USWNT legend retires after awful knee injury
The two-time World Cup champion for the United States announced her retirement on Thursday, according to The Athletic's Meg Linehan.

Heath's last professional appearance resulted in a left knee injury that required multiple surgeries and has never fully healed.
'I had a personal journey back in January that I came to my own acceptance of not playing anymore,' Heath told The Athletic. 'It was me grieving not being able to play soccer anymore. For me, that was the greatest gift that had ever been given to me and such a core part of my identity and how I express myself and know myself to be.'
Heath won those World Cups in 2015 and 2019. She also won two Olympic gold medals, two NWSL championships with Portland and three NCAA championships at North Carolina.
She finished her USWNT career with 181 caps, and she scored 36 goals with 42 assists.

Heath was a one-of-a-kind winger among the greatest players in the world on those winning United States rosters. She took players on off the dribble like no one else in women's soccer.
She scored the final goal in the 2015 World Cup final against Japan, the exclamation point on the 5-2 victory.
Heath plans to embrace whatever life throws at her next.
'Right now,' Heath told The Athletic, 'I feel like I have an abundance of time and energy to really build lots of worlds.'

UNC football to face SEC program in CBS Sports' first 2025 bowl projections
Which SEC team is UNC projected to face in a bowl game? Can you believe the start of college football is almost here? We'll get underway with Week 0 next weekend, then UNC will host TCU to cap off Week 1 on Labor Day. Bowl games won't be played until December, but it's never too early to start making projections. Due to North Carolina's somewhat favorable schedule, North Carolina is slated to play in a bowl game. In CBS Sports' first bowl projections ahead of the 2025 CFB season, the Tar Heels are projected to face Florida in the Gator Bowl. This would essentially be a road game for UNC, as the Gator Bowl is always played in Jacksonville's Everbank Stadium, which is just 90 minutes from UF. North Carolina has six-consecutive bowl appearances, but a horrible track record in those postseason contests, last winning a bowl game in 2019 against Temple. Bill Belichick is a much-better head coach than Mack Brown, though, so the hope is he'll have his players prepared. Given their young roster, the Tar Heels also shouldn't have many opt-outs after their regular-season concludes. If UNC ends up playing in the Gator Bowl, it'd be UNC's second trip to the Sunshine State this season. North Carolina travels to UCF on September 20. Florida is in a similar spot to that of the Tar Heels. 2024 was the Gators' first winning season since 2020, which ended in the rankings and a Cotton Bowl loss. Last year, Florida went 8-5 and beat Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl, its first bowl victory since 2019. Messi available to return from injury for Inter Miami, Mascherano says
Lionel Messi is expected to be part of Inter Miami's matchday squad on Saturday, when the club hosts the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy at Chase Stadium. Head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters on Friday that Messi is cleared to rejoin the team after missing Miami's last two matches with a right leg injury. Advertisement 'Leo is fine. He's been training with the team since Wednesday,' Mascherano said. 'Barring anything strange today, he should make the squad for Saturday's match.' Messi injured his hamstring on August 2 in the first half of Miami's win over Necaxa in the Leagues Cup. He has since sat out of Miami's matches against Pumas, a 3-1 win for the MLS side, and a 4-1 defeat to Orlando City last Sunday in an MLS regular season game that humbled Mascherano's men. Without Messi, Miami was outplayed in Orlando. The attacking edge and competitiveness that Messi adds were glaring omissions on the day — something that Mascherano could not replace against their Florida rivals. 'This can't happen again,' the manager said after the loss. Miami currently sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with three games in hand following participation in the Club World Cup this summer. The chances are still there for Miami to make up ground and challenge for the conference's top seed and another Supporters' Shield. Still, managing Messi's fitness ahead of a busy final two weeks of August could determine how eager Mascherano is to go all-out in both the regular season and Leagues Cup. And after signing Messi's Argentina teammate Rodrigo De Paul this summer, Miami's MLS Cup aspirations were further underscored. Miami has reached the Leagues Cup quarterfinals, too, and awaits a date with tournament contender Tigres next Wednesday. After Miami's first win of the tournament over Atlas, Messi told Apple TV that Leagues Cup is a tournament 'that we want to win.' Orlando City, Seattle and the Galaxy joined Miami as the four MLS teams to advance from the group stage. The winner, runner up and third-place team all qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup. That competition is obviously important to Miami – it is MLS's potential gateway to the next Club World Cup – so one shouldn't expect Mascherano to take it lightly. It's also imperative for Messi, 38, to maintain his match fitness by playing in meaningful matches. Messi is currently tied with Nashville SC striker Sam Surridge for the top spot in the MLS Golden Boot race with 18 goals. Advertisement Messi was suspended by MLS for Miami's league match against FC Cincinnati on July 26 after opting out of the league's All-Star Game July 23. Upon his return against Atlas in Leagues Cup, Messi said that he needed to avoid missing games in order to compete at his highest level. Rest is one thing, but to lose his match fitness during an important stretch of games for Miami is clearly a concern for the Argentina captain. In September, the defending world champions will close out their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a home match in Buenos Aires against Venezuela, followed by an away test in Quito, Ecuador. Those two games are more than likely Messi's last qualifiers as Argentina's captain and World Cup hero. And even though Argentina has already qualified, it's conceivable that he'd like to be available to celebrate La Albiceleste's dominant campaign. The Argentina Football Federation will hope to feature Messi during the October and November FIFA international windows as well. This season was always going to be a heavier lift for Messi and Miami with the addition of the Club World Cup to an already congested schedule. Lessons will have certainly been learned after Miami ran out of gas in the first round of the MLS playoffs last season, crashing out against Atlanta United in one of the biggest playoff upsets in league history. Man United signs Rolfo after her 4-year stint at Barcelona
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Sweden forward Fridolina Rolfö joined Manchester United on Friday to end her four-year stint at Barcelona. The 31-year-old Rolfö signed a contract until June 2027. Rolfö, mostly used as a left-winger, made her 100th appearance for Sweden at the European Championship last month. She has 33 international goals. She previously played her club soccer for Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich and won two Champions League titles with Barcelona, scoring the clinching goal in one of the finals. United finished third in the Women's Super League last season and will play in the Champions League. 'The WSL is probably the strongest league in the world right now,' Rolfö said, 'so that was a big part of the appeal of coming here, as well as the chance to help the team establish itself in the Champions League.' ___ AP soccer:
