Dunne wins at wet Spa to reclaim F2 title lead

Yahoo27-07-2025
Ireland's Alex Dunne has returned to the top of the Formula 2 standings by winning the rain-hit feature race in Belgium.
Dunne had qualified on pole position at Spa-Francorchamps on Friday and the race was started behind the safety car.
However, when racing got underway the McLaren Development Driver mastered the wet conditions to win his third F2 race of the season.
British Red Bull Junior driver Arvid Lindblad was second and Czech driver Roman Stanek was third.
Dunne, 19, now leads the F2 standings by points 15 over Richard Verschoor, who failed to score along with title rival Jak Crawford.
"I had to work really hard for that one," said Dunne.
"It was really tough."
Dunne secures Formula 2 pole position in Belgium
It had been a weekend of dominance for Dunne in Belgium, who topped the practice session and qualified on pole in dry conditions by 0.421 seconds.
He gained two points of Verschoor for pole position and chipped another two points out of the Dutch driver's lead by finishing seventh in the reverse grid sprint race.
Rain hit the Belgian circuit on Sunday morning, to the extent the Formula 3 race had to be cancelled, but conditions cleared up to allow the F2 race to get under way behind the safety car.
Dunne pulled out a four-second lead once racing started and, despite a brief challenge from Japan's Ritomo Miyata, he maintained his lead for the mid-race pit stops.
His Rodin Motorsport team produced a fast pit stop to get him back into the race in fourth place, behind drivers who had yet to stop.
Dunne then produced a stunning overtake around the outside of Pouhon bend past Ollie Goethe to re-take the lead and pulled away from Stanek and Lindblad.
There was a late safety car for Sebastian Montoya, who spun at Eau Rouge with five laps remaining.
The Colombian's car was still being recovered when Goethe's engine expired with two laps to go, which meant race control red flagged the race and Dunne was able to take the chequered flag unchallenged.
It was a third feature win of the season for Dunne in his most complete Formula 2 weekend to date and he was rewarded with the championship lead.
The 11th round of 14 takes place in Hungary next weekend.

Journie Rewards Creates Life-Changing Experiences for Driving Academy Families

Financial Support, New Equipment and Unmatched Mentorship Highlight Summer to Remember Jack Klym celebrates win JDA meets Kyffin Simpson INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 14, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Through its work with the Journie Driving Academy, Journie Rewards is changing the lives of three Canadian children and their families by helping them pursue a career as a race car driver. Decklan Deonarine, Jack Klym and Nathan Reddish are speeding through their karting schedules across Canada this season in their new Journie Rewards branded firesuits and liveries. With additional financial support from Journie Rewards, mentorship from 17-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champions Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) and the trip of a lifetime last month to Toronto, JDA drivers are racing through a season they will never forget. To learn more about the JDA, visit Notes of Interest: Learning From Champions: Personally tailored mentorship programs provided by CGR are key to the success of JDA drivers. Whether its fitness programs provided through CGR's Human Performance Center, a beginner session on business best practices, or one-on-one time with Kyffin Simpson, driver of the No. 8 Journie Rewards Honda, and Bryce Aron and Niels Koolen, CGR's INDY NXT by Firestone drivers, the JDA drivers have learned a lot in a short amount of time. Periodic check-ins and year-long development continue to be a priority for the team as all three drivers approach the home stretches of their racing seasons. A VIP Toronto Weekend: All three JDA drivers attended the INDYCAR SERIES Indy Toronto weekend in July, getting a VIP experience courtesy of Journie Rewards. The drivers met Simpson in-person for the first time and cheered him on as he scored his first career INDYCAR podium in the race. The drivers also had a surprise meeting with Canadian motorsports legends Ron Fellows, James Hinchcliffe and Robert Wickens, all while getting a behind-the-scenes look at CGR's INDYCAR operations. An exclusive dinner downtown, complete with private racing simulator time, capped an incredible weekend in Canada's largest city. The Journie to Victory Lane: The JDA drivers have exceled on the track so far this season. Combining for nine wins, 11 poles and 22 podium finishes, the three drivers will work toward more wins and compete for championships as their seasons continue. Quoteboard: Dustin Klym, father of Jack Klym: "As parents, we viewed motorsport as an opportunity to develop our sons' individual abilities and character. Our goal was to give him the tools to reach beyond our family business, set and achieve his own goals. Inspiration and momentum are very powerful things, and this program delivers. The people at Journie Rewards and Chip Ganassi Racing are passionate about this program, and passionate about giving back to the next generation. We have built friendships and professional relationships that will carry Jack far into his future in motorsports. Thank you, Journie Rewards and Chip Ganassi Racing!" Kurt Reddish, father of Nathan Reddish: 'Being a part of the Journie Driving Academy has been a huge help in covering many of the karting expenses this year, especially since it's Nathan's first year in club racing. Without this support, it would have been much harder to afford team support and get the necessary seat time he needs to improve. One of the most exciting parts has been meeting and talking with the Chip Ganassi Racing team. Getting their perspective and tips on karting has really helped me understand more about what it takes to reach the next level. I don't think we would have received this kind of advice so early in Nathan's journey, and it's already made a big difference in how we approach race weekends. Nathan really feels like he is part of a team. This entire experience has been a dream come true for Nathan.' Clive Deonarine, father of Decklan Deonarine: 'Being part of the Journie Driving Academy has truly been life-changing for both Decklan and our family. Racing at a high level is an incredible opportunity, but it comes with costs that can be overwhelming for most families. The Academy's backing has taken a tremendous weight off our shoulders, allowing us to focus on Decklan's growth and performance instead of constantly worrying about how to fund the next step in his career. That support has opened doors to experiences we simply couldn't have accessed otherwise. It's also given him confidence knowing that a respected program believes in his talent enough to invest in him. For me as a parent, it's been a relief and a joy to be able to focus on supporting him emotionally and strategically, rather than being stuck in an endless financial juggling act. The Journie Driving Academy hasn't just eased the financial burden, it's accelerated Decklan's journey toward his dreams, given him invaluable experiences, and made this path feel sustainable and achievable for our whole family.' About Chip Ganassi Racing Chip Ganassi has been a fixture in the auto racing industry for more than 35 years and is considered one of the most successful and innovative owners in motorsports. Today, his teams include three Honda cars in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and two entries in INDY NXT by Firestone. Interview: How Oscar Piastri has been chasing qualifying upturn over F1 2025

