Two villagers murdered by Maoists in Chhattisgarh
Maoists have killed two villagers in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Sunday (June 22, 2025).
The police in a statement said they have received information that two innocent villagers were brutally murdered by Maoists in Sendrabor and Aempur villages under Pamed police station area.
The police were verifying the information, the release said without specifying any reason behind the killings and when the crime took place.
The incident comes ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Chhattisgarh.
Mr. Shah will reach Raipur on Sunday afternoon for a two-day visit to the State.
On June 17, three villagers, including a 13-year-old boy, were strangled to death by Maoists using a rope in their native Peddakorma Bijapur village of Bijapur district.
Two of the three deceased were relatives of senior Maoist cadre Dinesh Modiyam, who surrendered before police in March this year, an official earlier said.

This, the Minister said, has restored faith in the objectivity and equal opportunity offered by the system and, thus, also led to democratisation of youth aspiration. 'This is the true essence of democracy -- where every mother, regardless of her socio-economic standing, has the confidence to believe that her child can reach the top," said Dr Jitendra Singh. The Minister said that the 11 years have been nothing short of transformational for India. 'What generations longed for over decades has been made possible in just over a decade,' he stated, adding that PM Modi has wiped the tears of the past and replaced them with eyes full of hope and future aspirations. Each passing year, the Minister said, has marked a new milestone -- be it in infrastructure, governance, technology, or youth empowerment -- creating unprecedented opportunities for every Indian. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr Jitendra Singh, stated that under PM Modi's leadership, citizens' self-esteem has been restored. Referring to the PM's historic 2016 call of "Start-Up India, Stand-Up India", he emphasised how it broadened the employment horizon beyond traditional government jobs. 'It was only then people realised that job doesn't only mean "Sarkari Naukri", but also innovation, enterprise, and startups,' the Minister noted. India's biotech sector, he highlighted, is a perfect example -- growing from just 50 start-ups in 2014 to over 10,075 in 2024, with a leap in valuation from $10 billion to nearly $170 billion. Maoists will not get respite even during monsoon: Home Minister Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reiterated the government's resolve to eradicate Maoism by March 31 next year and announced that the rebels will not get a breather even during monsoon. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and Central Forensic Science Laboratory's Raipur campus, HM Shah said, 'Unlike pervious years, when the anti-Maoist operations used to get slowed down during monsoon, I want to assure the people that we will not let the rebels sleep even during rains.' The Home Minister also hailed Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and his deputy Vijay Sharma for sharpening the operations against Maoism in the state. 'They have encouraged police forces, and I congratulate the two on behalf of the Central government,' he said. HM Shah also appealed to the Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream by availing the state government's rehabilitation package. 'I assure all those rebels who have surrendered that the Centre and State government will fulfil their commitment to them,' he said. Earlier, he called upon Chhattisgarh youth to become adventurous in setting up enterprises and start-ups for bringing about a new wave of investment in the state. He highlighted the launch of 'Mind-to-Market' i-Hub incubation set-up in the state, claiming that it would hold the hands of startup launchers and nurture youth to become MSME owners. Crediting the creation of Chhattisgarh to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, HM Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for shaping the modern-day state. Addressing the inauguration event, the Home Minister said that Sunday marked a significant day as three key projects impacting the criminal justice system of the state were being launched. 'The foundation stone of NFSU and CFSL is being laid, along with the launch of the transit campus of the University in which 180 students will start their education in courses like and in cyber and forensic science, among others,' he said. 'I want the youth to trust PM Modi and understand that their degree from NFSU will be a guarantee for their job,' he said. The NFSU campus is proposed to be built at a cost of Rs 145 crore by the Centre, while the CFSL will be built at a cost of Rs 123 crore. HM Shah said PM Modi's vision for Viksit Bharat 2047 cannot be achieved without timely delivery of justice and the three new criminal laws -- Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, effective July 1, 2024 -- are a step in that direction. The setting up of a forensic university and lab is a step in the direction of timely justice and establishing an evidence-based criminal justice system in which verdict is delivered within three years, he said.

Union Secretary reviews UMEED portal's implementation in Maharashtra
Ahead of the roll out of rules for the Waqf portal, Union Minority Affairs Secretary Chandra Shekhar Kumar held a review meeting with Maharashtra officials for smooth uploading of details related to properties on UMEED, an official said on Sunday. Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995 (UMEED) Central Portal, launched on June 6, needs the rules to support the statutory requirements. During the meeting on Saturday, the Secretary encouraged proactive participation and invited suggestions from state authorities to streamline the implementation process. As per the mandate of the UMEED Portal, details of all registered Waqf properties across India are to be mandatorily uploaded within six months. Those present in the meeting, chaired by the Union Secretary, included the state secretary, senior officials, and the CEO of the Maharashtra State Waqf Board. This was the Union Secretary's second such visit following a similar review in Bihar last week. Secretary Chandra Shekhar Kumar encouraged proactive participation and invited suggestions from state authorities to streamline the implementation process, said an official statement. The CEO of the Waqf Board requested the Centre to revisit and ease certain leasing provisions related to Waqf properties. The Union Secretary assured that the request will be examined sympathetically, reaffirming the Centre's commitment to empowering Waqf Boards and enhancing Waqf property management. Apart from reviewing UMEED implementation, the Secretary also assessed the status of projects under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) in Maharashtra. He directed the state officials to submit all pending proposals to the Ministry within one week for necessary action. Kumar also held a meeting with officials of the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) in Mumbai, congratulating them on the smooth and successful conduct of Haj 2025. He expressed satisfaction that this year recorded the lowest number of deaths and health-related incidents among Indian Haj pilgrims. He attributed this achievement to improved coordination between the Ministry, the Haj Committee of India, deputationists, Saudi Arabian authorities, and local support systems. The Secretary specially acknowledged the effectiveness of the Haj Suvidha App, which played a crucial role in enhancing the pilgrim experience and easing on-ground challenges. He said that insights from this year's Haj operations will be used to further improve arrangements for Haj 2026.
