Over 13,000 WiFi units installed under campus connectivity push, says Fahmi
The Communications Ministry has given its assurance that internet access issues at public universities will be resolved by the third phase of the project.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative, now in its second phase, had so far delivered 13,470 units out of the 32,000 planned nationwide. Key beneficiaries include institutions such as Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
"To date, more than 13,470 WiFi units have been installed out of the 32,000 planned nationwide," he said after delivering a keynote address at the 'Unraveling the Dynamics of Media Freedom in the Digital Era' forum in UUM today.
Present were Malaysian Press Institute president Yong Soo Heong and UUM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan.
Fahmi said the second phase of the project is expected to be completed within the next five to six weeks.
"Once the second phase is done, there are several matters to be discussed with university managements. We will also review the implementation of the first and second phases.
"If any improvements are needed within individual campuses, they will be included in the third phase. We want to ensure students can enjoy high-quality internet access," he added.
Besides public universities, the WiFi initiative also involves polytechnics and community colleges, as part of the government's broader effort to expand internet access across educational institutions.
The third phase of the initiative is expected to begin later this year, with the tender process to follow once locations and campus requirements are confirmed.
"We will accelerate efforts to ensure all students can enjoy better internet access, InsyaAllah," Fahmi said.
The government, he added, remains committed to improving digital infrastructure to benefit students.
In January, Fahmi announced that the government allocated RM668 million to boost WiFi access at 23 public universities by installing more internet access points.

NADI Pulau Banggi boosts rural internet access and digital skills
KOTA KINABALU: The National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) in Pulau Banggi is transforming rural communities by providing essential internet access and digital training. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stated that the centre also offers facilities to support economic growth and digital entrepreneurship. 'Starlink technology at NADI Pulau Banggi delivers high-speed internet, with minimum speeds exceeding 100Mbps,' MCMC confirmed in a statement. The initiative, part of the NADI Malaysia Digital Inclusive Project, recently won the WSIS Prizes 2025 in the Capacity Building category. This award highlights the government's dedication to inclusive digitalisation, ensuring no community is left behind. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil visited the centre to assess progress and engage with local residents. He reviewed telecommunications improvements in Kudat, noting advancements in network coverage for Sabah's rural areas. The visit reinforced the government's focus on expanding digital access to drive socio-economic development. Pulau Banggi, home to 20,000 people, relies on fisheries, oil palm, and rubber as key economic activities. Accessible only by ferry or speedboat, the island lies 70 kilometres from Kudat. Kudat itself is located 180 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu, requiring a three-hour road journey. - Bernama

Finas committed to boost orange economy
The National Film Development Corporation (Finas) has said the emphasis on the "orange economy" as a driver for future growth shows the Madani Government's dedication to making the local creative industry more sustainable and globally competitive. Welcoming the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the House of Representatives, Finas chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib said as an agency under the Communications Ministry, Finas supports Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil's vision. This support will be demonstrated through high-impact initiatives designed to strengthen the country's creative industry ecosystem. "This includes empowering the production of high-value commercial content with export potential for international markets. "We will also support the development of local intellectual property (IP) through the Creative Content Fund (DKK) and the Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI). Furthermore, we will expand access to creative talent development through certification and commissioning. "Finas also plays a role in strengthening the industry's value chain, from pre-production and production to post-production, distribution, and content monetisation." In line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's mandate, Azmir said that Finas would place a special emphasis on the animation sector. "Our efforts will include implementing the DKK, which provides grant support for high-potential animation projects and local IP content. "FIMI will also be used as an incentive to attract investment in local and international content production, with a focus on exportable IP." Azmir also highlighted that Finas was focused on implementing accredited certification programmes for local creative talent, ensuring they align with current market and technological needs. "We are also improving the licensing process for producers of animated feature films for cinema and television screenings. This is to ensure they meet standards and have smoother, more structured market access." Azmir added that Finas, in partnership with the Communications Ministry, will continue to strengthen policies, programmes, and initiatives that support the 13MP vision. "This effort focuses on achieving measurable outcomes in job creation, increased local IP value, and industrial competitiveness at regional and international levels." He also mentioned that Finas, through the DKK fund, has championed IP ownership since its introduction. "Generating revenue from IP is key to the industry's growth and sustainability. Besides grant support, FIMI rebates are also crucial for local content projects, including animation IP and animation services." Finally, Azmir noted that Finas' ongoing international market access and export initiatives have garnered significant attention from creative industry leaders and are now "bearing fruit".

Penang plans RM300mil tuna port in Bagan Ajam
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang government plans to build a new tuna and deep-sea fishing port in the state, which meets international standards, to increase tuna landings. State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said the government has identified an area in Bagan Ajam for the new tuna port and discussions are already underway. "The state has earmarked land in Bagan Ajam for the development of the new port, with an estimated development budget of RM150 million to RM300 million. "We are currently in talks with several investors for funding," he said. He added that, based on the timeline, the port could be completed within one-and-a-half to two years, pending technical approval from the District Land Office and other relevant agencies, as well as private sector allocation. "We hope the new port can revive the glory days of Penang's tuna industry, much like the 1990s," he told Bernama today. Fahmi highlighted several benefits of the new port, including its exclusive focus on tuna fishing, meaning tuna vessels will not have to compete for docking space with commercial ships. The port will also offer lower charges, as it will not operate on a commercial basis. Regarding competition, he said that tuna ships would not need to compete for docking space because the new port would be dedicated solely to tuna landings. It is expected to attract foreign tuna ships due to its user-friendly facilities. The new port will meet European Union (EU) standards and will include special facilities tailored specifically for tuna fishing, unlike existing ports, which offer general facilities and lack focus on tuna landings. "According to preliminary data from the Malaysian Fisheries Department, the total tuna landings in Penang last year were 431,000kg, valued at RM7.758 million. "The main landing point is currently the Butterworth deep-water wharf," Fahmi said. He also noted that Malaysian vessels had landed tuna in Mauritius last year, with a total of 4,295,758kg of tuna, including 3,749,478kg from local vessels. So far this year, the total tuna landings in Penang, including foreign vessels, have reached 1,445,120 kg, with an estimated value of RM26 million. Fahmi believes that with the dedicated tuna port in Bagan Ajam, tuna landings could increase by 30 to 50 per cent within five years of its operation. He also envisions Penang becoming a tuna processing hub, where foreign vessels can land their catch for processing before exporting it to Taiwan or Japan.– BERNAMA
