Big trouble for Sundar Pichai's Google and Steve Jobs Apple? this regulator to mandate changes for…, to protect consumers, businesses from…
Britain's antitrust regulator has proposed designating Google's and Apple's mobile ecosystems as having 'strategic market status,' a move that would require both tech giants to make changes aimed at boosting competition.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) made the announcement on Wednesday, following separate investigations launched earlier this year into Google's Android and Apple's iOS platforms. These probes were conducted under newly introduced digital market regulations intended to shield consumers and businesses from unfair practices by dominant tech firms. UK Regulator On Apple And Google
The watchdog said Apple and Google hold an 'effective duopoly,' with 90-100 per cent of mobile devices in Britain running on either mobile platform. Its investigation found a range of concerns affecting businesses and consumers such as unpredictable app reviews, inconsistent app store search rankings and commissions on in-app purchases of as much as 30 per cent.
The CMA also unveiled separate 'roadmaps' for each company outlining possible measures to improve competition, including 'fair and transparent' app reviews and app store rankings to give British app developers 'certainty.'
The watchdog also recommends letting app developers 'steer' users to channels outside of app stores where users can make purchases, mirroring similar efforts by the European Union. Google On Regulators Decision
Google called the watchdog's decision 'disappointing and unwarranted,' and said Android has saved app developers money because they didn't have to adapt to different operating models for each smartphone.
It's 'crucial that any new regulation is evidence-based, proportionate and does not become a roadblock to growth in the UK,' the company's senior director of competition, Oliver Bethell, said.
Apple said it was worried the CMA's moves could pose increase risks for users and jeopardize the UK's 'developer economy.'
'We're concerned the rules the UK is now considering would undermine the privacy and security protections that our users have come to expect, hamper our ability to innovate, and force us to give away our technology for free to foreign competitors,' Apple said in a statement. 'We will continue to engage with the regulator to make sure they fully understand these risks.'

Elon Musk's Grok AI has created a buzz on X, with several social media users bringing their old memories to live by converting pictures into videos. Amid a sea of AI-generated clips floating on the platform, a video reimagined by Grok Imagine using a photo from Musk's childhood, clicked some 50 years ago, emerged on social media. In the viral clip, Musk, as a toddler, can be seen in a blue 'Doge' T-shirt and eating ice cream. He strikes a contagious smile before taking a spoonful of the dessert in his mouth. Reacting to the video, Musk wrote, 'Grok turns an old picture of me from 50 years ago into a video.' While a section of users applauded the new feature of Grok Imagine, several slammed it for making 'fake memory'. 'But it's a fake memory. What does this do to our brains? @elonmusk ( I am not anti ai and I use it as a tool for output ) this input seems different and maybe weird or detrimental?' a user wrote. 'Incredible pattern recognition and enhancement is 100%. Your childhood vibe is so well recognised by Grok. In some cases where I tried it loses the track or pattern my face appears not me though,' another user commented. 'Super Cool Feature. Had My Wife In Tears Showing Her Some Old Photos That Instantly Come To Life,' a third user reacted. 'Unfortunately it doesn't always work so well. The quality of the likeness deteriorates when the animation starts,' a fourth user said. Recently, Musk's Grok AI offered its new Image feature for free to Android users as well. The feature was already available at no cost for iOS users. The tool allows users to create AI-photos and videos through prompts.

xAI cofounder Igor Babuschkin departs to launch AI safety investment firm
Igor Babuschkin , a cofounder of Elon Musk 's artificial intelligence startup xAI , said on Wednesday that he has left the company and plans to launch an investment firm focused on AI safety research. Musk launched xAI in 2023 to challenge Big Tech's AI push, accusing industry leaders of excessive censorship and lax safety standards. "Today was my last day at xAI," Babuschkin said in a post on X, adding that his new venture, Babuschkin Ventures, will back AI safety research and startups developing the technology. Babuschkin, who previously worked at Google 's DeepMind and OpenAI, described xAI's early scramble to build infrastructure and models, saying he created "many of the foundational tools" for launching and managing training jobs before later overseeing engineering across infrastructure, product and applied AI projects. His departure follows that of xAI's legal head, Robert Keele, earlier this month, and comes amid intensifying competition among AI players such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, which are pouring resources into training and deploying advanced systems. Last month, Musk-owned X's CEO Linda Yaccarino also resigned, just months after the platform was folded into xAI. Musk is separately contending with executive departures at Tesla.
