002 to 2005, were two left for Epstein from Donald Trump. Trump's Justice Department announced on July 7 that the tranche of Epstein documents it has does not contain a "client list" and that they won't be released. The messages confiscated in 2005 from Epstein come from Palm Beach County State Attorney's documents released to The Palm Beach Post during its 2019 investigation, "Epstein: the first failure." Trump has never been accused of any wrongdoing involving Epstein's crimes. More: Is Trump in Epstein documents as Elon Musk's tweet says? President has already appeared When were the Trump messages for Epstein left and why? The notes appeared amid others dated around the time Trump and Epstein vied in a bankruptcy bidding war for former healthcare magnate Abe Gosman's manse on Palm Beach. Trump bested Epstein and Mark Pulte, son of the founder of Pulte homes, for the 43,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom estate on 6 oceanfront acres at 515 N. County Road along the storied "Raider's Row." Trump's bid of $41.35 million won the real estate. Epstein had bowed out when the price hit $38 million. What the Trump phone messages say The communications, usually taken when someone calls, contain only Trump's phone number and are addressed to "J.E." They are not dated but appear in a long number of images dated between Nov. 11 and Nov. 20, 2004. The auction took place on Nov. 15, 2004. It's unclear whether Trump was trying to negotiate over the auction of the Gosman house. Both marked at 5:18 p.m., but appear to be different handwriting so it's not clear whether they were calls on the same day. Being on Epstein's message pads is not evidence of any wrongdoing. Other names that appeared include Jes Staley, former executive at JPMorgan and Barclays; magician David Copperfield; physicist Lawrences Krauss; and former Hollywood producer and convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein. None of those men has been accused of being part of Epstein's crimes. Staley admitted in March 2025 that he had had sexual relations with a member of Epstein's staff at Mark Epstein's home and claimed he had no knowledge of Epstein's "monstrous activities." Mark Epstein is Jeffrey's brother. Regarding Elon Musk tweet: Trump has appeared in other Epstein docs but nothing nefarious Trump has appeared in other public documents regarding Epstein, such as the financier's flight logs from the 1990s when Trump took several flights with his family members. Many of the documents were seized as part of the 2005 police investigation into a sexual abuse allegation by a 14-year-old. She and her stepmother made a report to Palm Beach police in March 2005. The search of Epstein's home occurred in October that year. Police eventually amassed dozens of minor girls and young women as potential witnesses, but instead of charging Epstein himself, Palm Beach County State Attorney Barry Krischer chose to take the case to a grand jury. The move was highly unusual. More: Jeffrey Epstein 2006 grand jury documents are public. Read for yourself what happened What emerged from the secret proceeding was a single solicitation of prostitution against Epstein. Only two victims testified and were directly called prostitutes by prosecutors, according to transcripts released in summer 2024 as part of a nearly 5-year-long Palm Beach Post lawsuit. Trump told New York magazine in 2002 that "I've known Jeff (Epstein) for 15 years. Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.' But when Epstein was arrested in 2019 on sex trafficking charges, Trump said, "I'm not a fan." The president said he'd cut ties with the predator 15 years earlier, presumably around the time of the messages. How Trump and Epstein knew each other Trump and Epstein have been photographed partying together in the 1990s. Epstein's home at 358 El Brillo Way was less than two miles from Mar-a-Lago. Epstein bought his mansion and moved to live on the island part time in 1990. Trump bought Mar-a-Lago in 1985. Trump was about six years older. Epstein pleaded guilty to two prostitution-related felonies in Palm Beach County in 2008. He served 13 months at the jail, much of that time on 12-hour-a-day, six-days-a-week work release. He was found hanged to death in his Manhattan jail in August 2019, weeks after being arrested by federal authorities on sex trafficking charges.
