US Reports Cases Of New COVID-19 Variant NB.1.8.1 Linked To Surge In China

Several cases of the new COVID-19 variant-- which has been linked to a large surge of viral infection in China-- have been detected at US airports, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Cases linked to the NB.1.8.1 variant of COVID-19 were detected through the CDC's airport screening program in foreign travellers arriving at airports in Washington state, California, the New York City area and Virginia, according to CBS News.
According to data available on the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), most of the cases are stemming from travellers from countries, including Japan, South Korea, France, China, and others. The testing was done between April 22 and May 12.
Moreover, cases of the NB.1.8.1 variant have also been reported in other US states, including Ohio, Rhode Island and Hawaii, the CBS report said. These cases are reportedly separate from the airport cases.
Health authorities in the US are now closely monitoring the variant, which is now dominant in China and is on the rise in parts of Asia, including Hong Kong, where Covid-19 cases have climbed to the worst levels seen in at least a year.
Early studies show that NB.1.8.1-- which is part of the JN.1 group of variants-- may spread more easily than other variants. However, it doesn't seem to cause severe illness, and many vaccines in the market already target it.
Cases Low In The US For Now
"CDC is aware of reported cases of COVID-19 NB.1.8.1 in China and is in regular contact with international partners," a spokesperson of the American health agency said in a statement.
However, in a separate statement to Fox News Digital, the CDC spokesperson said that there have been fewer than 20 sequences of NB.1.8.1 in the US baseline surveillance data to date, so it has not met the threshold for inclusion in the COVID Data Tracker dashboard.
"We monitor all SARS-CoV-2 sequences, and if it increases in proportion, it will appear on the Data Tracker dashboard," they said.
Meanwhile, authorities in the US are also monitoring a variant called XFC, which has been significantly growing in the country. Authorities have warned that the evolution of the virus has been unpredictable, even as the US has settled into a relatively predictable pattern of two surges a year-- once in the summer and once over the winter.
COVID-19 Deaths Are High
Per the CDC's data, coronavirus infection has killed an average of 350 Americans every week over the last month. The agency said that while the casualties are significant, infections are declining and are less than the peak of 25,974 deaths that took place in the week ending January 9, 2021, as well as weekly deaths that occurred in prior spring months.
The experts said that some of the high death rates in the US due to viral infection may be attributed to low vaccination uptake, waning immunity and not enough people accessing treatments.

So the Chief Minister implemented the health walk scheme in the State and it was inaugurated on November 4, 2023. Soon, the Chief Minister would inaugurate Nadappom Nalam Peruvom 2.0 in 38 districts. Explaining the health infrastructure provided to Namakkal district in the past four years, the Minister said projects worth ₹360.75 crore were implemented by the Health Department. Construction of 20 medical buildings worth ₹110.95 was going on, including construction of an intensive care unit with 50 beds at Paramathi Velur Government Hospital and the work would be completed soon. Of the 19 district government headquarters hospitals announced for the state, two hospitals were for Namakkal district. Soon, the Chief Minister would inaugurate the Nalam Kakkum Stalin Thittam under which medical camps would be conducted in 1,256 places, the Minister added. At Rasipuram, the Minister told reporter that, considering the Covid-19 spread, 95,000 beds were kept ready in hospitals. Facilities were available to store 3,000 metric tonnes of oxygen. Medical infrastructure was kept ready to face any situation in the State. People with fever, cold, or cough for days should approach the hospitals immediately. People with low immunity, aged people, and people suffering from hypertension and diabetes were advised to wear masks at large gatherings. Soon, the Chief Minister would hand over appointment orders for filling the vacancies in the department. The vacancies were filled in a transparent manner, the Minister added.

