
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service told to improve in six areas
The regulator said it was "disappointing the service had "not made enough progress in other areas". However, Mr Allen said: "Cumbria has a fantastic fire and rescue service that will always be there when needed in an emergency."He said the areas needing improvement were not surprising as they had already been highlighted by the leadership team and "work had already started to move these concerns forward".
The service was found to be good at understanding the risk of fire and other emergencies and protecting the public through fire regulations.It also earned this rating for how it dealt with major and multi-agency incidents and making the service affordable now and in the future.Areas that need to be improved include preventing fires, making best use of resources, promoting the right values and culture and getting people with the right skills, ensuring fairness and promoting diversity. Lee Freeman, His Majesty's Inspector of Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS), said the service had "worked hard to consult the local community to build a comprehensive profile of risk".However, he said he was disappointed with its IT services and recruitment processes.
The report recommended the reduction of staff in temporary roles and that appropriate training was given.It also said the service "needs to do more to make sure its recruitment processes are accessible to applicants from a range of backgrounds and must improve its equality data".This was the first inspection the service has received since governance responsibility transferred to the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner from Cumbria County Council in 2023. Paul Hancock, Cumbria Chief Fire Officer, said: "We're proud of the areas rated as good which demonstrate the impact of our collective efforts. "At the same time, we fully accept the areas for improvement identified in the report and are committed to taking swift and meaningful action."

The world's largest EV market, China, is introducing a new battery safety standard in July 2026, requiring that batteries must not catch fire or explode, even in the event of a thermal runaway. Covestro's battery encapsulation foam aligns with this upcoming national standard, which is expected to influence policies in other countries. Still, this technology's abilities aren't limited to minimizing heat spreading from a battery cell to an adjacent cell. It also promotes higher cell packing density, helping optimize EV range. Baysafe BEF encapsulation foam series' low viscosity and tailored kinetics enable the filling of cell gaps without air inclusions, and foam processing is adjusted to cycle time during production. In other words, the battery pack becomes tighter and more solid, with more cells in the same space, thereby increasing range without enlarging the pack. Facts about EV battery fires Concerns about EV battery fires remain relatively common among consumers. One of the most common causes of EV battery fires is damage to the battery pack, which typically stems from a crash. A collision can cause ruptured battery cells to heat up increasingly through chemical reactions, resulting in a thermal runaway that leads to a fire spreading to the rest of the vehicle. Thermal runaway occurs when chemical reactions replace the normal electrochemical reactions of an abused battery cell. These new chemical reactions produce heat and toxic and flammable gases, which can affect adjacent cells. EVs have been confirmed as less likely to catch fire than their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts, but when they do, extinguishing the flames can take hours and tens of thousands of gallons of water. Since individual lithium-ion battery cells undergoing thermal runaway are contained within multiple layers of metal, typically aluminum casings, applying water directly onto the fire's seat can be nearly impossible, according to EV Fire Safe. Since these fires take longer to extinguish than those from gas-powered vehicles, they tend to receive more coverage, resulting in some consumers perceiving EVs as more hazardous. The truth about Britain's 'dark economy': Map reveals how nearly 1,000 businesses were fined £37MILLION for hiring illegal workers last year
Nearly a thousand businesses the length and breadth of Britain were fined more than £37million for employing illegal workers last year. Firms received penalties of up to £360,000 as part of the clampdown, which exposes the vast size of the UK's 'dark economy'. The ability to work without papers is considered a major pull factor for migrants overstaying visas or arriving illegally on small boats and lorries. MailOnline used Home Office data covering the whole of 2024 to name and shame businesses that have been caught out. They range from car washes, barbers, salons, hotels and takeaways to haulage firms, care providers and home renovation services. The biggest fine of £360,000 was given to D&T Hand Car Wash in Leatherhead, followed by £280,000 for a south London real estate company called Arya Rae Ltd and £270,000 for nursing agency Wrexham Care in Staffordshire. Also among the top ten were two more car washes, two construction companies, a haulage firm, one care provider and one restaurant - Portofino in New Brighton, Merseyside. Fines issued by Immigration Enforcement teams totalled £37,625,000, although it is unclear how much of this money