Microplastics are more than a micro problem. And how to avoid microplastics might just be an even bigger one. It's been 21 years since a paper in the journal Science showed the environmental accumulation of tiny plastic fragments and fibers, naming the particles 'microplastics.' Since then, over 7,000 studies have shown that the problem is more widespread and advanced than we thought.
What Are Microplastics?
Microplastics have been found everywhere — from remote areas of the world to the insides of birds, fish, and mammals. They are also likely in your urine, blood, and organs. The tiny plastic particles, often less than five millimeters in size, come from a variety of sources:
Primary microplastics are intentionally manufactured, often found in products like cosmetics (e.g., exfoliating beads), industrial abrasives, and microfibers from synthetic clothing.
Secondary microplastics are created when larger plastics break down due to use, such as microscopic cuts in a plastic chopping board, fibers that get washed out of your clothes in the washing machine, sun exposure (such as leaving a plastic water bottle in a hot car), weathering, and other environmental factors, such as the degradation of plastic bags, bottles, and packaging over time.

Why are microplastics a problem?
What makes microplastics particularly concerning is their ability to circulate through the environment, entering our water systems, soils, and even human bodies. Microplastics can be found in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe.
The presence of microplastics and nanoplastics (formed when microplastics break down to 1 to 1,000 nanometers in size) in different organs and tissues in the human body could potentially lead to disease. However, the available data doesn't show whether this is extremely dangerous or nothing to worry about.
A study conducted in December 2024 analyzed various research papers and found 'low to very low' quality evidence of the effect of microplastics on human birth outcomes and gestational age. However, the same study concluded that there was 'suspected' harm to human reproductive, digestive, and respiratory health.
In a study on brain samples collected in 2024, scientists found a 50% increase in microplastics compared to a similar study on samples collected in 2016. Researchers found up to a spoonful of microplastics inside the brain, but they aren't yet sure about the consequences of this finding.
Unfortunately, that's not all. As carriers of other contaminants in the environment, such as forever chemicals in pesticides and packaging, microplastics have the potential to magnify toxicity. These chemicals hitch a ride on plastics found in packaging, nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, capsules from our medicines, and even medical devices.
In the coming years, we expect research to provide greater clarity about the potential effects on our bodies, such as:
inflammation
plaque formation in heart disease and stroke
oxidative stress (an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants that damages cells)
immune responses
genotoxicity: damage to the genetic information in a cell that causes mutations, which can lead to cancer.
What Can We Do?
While the scale of the microplastic problem may seem overwhelming, small, collective actions can create meaningful change. Here's what we can do to decrease microplastic pollution:
1. Choose Sustainable Alternatives
Opt for products that use natural, biodegradable materials wherever possible. Replace single-use plastics with sustainable alternatives like fabric shopping bags, metal straws, or bamboo utensils. Read the labels of cosmetics, cleaning products, and even scents and scented candles.
2. Wash Clothes More Efficiently
Minimize microfiber shedding from clothing by:
Washing synthetic garments in cold water.
Using a microfiber filter or a laundry bag like the Guppyfriend.
Opting for natural fabrics such as organic cotton or wool. Fabrics that make your clothes stretchy also shed microplastics.

3. Reduce Plastic Use
According to the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), scientists think that only 9% of the world's plastic is recycled, so reducing plastic waste should be the primary goal.

Support businesses and products that prioritize sustainability and advocate for government policies to reduce single-use plastics and improve waste management systems. Have a look around your house to find any culprits, and consider choices that might be better for your health in the long run. Rather than switching all at once, which can be financially and mentally overwhelming, think of small changes you can make the next time something needs replacing. Making the practice sustainable will make you more likely to stick to your goals.
5. Educate Yourself and Spread Awareness
Understanding the problem is only the first step. This global problem affects you and your loved ones, and sharing these facts about microplastics with family, friends, and colleagues can help create broader awareness. Ask your local state representatives to support the Global Plastics Treaty. Change happens when more people get involved.