Formula 1 championship leader Oscar Piastri targeted improved qualifying performances in the off-season prior to 2025, which he believes has translated into stronger overall races throughout the year. After two years spent largely in the shadow of McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, Piastri began his third season in much greater form and leads the Briton by nine points in the championship with 10 grands prix remaining. Speaking exclusively to Piastri delved into the areas in which he felt he'd improved the most. Although greater tyre management in races has been attributed to his forward momentum this season, Piastri contended that he had made the more significant gains in that area last season. Instead, he felt that he was making "a lot of races more difficult" by lacking the extra couple of tenths in qualifying - and his overall form has improved by getting the Saturday sessions right on a more regular basis. "I think [the improvement] has been a bit across the board," Piastri said. "I felt like from 2023 to 2024, I took a pretty big step in tyre management. "But ultimately there was still a few weekends where it wasn't really tyre management anymore, it was just pace that I needed. And when you are lacking pace, the easiest way to try and make that up is in the high-speed corners, which is the worst for the tyres. "So it looked a bit different last year, and on the weekends where I felt like I had just had good underlying pace, that wasn't a problem. Oscar Piastri, McLaren "But there still were those weekends every now and again where I needed to find a bit extra. I think just trying to find performance was the biggest thing in the off season before this year, and just trying to find that wherever we can in qualifying. "I was making a lot of races more difficult than I wanted to last year, so trying to improve that has naturally made a lot of races look quite different to what I had last year. "That was kind of a big focus point of 'how do I improve that result'. But obviously you can't just go into it saying, 'I'm going to qualify better this year'. You need to work out how. "That's been a big focus, but I think a lot of the gains I've tried to make in chasing that have also transferred to race day as well." Piastri explained the process of turning around his qualifying form, particularly given the tight margins currently observed on F1's grid in 2025; pole has often been decided by hundredths, rather than tenths, over the year. Although finding key strands in data and working around them was a key component behind this improvement, he said that finding those tiny fractions of a second needed to come from all areas – including mental and physical facets. "There was definitely a lot of focus on data points and how I can change my driving a little bit, what things I needed to work on," he explained. Oscar Piastri, McLaren "Were there specific types of corners? Were there specific tracks? All those kind of things. That was the main part of it because that's where the science is and that's where you can get behind it. "But also just trying to be better in every way: whether that's from a mental standpoint, physical standpoint, how I drive the car, how I get the most out of the team around me. "We're talking about such fine margins, especially this year - we've had so many qualifying sessions decided by less than a tenth that you really do need to try and get those hundredths from wherever you can. "I'm trying to find it from everywhere. But obviously there was a lot of work with my engineers and the team around me to try and work out how I can ultimately drive faster."
