Callum McGregor pays Simon Murray the ultimate compliment as Celtic skipper champions Dundee standout

Daily Record30-04-2025
Celtic skipper Callum McGregor joined the bulging Simon Murray fan club and then backed the in-form striker to smash it for Scotland if Steve Clarke comes calling.. The 33-year-old is Scottish football's Cinderella man after rising from the Juniors to Premiership joint top scorer alongside Daizen Maeda on 16 goals. And the forward is vital to Dundee in their battle to avoid the relegation play-off trap door slamming in their face. McGregor has been left seriously impressed by the make-up of his fellow SPFA player of the year nominee and his knack for making the difference when it matters most. The Parkhead captain said: "He's done amazing. Probably the one if I had to pick outside Celtic , he has probably been the outstanding candidate. He's scored a lot of goals, he's scored in big games and he's actually played really well against us as well. "So he's given us problems. I always look at who's been good against us as well and try to pick somebody from that. He more than deserves his place here." Murray's form at his hometown club comes off the back of his talismanic role with both Ross County and Queen's Park. And McGregor sees no reason why the man who has walked a road less ordinary can't also find his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in the form of national team recognition. He added: "I think he's done amazing. He's the type of guy that would represent Scotland in the best possible way. He works as hard as he possibly can. He's sprinting about the pitch constantly. He's always trying to help his team. "He's trying to set the tone. And then when you score that number of goals as well, then you know he's got a goal in him. Like I said, he'd probably be the perfect candidate. If he was going to get there in the summer, then who knows." Clarke will name his squad next month for the friendlies with Iceland and Liechtenstein and summer exhibition matches have often been a shot for national team bosses to think outside the box. McGregor reckons age is only a number for the forward as he aims to cap a remarkable climb through the ranks. He said: "You've seen everybody has different journeys and you see some of the England boys as well that have come in late on and done really well. Same with Scotland as well. "I don't think there should ever be an age limit on when you can get back in the squad or get your first cap or whatever it is. "If you're doing well at the moment - of course you need a bit of luck as well - then I don't think there should be a limit on that. If you're doing well and you deserve it, then you should be in."

Celtic outcast makes immediate impact at loan club as he's called ‘best player on the pitch'

But after just a few games at his new club, he's being hailed as the best player on the pitch. The Honduran winger had a productive first year at Parkhead in 2023/24 but last season he was sent on loan to Olympiacos for the second half of the campaign after making just 12 appearances for the Hoops, mostly from the bench. This summer the club were keen to try and move him on and last month he agreed to another loan switch, this time to Lech Poznan in Poland. The 23-year-old has so far played five times for his new loan club and last night he scored his first goal. Palma headed home an 83rd-minute equaliser against Korona Kielce and his performance in general impressed fans. One said: "Man, he impressively hustles in every match. Hopefully, success doesn't go to his head." Another said: "Luis Palma's first goal in Poland. May many more come." While this supporter said: "The best footballer on the pitch today, Luis Palma." An option to buy clause for Poznan was inserted into the deal for Palma at the end of the season. He penned a five-year deal with the Hoops when he arrived in 2023 and scored ten goals in 36 matches during his first season in Scottish football. Sarmiento launch a throw back shirt design inspired by Celtic Celtic paid Aris Thessaloniki a fee of £3.5million for the player, who can also play centrally as well as out wide. When joining Poznan, Palma insisted that it was he who had pushed to leave Celtic Park. He said: "I am very happy with the move. I'm delighted to be joining my new club and it was all done very quickly. "I spoke with Celtic and it was my decision to look elsewhere. "I don't know too much about the Polish League, except that it's a good league, with big stadiums and big clubs. "I am going to learn a lot about football there. My goal is to play as much as possible and make a good impression. "I spoke to Reinaldo Rueda about the move, but I did so more as a friend." United striker Sapsford facing up to four weeks out

Dundee United striker Zac Sapsford is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury against Rapid Vienna. The forward won his side a penalty in their Conference League defeat at Tannadice on Thursday night but strained an ankle ligament in the been replaced by Amar Fatah in the squad for Sunday's League Cup game against Kilmarnock, manager Jim Goodwin confirmed the extent of Sapsford's injury. "Fatah is in the team today because of the injury to Zac Sapsford that he picked up in the build-up to the penalty where he got wiped out," Goodwin said. "That's a major disappointment for us because he's been a real key player for us up until now."It's a strained ankle ligament injury so those types of injuries can take anything from two to four weeks. "He's a young lad, he'll heal quickly. Majorly disappointed not to have him in a really important game today."

Jamie Vardy tipped to join Celtic for the season – but there's a catch

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JAMIE VARDY has been tipped to go to Celtic for a season under former coach Brendan Rodgers. But there are not one but potentially two major stumbling blocks to the move, according to a pundit. 1 Brendan Rodgers worked with Jamie Vardy when head coach of Leicester Credit: AFP Vardy, 38, is a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of the season. He has been linked with moves to Saudi Arabia, MLS and at one point was mentioned as a potential target for Rangers. But in recent weeks his name has appeared in connection with a move to Celtic. That's in part because Brendan Rodgers doesn't appear to be 100 per cent sold on Adam Idah while new signings Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand can be considered as more long-term projects, particularly so in the case of Osmand. The Hoops reportedly had a bid of £6.9million thrown out for Romanian striker Louis Munteanu last month but in Vardy they would be able to obtain a cheaper alternative to add firepower in front of goal. Former Celtic striker Andy Walker thinks even at his age, Rodgers could get another season out of Vardy and he would be a potent striker. Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, he said: "Brendan Rodgers would know the player, his ability, his fitness levels. "I know he's 38 but I'm sure you could get another season out of him if he is still really fit, well and sharp. No one would know that better than Brendan Rodgers. "Whether he is on the list, I'm sure they've got strikers they are looking at." But fellow pundit and ex-Rangers coach Billy Dodds thinks Vardy's wage demands could make a move difficult - combined with the fact that he might not even start every week. Sarmiento launch a throw back shirt design inspired by Celtic Dodds said: "He would cost a lot in wages but he wouldn't cost a lot in transfer fee because he's a free. It wouldn't be a daft one, but they'll probably have other signing targets in the striking position before Vardy. "The one thing I would add is that I've been reading that he wants to play. I don't think he's guaranteed that at Celtic playing week in, week out. "When you get someone of that experience and he's not playing, I'm not saying he wouldn't be happy but he's already made it clear he wants to go somewhere and play every game before he finishes his career."