Miramichi residents demand sidewalks for refurbished Centennial Bridge

Sadie Rose, an organizer of the demonstration, said residents don't accept the province's cost saving explanation. 'This is not over. Removing accessibility is not an option,' said Rose. (Nick Moore/CTV Atlantic) During question period in the legislature on Friday, Progressive Conservative Miramichi East MLA Michelle Conroy said removing sidewalks from the bridge's refurbishment plan would negatively impact the community. 'The people of Miramichi deserve the independence to safely walk across that bridge,' said Conroy. 'The lack of transportation is talked about in most of our departments, and all of our meetings, and instead of pushing to knock down those barriers, this government is knocking down people's independence.' In response, Transportation Minister Chuck Chiasson said finishing the bridge's refurbishment as soon as possible was the government's top priority. 'That bridge needs to be finished, we need to complete the project,' said Chiasson. 'That being said, I would be more than willing to engage the community on transportation solutions for the community.' Chiasson said the previous PC government did not budget for sidewalks in the bridge's refurbishment plan. Conroy disagreed, saying: 'It needs to be in there, and it was in there, and we were in the meetings to prove it.' Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon previously told CTV News there once was a plan for an extended suspension sidewalk off the bridge's side, at a cost of around $50 million. Survivor of institutional abuse Marie Slark led successful fight for compensation
Marie Slark was released from the Huronia Regional Centre in 1970 to live in a foster home managed by the institution. Nine years earlier, as a slight seven-year-old, she had been rejected by her dysfunctional parents and placed by Children's Aid in the sprawling complex built in Central Ontario to house children with intellectual disabilities. Life at the Huronia Centre was horrific, say survivors who recount endless days of neglect and abuse. Marie thought the foster home offered her a first chance to live in a place of love and care. Instead, she was beaten with a wire and forced to do all the household chores including caring for younger children. Her foster father abused her physically and sexually, Ms. Slark told a researcher at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2019. 'Because I didn't take care of the baby properly, he beat me until I was black and blue. I remember one time, they made me stay in the basement and wouldn't let me go to the bathroom. They were hoping I would wet my pants so I would find out what the baby felt.' Throughout her time in the foster home, Ms. Slark was in regular contact with Marilyn Dolmage, a Huronia Regional Centre employee who negotiated the placement and was acting as her social worker. But the lonely 16-year-old girl made no mention in those conversations of the abuses she was suffering. It was 30 years before Ms. Slark confided to Ms. Dolmage, who remained a lifelong friend, about the violence she experienced in foster care. She had kept it a secret because, no matter how bad life was with her foster family, it was better than living at the institution. Marie Slark died of cancer on May 21 at the age of 71. She and her former classmate Patricia Seth were the lead plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against the Ontario government, which ran the Huronia Centre for 133 years until it closed in 2009. That suit made clear the emotional, physical, and psychological trauma experienced by residents. It exposed the mistreatment and neglect of thousands of vulnerable children diagnosed with intellectual challenges, and set the template for lawsuits by survivors of other similar institutions across Canada. 'I can't stress enough how important Marie is as a figure within the disability community,' says Kate Rossiter, an associate professor at Wilfrid Laurier University who is the principal investigator on a project called Recounting Huronia which preserves the stories of survivors. 'The work that she and Pat did around the class-action lawsuit was heroic.' The $2-billion suit, in which Ms. Slark and Ms. Seth were supported by Ms. Dolmage and her husband, Jim Dolmage, was settled out of court in 2013 for $35-million, nearly $12-million of which went to lawyers and the provincial law society. Many survivors received just $2,000 in compensation for their years of suffering. But Ms. Slark's willingness to tell her story forced a national conversation about the dehumanizing practice of institutionalizing vulnerable disabled children. 'I call her a soldier,' says Barri Cohen, the writer, director, and producer of Unloved: Huronia's Forgotten Children, an emotionally devastating documentary about Ms. Cohen's search for her own brothers who were housed at the institution and died there. 'Marie was invincible in the way she powered through,' she says. 'She got up again. She was determined.' Ms. Dolmage says she never stopped apologizing to Ms. Slark for placing her in an abusive foster home. 