has been paid. Businesses found to be employing people illegally face fines of up to £45,000 per worker for the first offence and up to £60,000 per worker for repeat offenders. While many are small firms, inspectors have netted some major names, including the famous Royal China restaurant on London's Baker Street. The well-known eatery has paid fines totalling £470,000 after three visits by immigration officers between 2018 and 2024. At least 20 people were arrested during the raids, which found one staff member who was receiving an hourly rate of £6 while carrying out 66-hour weeks. The council later stripped the venue of its licence to serve alcohol - labelling it 'the worst licensed premises in Westminster'. The latest raid by the Home Office's Central London ICE (Immigration Compliance and Enforcement) took place on May 10 2024, with nine members of staff detained - almost a third of those on duty at the time. The Royal China Group was fined £360,000 on that occasion, with six Indonesian and two Malaysian men deemed to have overstayed visas, and a Chinese woman working in breach of hers. During a raid in Oldham, immigration Enforcement officers found makeshift shipping containers that had been turned into a kitchen and living room In June, the Home Office revealed its officers had visited more than 9,000 businesses in the previous 12 months for checks on paperwork and working conditions. More than 6,400 people were arrested during the raids. The Home Office said there were a range of industries exploiting migrant workers with businesses often subjecting migrants to 'squalid conditions and illegal working hours' and below-minimum wages. In one case, migrants were found living in appalling conditions inside shipping containers at a car salvage yard in Oldham, where they were paid just £2.33 an hour. The illegal workers, from Malaysia, Lithuania and Belarus, were working between 50 and 60 gruelling hours a week. Officers found makeshift sleeping cabins, fitted with small beds and bathrooms, as well as shipping containers that had been turned into a kitchen and living room. Immigration officials said the migrants were promised accommodation and three meals a day - but once these costs were deducted it is suspected they only received £500 a month, or £2.33 per hour. Last year, MailOnline witnessed more than 30 officers raiding a bedding and mattress factory before making a dozen arrests. Specialist immigration enforcement teams in six vans surrounded the large warehouse near Tipton in the West Midlands before rushing in just after 10am. Several workers started running away after spotting the officers and tried to hide between timber pallets and piles of mattresses before they were handcuffed. The name of the business, Giomani Designs, was on a sign outside, and its products - which include leather beds and outdoor rattan furniture - were sold direct to consumers online. Officers interviewed all the men at the factory before arresting seven Indian men for suspected illegal working. Those found to be legally employed were allowed to return to their shift.

Everton sell their women's team to parent company to splash the cash and ease PSR headache - following Chelsea and Aston Villa in controversial move
Everton have sold their women's team to their parent company in a move which will allow them to splash the cash on new signings and stave off profitability concerns. Records on Companies House, first reported by The Times, show that Everton Football Club Women Ltd has been transferred to a company called Roundhouse Capital Holdings, which is controlled by Everton's owner, businessman Dan Friedkin. Roundhouse was the firm The Friedkin Group used to buy the club in December. Insiders have reportedly said the move will help to ensure the women's team is a standalone entity capable of attracting its own investment from the United States. They accept, however, that it will also help the Toffees comply with PSR. Everton have become the third Premier League side to make the most of a controversial law which allows clubs to sell assets, such as their women's team, to related entities and then record the profit in their PSR calculations. Chelsea and Aston Villa were the first to take advantage of this particular ruling. However, both these clubs subsequently breached UEFA's stricter financial rules, which seek to deter teams from shifting around assets in this manner. According to The Times, the Premier League have vehemently insisted the law is not a loophole because they conduct rigorous fair value assessments. Everton were previously deducted six points for breaching PSR in the 2021-22 campaign and two points for a breach in 2022-23. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire, via The Times, said Chelsea's eyebrow-raising sale of their women's team for £200m, ten times their annual revenue, means Everton could put a valuation of £60m on their own women's side. The Toffees lost 3-0 to Bournemouth in their opening Premier League Summer Series match, leaving David Moyes to rue a lack of signings this summer. He said: 'Yes, but let's be fair, it's not just players missing. We need to sign a lot of players and we're hugely aware that we need to bring a bunch of new players in. 'I wish we could have had them earlier because it would have helped us now and helped us prepare them for the team. 'We're fully aware that we've come here with a really limited squad and numbers and quite a few injuries as well.'
