Over 200 illegal bases along Sungai Golok border shut down

The Star04-05-2025

PASIR MAS: More than 200 unauthorised bases along the Malaysian side of Sungai Golok border have been shut down to combat cross-border crimes, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He said the move was part of the Strengthening National Border Control Committee's actions to tighten monitoring of the 103km border route.
"The closure of illegal bases and implementation of an omnipresent (comprehensive presence) approach by security forces have successfully reduced illegal border crossings.
"There are no significant numbers (of individuals crossing borders illegally) (and) the trend has been controlled since December," he told reporters after visiting the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Rantau Panjang here on Sunday (May 4).
Saifuddin Nasution said security control was further boosted with 819 personnel deployed in rotation for monitoring and raid operations in border hotspot areas.
"When we close illegal bases and conduct consistent inspections, we see drug supplies decrease slightly. But we can't become complacent as smugglers may find alternative routes," he said.
Saifuddin Nasution said a new trend of drug landings has been detected in Kuala Kedah and also Kuala Sanglang in Perlis, believed to be the syndicates' response to tightened border controls in Kelantan.
"I was informed last week about increased drug landings in Kedah. I'm investigating if this directly results from our Kelantan border crackdown," he said, adding that he would consult the Kedah police chief (Datuk Fisol Salleh) on the matter.
He said ongoing surveillance would monitor for any rebuilt illegal bases, noting that smugglers constantly adapt their methods to evade detection. - Bernama

Trump bans use of masks at LA protests over immigration raids

A protester in Los Angeles is highlighted against tear gas and flash-bang fumes when clashes broke out with immigration and customs officials conducting a raid. (AP pic) MOSCOW : The US authorities will prohibit wearing masks at protests against the background of unrest in Los Angeles, US president Donald Trump said on Sunday, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported. The decision comes a day after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that 2,000 National Guard troops would be deployed to Los Angeles following clashes between protestors and immigration and customs (ICE) agents conducting raids to identify undocumented migrants in downtown Los Angeles In a posting on Truth Social today, Trump thanked the National Guard for their work amid the unrest, and said: 'Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why? 'Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest … These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED … Again thank you to the National Guard for a job well done,' Trump said. California is traditionally considered a Democratic stronghold, and Trump has repeatedly criticised the state. Last month, he threatened to cut state funding over the participation of a transgender athlete in competitions. The administration has previously cancelled US$126.4 million in flood prevention projects and criticised California's handling of wildfires. On Saturday, California governor Gavin Newsom threatened that the state could forego paying federal taxes in response to possible massive federal funding cuts from the Trump administration.

Govt under fire from opposition, allies over telco data handover demand

THE Malaysian government is facing mounting criticism over an alleged directive requiring all telecommunications companies (telcos) to hand over comprehensive mobile user data, including call records, internet usage, and GPS location history. MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has voiced serious concern over the move, warning that it poses a significant threat to citizens' privacy and could lead to the misuse of personal information. He rejected the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) claim that the data had been 'de-identified,' arguing that metadata, such as GPS coordinates, call logs, and IP addresses, could still be easily traced back to individuals, especially when cross-referenced with other digital sources. He believed MCMC is trying to downplay the issue by saying, :Don't worry, the data has been de-identified and contains no personal details that can identify individuals.' 'But I want to ask, de-identified, really? Don't try to fool us. If you're collecting data on who we call, when we call, how long we talk, our IP address, and our GPS coordinates, the exact latitude and longitude, time and day, anyone with access to this data can easily match it back to our identities. Especially now, with e-wallets, CCTV, Touch 'n Go, and banking records, it's incredibly easy to pinpoint someone's identity,' he said in a video posted to Facebook on Saturday. From the opposition, Pejuang raised similar concerns. Pejuang information chief, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, criticised the move as unjustified and questioned the true motive behind collecting such intrusive data. 'What exactly does MCMC intend to do with this data? Their excuse is to promote local tourism? But what is the real motive?' he said. 'Not only is this a privacy issue, but there is also the risk of this data being misused or leaked to other parties,' Rafique added. 'MCMC should stop trying to cover up a huge scandal with a tiny sieve,' he said via Facebook on Sunday. Both Pejuang and MCA, despite being on opposing sides of the political spectrum, are united in calling for greater transparency and accountability from the government on this issue. Their joint concern marks a rare moment of bipartisan unity in defending Malaysians' right to privacy and democratic safeguards. —June 8, 2025 Main image: Securiti

A TRAGIC boat accident off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, has claimed five lives, including a married couple whose bodies were found drowned near North Port early this morning. The incident, which occurred during a test drive of the boat, involved six people. Three died at the scene, one survived, and two were initially missing.
