No contest as Warner wins duel of illustrious Aussies

The eagerly awaited first duel between two Australian batting greats in the Hundred has turned into a knock-out triumph for David Warner over his old mate Steve Smith.
After Warner had battled expertly to compile an unbeaten 70 for the London Spirit to put them in the driving seat in the much anticipated Saturday evening clash in Cardiff, Smith could muster just three as his early dismissal led to a collapse by the Welsh Fire.
Only a spectacular unbeaten 86 from Jonny Bairstow, aided by excellent support from Australian allrounder Chris Green (32no off 21 balls) in a magnificent century partnership, gave the hosts the glimpse of a most unlikely win but London held their nerve for a thrilling eight-run win.

Warner, quite indefatigable at the age of 38 as he scampered every run as if it might be his last, cracked two big straight sixes to go with eight fours off 45 balls, helping the Spirit amass an impressive 5-163 on what he called a "difficult, seamy" surface.
Certainly, it looked hard as Smith, opening up with Bairstow, succumbed on just the fifth ball he faced, his unlovely attempted scoop off Richard Gleeson ending in the hands of fine third-man.
That prompted the home side to implode, slumping to 6-55 with Anglo-Aussie Dan Worrall particularly impressive with his 2-31 off his 20-ball allocation.
But Green, who's been having a fruitful spell with Lancashire this summer, finally proved a worthy partner for Bairstow, hitting a six and a couple of boundaries which seemed to trigger his illustrious English partner to move into his best gimlet-eyed 'Here's Jonny' mode.

Bairstow was stupendous, peppering six sixes and six fours around off 50 balls as the Sophia Gardens crowd reached a fever pitch of excitement near the end.
Warner, who won the player-of-the-match 'hero' award and was hailed as "outstanding" by his Spirit skipper Kane Williamson, had to admit with a smile: "We tried to execute but Jonny was on fire!
"Credit to the way he and Greeny batted, they were superb."
The veteran left-hander reckoned he was still trying to get to grips with the 10-balls-per-end format but recognised the Justin Langer-coached Spirit's win as crucial after they'd lost their opening match at Lord's on Tuesday when he fell cheaply for just nine.

"Got a good bus ride tomorrow," he smiled.
He had been helped during the Spirit's innings by a sprightly cameo from fellow Aussie Ashton Turner, who hit 24 off 14 balls before he holed out to Smith off some impressive bowling from another green-and-gold import Riley Meredith (1-26).
In the day's other men's match, another Australian quick Jason Behrendorff impressed in the Oval Invincibles' nine-wicket home win over Manchester Originals, taking 2-16 off his 15 deliveries, including the key wicket of Jos Buttler.
Phil Salt (41 off 32) became the first batter to pass 1000 runs in the competition in the Originals' 128 before Will Jacks (61) and Tawanda Muyeye (59no) helped ease the Invincibles to 1-129 with 43 balls to spare.

South Africa spinner Subrayen reported for suspect bowling action

CAIRNS, Australia (AP) — South Africa off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen was reported for a suspect bowling action during the first one-day international against Australia, the ICC said on Wednesday. 'The match officials' report specified concerns about the legality of Subrayen's action,' the ICC said in a statement. Subrayen picked up 1-46 in his debut ODI against Australia on Tuesday as South Africa romped to a 98-run win to lead the three-match series 1-0. The 31-year old Subrayen has 14 days to undergo an independent assessment of his bowling action at an ICC-accredited testing laboratory. He is allowed to bowl until the results of his tests are known. The rule allows a bowler 15 degrees of elbow extension when he delivers the cricket ball. This is not the first time that the off-spinner has come under scrutiny. Cricket South Africa deemed his bowling action illegal in 2012 after conducting two separate tests before he was cleared to bowl in 2013 after going through remedial work and his bowling action was re-tested. He was later reported in 2014 during the Champions League T20 tournament in India and again during a domestic T20 tournament in 2015. He failed in a re-assessment of his bowling action in early 2016, but was cleared after getting clearance from a CSA's High Performance Centre and resumed bowling in March 2016. Subrayen made his test debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo this year and took four wickets in the first innings. South Africa is already without its ace pace bowler Kagiso Rabada for the ODI series in Australia due to injury. The Proteas will play the remaining two games at Mackay on Aug. 22 and Aug. 24. ___ AP cricket:

Scotland's Emma Orr channelling previous frustrations at Rugby World Cup

By James Reid Emma Orr is determined to channel the frustration of Scotland's previous Rugby World Cup experience when they open their 2025 campaign against Wales on Saturday. Orr is set to embark on her second World Cup, having been part of the squad that finished winless in New Zealand three years ago. That was Scotland's first World Cup appearance in over a decade, and the 22-year-old believes her side have developed significantly since then as they target progression from Pool B, also containing Wales, Australia, and Fiji. A crunch clash with familiar foes Wales in Salford on Saturday could go a long way to deciding whether that dream is realised and Orr wants to ensure there are no regrets this time around. 'We left that World Cup feeling pretty frustrated and fairly gutted with our performances,' she said. 'We've had to sit with that feeling for three years now so the last thing we want to do is leave this World Cup with the same feelings, so that's a huge motivation for us. "That was the first World Cup in 12 years the Scotland women's team had been at, so it's really cool to be going to our second one now. 'We didn't get the results in that one so we're looking to go one better this time and see how far we can go. "We've got so much potential, so much talent in this team that we want to do it justice, we want to do the coaching team justice and each other. 'I'm not saying that we didn't give everything last time, but I think I was definitely naive to the occasion. I think I know what it means more, and what it means more to me now." Orr will be central to Scotland's hopes of progression, with the centre arriving off the back of an impressive season with Bristol Bears in Premiership Women's Rugby. She will take her place in an exciting back line that also includes fellow youngster Fran McGhie on the wing, while the experienced Lisa Thomson will likely partner Orr in midfield. The 22-year-old was just a teenager as part of the squad that went to New Zealand for the previous World Cup and feels she has grown as a player and a person since then. 'I genuinely hadn't really been abroad ever, we didn't really do abroad holidays, so to be going to a World Cup on the other side of the world at such a young age was so daunting,' she said. 'I look back now and I'm like, 'I don't know how I did that', but it's credit to the team and the management that we have here that I just felt so looked after, which was so lovely. 'I feel like I've grown up loads since the last World Cup, the team taught me so many lessons. It's like having 30 big sisters, which is so lovely. 'I just continued to grow on the pitch, I'm learning so much from my fellow teammates, but also off the pitch they inspire me every day. It's just so great to be here." There was little to choose between the sides when Scotland last played Wales, with Bryan Easson's side edging a 24-21 win in Edinburgh during the Six Nations. And Orr expects another close encounter with the added pressure of a World Cup. "The fixture against Wales is always such an exciting fixture for us,' she added. 'I think both teams are on an upward trajectory with their squads at the moment and it's always a really close game, usually just a score in it. 'I am really looking forward to getting out there and putting in the performance."
