NBA clears Celtics' $6.1 billion sale to Bill Chisholm

August 14 - By Field Level Media A group headed by Bill Chisholm is set to take control of the Boston Celtics after the NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale on Wednesday. The NBA wrote in a statement, "The transaction is expected to close shortly." The reported $6.1 billion valuation for the club makes it the second-largest sale price for a U.S. sports franchise, behind the $10 billion valuation for the Los Angeles Lakers when Mark Walter purchased that team in June. Chisholm and his partners are buying at least 51 percent of the Celtics. The ownership stake will increase in 2028, according to the purchase contract, when Chisholm's group is scheduled to buy out the remaining minority shareholders at a $7.3 billion valuation. According to multiple media reports, Chisholm will take over as the Celtics' governor when the sale goes through. Outgoing owner Wyc Grousbeck is expected to serve as alternate governor and remain the CEO through 2028. Grousbeck will cede his role when he no longer has the required ownership stake of at least 15 percent. Chisholm, the co-founder and managing partner of the California-based private equity firm STG Partners, is a Massachusetts native and longtime Celtics fan. Grousbeck and the outgoing ownership group Boston Basketball Partners LLC purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002. During that group's tenure, the club won NBA titles in 2007-08 and 2023-24 -- the latter representing Boston's league-record 18th championship.

Costco shoppers rage over popular item they REFUSE to buy...'I hate it'

Costco members are still not over the retailer's poultry offering — chicken in plastic bags. The company switched from selling its ready-cooked chicken in plastic containers to plastic bags last year, which is continuing to anger shoppers. While inflation and tariffs have not forced the company to raise the $4.99 price tag, shoppers still say they 'hate the chicken in bags.' 'So many ways to improve this packaging and yet they don't. So hard to cut them apart and they always leak when defrosting in the fridge,' a Costco shopper wrote on Reddit. 'The packages of chicken parts are frustrating because they tend to be hard to separate without having leaks,' another person responded. 'The seam between portions are razor thin and the plastic bubble itself is very thin and prone to leaks from basic handling.' Some Americans have even opted to skip out on Costco's rotisserie chickens and purchase the meet from Aldi or Sam's Club instead. The fury over plastic packaging comes after some Costco members also accused the company of selling unappetizing chicken breasts. Besides bagged chicken, some Costco shoppers are infuriated with the quality and packaging for products like salad, tofu and peanut butter. 'I wish the peanut butter, almond butter, and MCT oil came in glass, not plastic,' a Reddit post creator admitted. 'I wish the tofu was high protein like Sprouts and Trader Joe's offers (almost twice the protein of the Costco stuff).' 'I wish the old muffins were still around. The current ones are bland and dry,' a customer claimed. 'The microwave popcorn bags are glued improperly and you can't open them without a knife,' another shopper claimed. Reddit users have slammed Costco's changes for months following its decision to swap Pepsi for Coca-Cola in food courts. Customers had been on the verge of boycotting since the chain swapped drink brands — which worsened after Costco started stocking Kirkland diapers made by First Quality. Customers branded the diapers as 'cheap' after longtime supplier Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Huggies, ended its partnership with the retailer last year to focus on its own premium products. Reddit users were enraged over the quality and packaging of items in several shopping categories Other issues food enthusiasts have found it hard to get over include the removal of cinnamon sugar churros from stores and the addition of frozen strawberry lemonade. Costco has been working to raise its customer satisfaction and member count, including by extending store hours for its Executive members. Executive tier members can now shop for an hour earlier than regular Gold Star members. The big box retailer will now allow its top tier members, who pay $130 a year, to shop from 9am to 10am on weekdays and Sundays, and 9am to 9:30am on Saturdays. These membership holders have praised the retailer for the policy change — but some employees have found it challenging to adjust to the new hours. Costco added pumps and expanded its gas station hours before implementing the exclusive perk. The hours are now 6:00 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays, 6:00 am to 8:30 pm on Saturdays and 6:00 am to 7:30 pm on Sundays. The chain is continuing to grow its nearly 1,000 location count — including opening a standalone gas station in California next year.

Oil regains ground from 2-month lows ahead of Trump-Putin meeting

TOKYO, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Oil prices edged higher on Thursday, regaining ground after a sell-off in the previous session, with the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin raising risk premiums in the market. Brent crude futures were up 28 cents, or 0.43%, at $65.91 a barrel at 0057 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 23 cents, or 0.37%, to $62.89. Both contracts hit their lowest in two months on Wednesday after bearish supply guidance from the U.S. government and the International Energy Agency (IEA). Trump on Wednesday threatened "severe consequences" if Putin does not agree to peace in Ukraine. Trump did not specify what the consequences could be, but he has warned of economic sanctions if the meeting in Alaska on Friday proves fruitless. "The uncertainty of U.S.-Russia peace talks continues to add a bullish risk premium given Russian oil buyers could face more economic pressure," Rystad Energy said in a client note. "How Ukraine-Russia crisis resolves and Russia flows change could bring some unexpected surprises." Another support for oil is that the expectation that the U.S. Federal Reserve will cut rates in September is at close to 100% after U.S. inflation increased at a moderate pace in July. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he thought an aggressive half-point cut was possible given recent weak employment numbers. The market is putting the odds of a quarter-percentage point cut at the Fed's September 16-17 meeting at 99.9%, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Lower borrowing rates would drive demand for oil. The dollar was hovering near multi-week lows against the euro and sterling on Thursday as traders ramped up bets for the Fed to resume cutting interest rates next month. Oil prices were kept in check as crude inventories in the United States unexpectedly rose by 3 million barrels in the week ended on August 8, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Wednesday, against expectations in a Reuters poll for a 275,000-barrel draw. Also, holding oil back was an International Energy Agency forecast that 2025 and 2026 world oil supply would rise more rapidly than expected, as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, together known as OPEC+, increase output and production from outside the group grows.
