Over 13,000 WiFi units installed under campus connectivity push, says Fahmi

SINTOK: More than 13,000 WiFi units have been installed across campuses nationwide under the government's campus connectivity initiative.
The Communications Ministry has given its assurance that internet access issues at public universities will be resolved by the third phase of the project.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative, now in its second phase, had so far delivered 13,470 units out of the 32,000 planned nationwide. Key beneficiaries include institutions such as Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
"To date, more than 13,470 WiFi units have been installed out of the 32,000 planned nationwide," he said after delivering a keynote address at the 'Unraveling the Dynamics of Media Freedom in the Digital Era' forum in UUM today.
Present were Malaysian Press Institute president Yong Soo Heong and UUM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan.
Fahmi said the second phase of the project is expected to be completed within the next five to six weeks.
"Once the second phase is done, there are several matters to be discussed with university managements. We will also review the implementation of the first and second phases.
"If any improvements are needed within individual campuses, they will be included in the third phase. We want to ensure students can enjoy high-quality internet access," he added.
Besides public universities, the WiFi initiative also involves polytechnics and community colleges, as part of the government's broader effort to expand internet access across educational institutions.
The third phase of the initiative is expected to begin later this year, with the tender process to follow once locations and campus requirements are confirmed.
"We will accelerate efforts to ensure all students can enjoy better internet access, InsyaAllah," Fahmi said.
The government, he added, remains committed to improving digital infrastructure to benefit students.
In January, Fahmi announced that the government allocated RM668 million to boost WiFi access at 23 public universities by installing more internet access points.

Aerospace, aviation booths prove a crowd puller at National TVET Day

MELAKA: The aerospace and aviation booths have become a crowd puller at the 2025 National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Day celebration, which kicked off yesterday. Over 20 booths related to the field attracted interest from various groups, including individuals without backgrounds in science, engineering, or technology, during the three-day programme held at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) here. Visitor Iqbal Ahmad Shukri, 20, said the booths provided insightful information and exposure, enhancing public understanding of TVET and showcasing available pathways to anyone interested in exploring them. The Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) undergraduate majoring in Islamic Finance and Banking said despite his non-technical field of study, the variety of booths at the event helped him gain a deeper appreciation for the development and impact of technology, especially in the aviation sector. 'For example, the booth featuring flight simulation provided us with a hands-on experience that ignited our interest in aviation. It not only informed us how to become pilots but also highlighted other aviation-related careers that many may never have considered,' he told Bernama. His friend, Muhammad Ikmal Tamimi Jamaludin, 21, said such programmes enhance his learning as a Technology Management student. 'Here, I can see the direction and potential of my course. More importantly, I now better understand what I've been learning, as my course includes subjects like electrical studies, information technology, and engineering – all of which are closely related to TVET,' he said. Admal Aviation College's Student Recruitment Officer, Mohammad Rizal Zalkaply, said large-scale programmes like this could create more opportunities for students, especially SPM school leavers, to explore further education in fields that are often less popular. 'Many want to enter into aviation but lack access to information and are often concerned about the costs involved in pursuing such studies. However, programmes like this provide an excellent platform to raise awareness among students about opportunities they may not have been previously aware of. 'For us exhibitors, this is also a great opportunity to share information about the many pathways available through TVET-related courses,' he added.

Communications Ministry plans to organise Project Sigma 2.0

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Communications is planning to organise Project Sigma 2.0 in collaboration with Google to help its six agencies to better understand the information consumption patterns and needs of Generation Z (Gen Z). Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he plans to invite Google to the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR) for the project, building on findings from the first Project Sigma held last May. 'There may be a Project Sigma 2.0 that covers more issues as we want media agencies to be stronger and better equipped to face changes, including those brought about by artificial intelligence (AI) technology. 'The previous project did not involve Bernama (Malaysian National News Agency), that is why I want to bring the findings from Project Sigma to be shared with agencies under the Ministry of Communications. 'In this context, the Broadcasting Department, Information Department, National Film Development Corporation, Bernama, IPPTAR and the Community Communications Department will be involved,' he told reporters after the ministry's monthly assembly at Menara Komunikasi here today. Present were Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. Fahmi said Project Sigma, a 10-week initiative by the ministry in collaboration with Google, also involved local media such as Sinar Daily, The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd (NSTP), The Star, and Sin Chew Daily. 'We invited these media companies to better understand Gen Z audiences. I want the lessons learned from Project Sigma to be shared and understood by our departments and agencies,' he said. On May 27, Fahmi suggested that IPPTAR work with Google to expand the project to other agencies and organisations, as the changing behaviours and needs of younger audiences require new approaches to information delivery.