12 states, UTs undercounted Covid deaths in 2022: Report
New Delhi: India registered 8.6 million deaths in 2022, the least deadly year of the Covid-19 pandemic. This represents a 15% decline from 2021, the deadliest pandemic year, with the death rate likely returning to pre-pandemic levels. This suggests mortality was normalising as Covid-19 infections became less severe and vaccines were deployed. However, signs of health system stress persisted due to the virus. Excess deaths, or the surplus over the number of deaths that would have happened at the death rate seen in 2019, were higher than the Covid-19 tally issued by states in 2022. This suggests that states undercounted deaths related to Covid-19. Data suggests at least 12 states and union territories evidently did so. Moreover, the proportion of deaths without medical attention remained elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels. These findings come from two reports published on Thursday by the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI), under the ministry of home affairs: Vital Statistics of India Based on the Civil Registration System (CRS) 2022, and the report on the Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) 2022. CRS records all registered births and deaths in the country and is the most important source of statistics related to them. The MCCD captures a fraction of the CRS deaths where deaths are medically certified. The CRS report shows India registered 8.6 million deaths in 2022 compared to 10.2 million in 2021. The 2021 figure was a sharp increase from 7 million, 7.6 million, and 8.1 million deaths in 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively. To be sure, mortality rates are typically assessed after adjusting for population. For instance, the Sample Registration System (SRS) reports use sample surveys to estimate the crude death rate (CDR) per thousand population. CDR shot up to 7.5 in 2021 from 6.0 in 2020 and 6.2 in both 2018 and 2019. The lower CDR in 2020 was likely because accidental deaths decreased in the year, as HT explained on May 8. Since ORGI hasn't published the 2022 SRS report, no survey-based CDR estimate is available. However, using registered deaths and National Commission on Population projections, CDR in 2022 was 6.3—close to 2018-2019 levels. The SRS may arrive at a higher 2022 CDR estimate since not all deaths are registered in the CRS. Historically, SRS estimates exceeded CRS-based calculations by 1.0 and 0.5 per thousand population in 2018 and 2019, though this gap disappeared in 2020 and 2021. While the estimated death rate suggests the health system was normalising, other indicators show incomplete recovery. At the 2019 death rate of 6.2, deaths in 2022 would number 8,554,450. This is 95,480 deaths more than the 8,649,930 deaths registered in the 2022 CRS. Pandemic bulletins issued by states in the year only counted 50,435 deaths from Covid-19. At least 12 states and UTs undercounted Covid-19 deaths, according to the MCCD report. These jurisdictions reported 6,076 Covid-19 deaths in 2022, while the MCCD attributed 12,818 deaths directly to or related to Covid-19 in these jurisdictions. See Chart To be sure, the MCCD data doesn't show national-level undercounting for 2022. Nationally, only 25,393 deaths were attributed to Covid-19 in MCCD data, compared to 50,435 in pandemic bulletins. This likely reflects that MCCD captures just over 20% of registered deaths, with coverage varying by state. Despite this limitation, MCCD found 413,580 Covid-19 deaths nationally in 2021 compared to 332,510 in pandemic bulletins. The partial recovery in 2022 is also seen in another set of numbers from the CRS. Some 50.7% of registered deaths occurred without medical attention, compared to 47.3% in 2021, 45% in 2020, and 34.5% in 2019.

A 19-year-old girl in the US died on Sunday after taking part in a deadly social media trend called "dusting". According to The Independent, Renna O'Rourke from Arizona died after spending four days in the intensive care unit (ICU). Her parents said that she and her boyfriend ordered aerosol keyboard cleaner without their knowledge. After inhaling the keyboard cleaner, the teen went into cardiac arrest, spent a week unconscious in the ICU and then was declared brain dead. "She always said, 'I'm going to be famous, dad. Just you watch. I'm going to be famous,' and unfortunately, this is not under the most optimal of circumstances," the girls' father Aaron O'Rourke, said, per the outlet. "Dusting," also known as "chroming" or "huffing," is a viral trend that involves inhaling common household cleaners to get high for views online. The sensation reportedly causes brief euphoria but can cause instant, fatal damage, often due to heart failure, according to the Cleveland Clinic. According to a GoFundMe page, Renna was pronounced brain dead after purposely breathing in the cleaning spray. "There's no ID required. It's odourless. It's everything kids look for. They can afford it, they can get it, and it doesn't show in mom and dad's drug test," Renna's mother, Dana O'Rourke, said, per People. "She never regained consciousness," her mother added. Renna's parents described their late daughter as "vivacious and caring and loyal." Her father said that the 19-year-old loved to sing and lit up every room with her smile and laughter. Now, the O'Rourke family is working to honour Renna by spreading the word about the dangers of huffing for teens and parents. "Dig deep. Search their rooms. Don't trust - and that sounds horrible, but it could save their life," the mother said. They also started a GoFundMe page to cover the extensive medical bills, burial costs and therapy costs. Renna's father also plans to use the proceeds to spread awareness about the dangers of Huffing/Dusting, the practice of inhaling keyboard cleaner or similar. Notably, this trend has been around for years. In March 2024, an 11-year-old boy from the U.K. died after copying videos he had seen on social media of people sniffing or inhaling toxic substances. Figures cited by CNN also show an increase in the number of teens taking part in this deadly trend. From 2015 to 2022, the number of 12- to 17-year-old American adolescents using inhalants declined from 684,000 in 2015 to 554,000 in 2022, according to the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
