Richard Madeley admits what 'saved his 39-year marriage' to Judy Finnigan

Metro13-05-2025

Richard Madeley has revealed how co-presenting live TV with his wife Judy Finnigan helped save their marriage.
The 69-year-old presenter is best known for hosting Good Morning Britain on ITV alongside Susanna Reid.
But, speaking to his daughter on the premiere episode of Chloe Madeley: A Family Affair on ITVX, Richard shared a candid insight into his 35-year marriage with Judy.
Recounting moments of strain in his relationship, he said: 'Well, I mean, sometimes, you'd have a row. And you'd get to work not talking. But the show was a cure.'
He continued: 'I mean, it wasn't, like, false, you actually did genuinely have to come on and do the double act. You would find that within maybe 15, 20 minutes of going on air.'
At this point, Chloe cut in by saying 'the ice thawed' to which Richard replied: 'You'd just forgotten all about it because you were both focusing on the job. And so it was a very good way of processing a row,' the Express reported.
Richard, who was a contestant on the 2021 series of I'm A Celebrity, married Judy in 1986.
In the same year, they welcomed their first son before Chloe was born the following year.
They then hosted This Morning together from 1988 for more than a decade as well as presenting Richard and Judy.
In November last year, Richard revealed how he and Judy sleep in separate beds after 38 years of marriage.

Speaking to Kate Thornton on her White Wine Question Time podcast, Richard said: 'When I'm doing Good Morning Britain, I sleep in the spare room.'
He added: 'I do probably sleep a little bit better in bed with Judy, but it's okay on my own.'
Richard explained that he wouldn't want his early morning starts to disrupt his wife's sleep, saying: 'I wouldn't think of doing that to Judy.
'Apart from anything else, Judy and her sleep, you do not mess with.'
He went on to talk about how his wife is 'really enjoying not doing telly', following her own admission that she would never appear on This Morning again. More Trending
This came after he revealed that a pest problem had forced Judy into the spare bedroom after mice came crawling out into their room at night.
Richard also shed light on how Judy is baffled by his morning routine to wake up for Good Morning Britain.
Appearing on This Morning in April last year to celebrate ITV show GMB's decade on air, he said: 'I'm paranoid about sleeping through.

'I have a ritual – I set them three times the night before and Judy says to me, 'What are you doing? You know it's set, what are you doing?' I say, 'I have to do this', otherwise I don't sleep.'

Coronation Street twist in ITVX release as the truth about Lisa's ex Becky is confirmed

This article contains spoilers for tonight's Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX. It was a tough day on Coronation Street for many of the residents in tonight's instalment of the ITV soap, as they said their goodbyes to Craig Tinker, following his murder last month. Ahead of his memorial service, DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) appeared to be struggling more than most, with Craig's brutal death bringing back painful memories of wife Becky's murder. In a bid to try and distract herself from the tough afternoon, Lisa decided to have a sort out, which drew Betsy Swain's (Sydney Martin) attention to some old files. As soon as she flipped one open, Lisa was on her, demanding that she mind her own business, leaving the teen concerned that her mum was having some kind of breakdown. With Betsy convinced that Lisa was hiding something, she later confronted her about the contents of the file, and Lisa explained that it contained information about Betsy's donor that she isn't legally allowed to see until she turns 18. However, Betsy wasn't convinced, and was soon caught rooting through the files by Carla Connor (Alison King). When Lisa returned home and found the files disrupted, she was horrified that Betsy had read the contents, and soon confessed to Carla what they really contained. She revealed that, before her death, Becky was being investigated by the anti-corruption unit, and Lisa was keen to keep that information from Betsy. Lisa emotionally opened up about how she and Becky had fought over the allegations the day Becky was killed, and though the investigation was dropped, she didn't get the funeral she deserved. Carla urged Lisa to be honest with Betsy, so she called her to the station to talk. However, when Betsy insisted that she hadn't read the letter because she wasn't interested in knowing who her sperm donor was, Lisa decided to keep quiet about what the letter was really about. More Trending Unfortunately, Betsy wasn't being entirely honest either, as she later revealed to Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) that she knew exactly what the letter was about. She confessed that she was convinced Becky's hit and run had been a coverup of some sort, and asked Lauren for her help in getting to the bottom of things. Novak Djokovic quit tennis in tearful confession to wife

Novak Djokovic quit tennis in tearful confession to wife Novak Djokovic actually decided to quit tennis in 2018 before a tearful plea from his family and team inspired a U-turn that saw him go on to win 12 more Grand Slam titles Novak Djokovic relaxes with his wife Jelena Djokovic (Image:) Novak Djokovic had previously decided to hang up his racket and informed his sponsors that he would be ending his tennis career, before a change of heart saw him sweep up an additional 12 Grand Slam titles. Back in 2018, with half of his major titles under his belt, the sceptre of disillusionment loomed over the Serb, following recurrent injuries and the end of his coaching partnership with Andre Agassi. ‌ The shock fourth-round exit to Hyeon Chung at the Australian Open was succeeded by elbow surgery for Djokovic, disrupting a career plagued by injury since the previous year. His return to the courts wasn't without setbacks; a loss to Taro Daniel at Indian Wells struck another blow. ‌ A subsequent defeat by Benoit Paire at the Miami Masters was Djokovic's tipping point, prompting a heart-to-heart with his team and wife, Jelena Djokovic, where he expressed his resolve to retire. In a candid interview with Slaven Bilic titled 'Failure of the Champion', Djokovic recounted how a transformative break in the Dominican Republic helped him overturn his retirement decision. In a 2020 conversation with journalist Graham Bensinger, Jelena relayed the gripping tale: "After that match, he wanted to quit. He gathered all the members of his team and told them, 'You know what: I'm done, I'm quitting.' We cried and told him that he couldn't do it, that it wasn't the right time. He didn't want to play tennis, and he didn't even want to see a ball pass in front of him." Djokovic was so devastated that his wife recalls a time following a significant loss when he instructed his then-agent Edoardo Artaldi to inform his sponsors, including Lacoste, about potentially ending his career. "It was a terrible loss," she said, reports the Express. Article continues below "And then he just, you know, gathered all of us and said, 'You know guys, I'm done.' And I was like, 'What?' And he goes like, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Edoardo, you can speak with my sponsors. "'I want to be clear with them. I don't know if I'm stopping for six months, a year, or forever. Just tell them if they feel like sticking around they can. If they don't, I'm happy. I just want to make sure everybody is OK with this.'". Yet, it was Djokovic's family, especially his wife and their children, Stefan and Tara, who became his motivation to reconsider retirement. Jelena mentioned how despite his initial reluctance, being around the sport casually through his family reignited his passion for tennis. ‌ "He didn't want to know anything about it," she explained. "But I love tennis and I take the kids to the court every day. On the third day, Novak arrived. "He saw we were having fun and that it wasn't a workout like what he had been used to for years. When Novak asked me if he could play and get a racket, I initially refused. "I started teasing him and told him that he had given up. That now it was our turn to play tennis. But eventually, he served, felt good, and then he returned each day until deciding to call his coach Marian Vajda to renew training." ‌ After a career-defining U-turn that led to an additional 12 Grand Slam titles and a record-breaking total of 24, the tennis legend's pursuit of a 25th triumph at the French Open came to a halt in the semi-finals, with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner besting him in straight sets. Post-match, the 38 year old sportsman sparked speculation about his future at Roland Garros with a poignant show of appreciation towards the crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier and a meaningful touch of the clay. Reflecting on the moment during his press conference, he confessed: "This could have been the last match ever I played here, so I don't know." Article continues below He continued, expressing his emotions: "That's why I was a bit more emotional even in the end. But if this was the farewell match of the Roland Garros for me in my career, it was a wonderful one in terms of the atmosphere and what I got from the crowd."