'And she always said, 'but I didn't want you to know, because you would have sent me back [to the Huronia Centre].' For me, that was the impetus for the class action – to realize that being in those buildings was so much worse than being harmed in all those ways in the community was just appalling.' Marie Slark was born into a large Toronto family on Jan. 31, 1954. Her mother, Irene O'Reilly, had spent seven years of her own childhood in an orphanage. Marie's father, Douglas Slark, was an immigrant from Great Britain who was diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses. The family lived in a small apartment above a downtown store where the children were kept in darkened rooms. When found by aid workers, they were severely malnourished and at least one child had serious injuries. At the age of seven, Ms. Slark had never attended school and could not explain what India was when questioned by mental health experts. As a result, they deemed her intellectually disabled and sent her, along with a sister and a brother, to the Huronia Centre. After the class-action suit was settled, her school file was obtained by Dr. Rossiter's research team. It says: 'Because of the difficulties she represents, the parents are not wanting her home. One definitely would not consider sending Marie back to her mother who was very rejecting.' Ms. Dolmage says it was a common practice for Children's Aid workers to 'dump' children with diagnosed disabilities – both mental and physical – at institutions like the Huronia Centre. Girls like Marie Slark were not offered for adoption, they were simply locked away. 'When children, even very capable children like Marie, went [to Huronia], they were expected to die there,' Ms. Dolmage says. 'The staff took them for walks to the cemetery [on the centre grounds] and said: 'This is where you're going to end up.'' Children confined to the school were housed according to their age, sex, and intellectual capabilities. Those with more severe disabilities were placed in cages and ignored. Some of those who acted out were punished with ice baths. Others were held in straightjackets or forced to push cement blocks up and down hallways for days. When Ms. Slark was disobedient at the age of 11, she was put on strong antipsychotic medication that made her sleep all day. 'It was run like the military,' Ms. Seth says. 'We were hit with the fly swatter. We were hit with a baseball bat. Sometimes, we were dragged by the hair.' When Ms. Slark took more cookies than she was allowed, she was made to clean the floor with a toothbrush. 'When you dehumanize people, when you dehumanize children especially, all bets are off,' Ms. Cohen says. 'You think you can do anything to them because you don't believe they're fully human. … And, with poorly trained staff, it's a recipe for sadism, which is what we call it in the film.' Ms. Slark took some refuge in textile crafts and learned how to knit using straightened bobby pins. She once knitted a whole sweater, only to have a teacher force her to unravel it. The institution eventually put her to work sewing straightjackets to be used on other children. 'We grew up together in that awful place,' Ms. Seth says. 'I call it jail. Everybody else calls it a school. To me, it wasn't a school. Maybe I should say reform school, but I don't even know if it was that good.' Although the people who assessed Ms. Slark as a seven-year-old said they doubted she would ever lead an independent life, she completed her high-school equivalency at Georgian College, got her driver's licence, and worked at many jobs over her lifetime – in restaurants, in a bakery factory, in a factory that made cake tins, and at retail stores including Winners. She was always looking for people who she could call family, Ms. Dolmage says. Perhaps for that reason, Ms. Slark reconnected with her mother when she was an adult and nursed her through the final stages of cancer. After her mother died, Ms. Slark worked as a live-in domestic for a family in Vancouver and then Oregon without receiving a dollar in wages. 'I said to her so many times, 'you're being abused, get out of there. If you can get to Toronto, you can stay with us, and we'll help you get sorted out,'' Ms. Dolmage says. 'It finally got to the point where it was so bad, she agreed to that.' When Ms. Slark arrived back in Ontario, she reconnected with Ms. Seth. During a visit to the Dolmages' home, the two women opened up about the abuses they had endured at the institution. Ms. Dolmage knew of other survivors with similar stories, and that is how the class-action came about. Although there was not much in the way of compensation, the terms of the settlement allowed people to tour the nearly empty Huronia Centre and the grounds, where at least 1,379 former inmates are buried. It was on one of those tours that Ms. Cohen met Ms. Slark who agreed that Ms. Cohen could follow her around with a camera. The two became good friends. 'One of the lessons I've learned from Marie, apart from patience, is the value of not giving up and being determined. But she also taught me that we need to support and walk alongside our activists, because we may find them in the quietest of places,' Ms. Cohen says. 