Tennessee State athletic director Mikki Allen confirmed to The Tennessean on July 21 that the Tigers football team will play Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee State over the next four years.
The Tigers, under new coach Reggie Barlow who replaced Eddie George in March, will play at Georgia in 2026. The Tigers tentatively will play Tennessee at Neyland Stadium in 2027. Allen is pushing for that game to be played at the new Nissan Stadium. TSU will then play at Middle Tennessee State in 2028 and at Vanderbilt in 2029.
The specific dates for those games are being worked out. Allen said each game will be played early in the season.
Allen was excited to get Tennessee on TSU''s schedule. Allen played for the Vols and was part of the 1998 national championship team.
"We've been working on the Tennessee game for a while," Allen said. "It's going to be a special game. We're still working with their administration to figure out where to play. Because we're here by the state capital and would love to play that game in the inaugural year at the new Nissan Stadium."
The three SEC games will be a boost for TSU financially, coming with guaranteed money as well as national exposure.
"That's strong, that's really strong," Allen said. "I'm from Tennessee. That's my stomping grounds, so that was important to me. But you think about what we've got with this coaching staff with coach Barlow. We've got some Super Bowl champs and it just keeps going. So that gave us a lot of connections with some of these bigger program to work these games out."
Barlow said he welcomes the challenge that will come with playing FBS opponents. He said he tried to do the same thing during his time as the coach at Alabama State (2007-14).
"You're talking about SEC games, you're talking about great tradition programs like Georgia, like Tennessee and, of course, like Vanderbilt who's coming along and doing some wonderful things," Barlow said. "Just being able to go and play in those stadiums and get that experience for our young men here and our coaches is going to be exciting. Obviously, we know that it's a huge task and a huge challenge, but I just look forward to being in that atmosphere and that environment."
TSU has played Vanderbilt and MTSU in the past but never played Tennessee or Georgia.
TSU does not have an FBS opponent on the schedule this season. The last time the Tigers played an FBS team was in 2023 when they lost to Notre Dame 56-3 in the season opener.

Brady didn't understand football, says Rooney after 'work ethic' jibe

Wayne Rooney has described criticism of his work ethic by Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady as "unfair" and said the NFL legend did not understand football. Former Manchester United and England captain Rooney, was sacked as Birmingham manager in January 2024 after less than three months in charge. Seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was "a little worried about our head coach's work ethic" during a recently-aired documentary after visiting Blues' training ground two months later. "I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well," Rooney said on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show. "Football is not NFL -- NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that." Following Rooney's departure, Birmingham appointed Tony Mowbray and Gary Rowett as managers in the 2023/24 season but were relegated to League One. "When I went into Birmingham, they were in a mess really," added Rooney. "Hence the fact that the players weren't really the players who could take the club forward. Since then the project, headed by American-based hedge fund Knighthead Capital, has turned around. Birmingham's wealthy backers invested an unprecedented £30 million ($41 million) in transfers for a League One club last season and broke an English Football League record by amassing 111 points as they stormed to the title. "Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively," said Rooney. "He's one of the greatest, if not the greatest athletes of all time and Birmingham do look like they're getting it right now, which is good and I think what they have done is got the players out that they needed to get out." kca/pi

Kumbulla gives priority to Espanyol return

Marash Kumbulla's future is still up in the air. Having returned from his loan spell at Espanyol, the Albanian defender has never been a key part of Gian Piero Gasperini's plans. Furthermore, the imminent arrival of Jan Ziolkowski would further deprive him of his playing time. For this reason, Frederic Massara has been working for weeks to find him a new home. Several teams are interested in Kumbulla, especially Cagliari and other La Liga clubs. Espanyol would also be happy to bring him back to Spain, and it's the player's preferred destination. As reported by Sport, the 2000-born defender is prioritizing the club where he played last season.

Roma continue talks for Bailey, Echeverri and Fabio Silva

Roma remain very active on the market. Giallorossi sporting director Frederic Massara must seek to strengthen the attack as quickly as possible for an increasingly impatient Gasperini. The new name is that of Leon Bailey, who played a key role in Roma's defeat to Aston Villa in the recent friendly. The Jamaican winger is valued at around €30 million and can be adapted to the left. At the same time, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Massara has resumed contact with City for Echeverri. The Giallorossi are considering the possibility of bringing him on a dry loan. Finally, there's the possibility of Fabio Silva, who already has an agreement with Roma. The agreement between the Giallorossi and Wolves is still pending.