'She was a brilliant knitter. She was a textile artist, and I think that's what saved her. She was extremely inventive that way. Her apartment was filled with balls of beautiful wool. I think wool was her talisman of creativity and safety.' Ms. Slark and Ms. Seth also bonded with other survivors through the Remember Every Name project, which aims to honour all of those who are buried in the unmarked graves on the Huronia Centre grounds. And Ms. Slark connected with a woman named Antoinette Charlebois, a former resident who was several years older. The two called each other sisters and lived together until Ms. Charlebois died a couple years ago. The settlement denied Ms. Slark the chance to tell her story in court. But she took part in a speaking tour organized by Dr. Rossiter through which she enlightened audiences across the country about the suffering to which she and thousands of other children were subjected. 'Marie was brave in a way that always felt both tenacious and quite selfless,' Dr. Rossiter says. Binbrook Pride takes place today, after a year of feeling both love and wrath of social media
Social Sharing Social media has proven to be a double-edged sword for Binbrook Pride, which hosts its fifth annual pride celebration at the town's fairgrounds on Sunday. Through platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok, the 2SLGBTQ+ organization in Hamilton has been able to reach new people and evolve from a hangout outside Tim Hortons to a vibrant Binbrook community festival. Binbrook Pride has also used social media to find new sponsors quickly this year after some previous contributors pulled out, says Kasha Czech, a drag performer who heads up the organization. But social media has also led to online harassment for organizers and participants after a video of a performer at last year's event went viral, Czech added. Last time she looked, the video had 17 million views across all platforms. "It was a performer, a trans entertainer, who was revealing their scars from top surgery in the performance," said Czech. She said the content was shared on anti-trans social media accounts and on various platforms. The performer, 20-year-old Hamilton student Finnick Brisson, describes himself as a proud trans man, and said the performance, which happened two months after his top surgery, "went great." Then hateful posts and messages began flooding his social media accounts the next day, and a popular YouTube channel made a reaction video making fun of him, Brisson said. 'We deserve to feel safe' "There were a lot of anti-trans groups that started coming after me and slid into my DMs," Brisson told CBC Hamilton on Wednesday. "Police don't do much. It was very difficult. For something that should be and is super positive to be turned into something negative, it was very painful." The furor calmed down after a couple months, but led Brisson to face serious mental health challenges that required hospitalization, he said. It also led to some positive outcomes such as the numerous local and international artists that reached out to support him, such as Priyanka, a winner from Canada's Drag Race. "There's beauty being different and not fitting the binary," Brisson said. "To attack humans just trying to be themselves who are no threat to anyone is saddening. "We deserve to feel safe." He said he is speaking out now to show people he remains proud of who he is. Czech said the online mob also came after festival organizers, with people threatening to "dox" them. The term dox refers to the practice of searching and publishing private information, usually with malicious intent. "We had to shut down all of our social media temporarily while it blew over," she said. She adds that the furor has been reignited in a smaller way since they've been promoting this year's Pride online, but says organizers rely on the internet to advertise. The current political climate in the U.S., where politicians are openly targeting trans people, and people are protesting drag events, explains – but doesn't excuse – the behaviour BinBrook Pride is encountering, she said. "'Trans' is a buzzword or 'drag' is a buzzword people can use politically, even while not having a full understanding of what trans people are, or what drag queens do," she said. Hamilton Pride a new sponsor this year Czech believes the political climate has also affected the sponsorship side of Binbrook Pride, which saw two of its previous sponsors, totalling about a quarter of its funding, pull out this year. Czech points to the pullback on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives happening at many American companies across the continent. Fortunately, she said, a panicked call for new backing on social media led to several new vendors and a sponsorship agreement with Hamilton Pride, which is now a presenting sponsor alongside the Binbrook Agricultural Society. Sunday event runs 12 to 5 p.m. The family-friendly event takes place from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Binbrook Fairgrounds on Sunday, the day after Haldimand-Norfolk Pride kicks off Pride month in Port Dover. The Binbrook event is hosted by Karma Kameleon and Chimaera, and includes drag shows, musicians, information booths, vendors, a scavenger hunt and comedy. It also has a stage this year, said event co-chair Vanessa Medina, noting past years' performances happened on the grass. "It's so important to have people who live in or around our community showing up making themselves seen," she said. "Hopefully that reduces any stigma of what people perceive a queer community to be like."
