Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba in question vs. FC Cincinnati

Inter Miami will host FC Cincinnati in a matchup of two of the top five teams in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
FC Cincinnati (15-6-3, 48 points) blanked Inter Miami 3-0 on July 16 and surged to the top spot in the conference following a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake last Saturday.
Inter Miami (12-4-5, 41 points) rebounded from its loss to Cincinnati with a 5-1 win over the New York Red Bulls last Saturday and sit in fifth place with three more matches to play than each of the East's top four teams.
FC Cincinnati held Lionel Messi without a goal in the previous matchup, snapping the superstar's league-record streak of five matches with a brace.
But Miami enters Saturday's clash with some uncertainty surrounding two of their biggest stars after Messi and Jordi Alba did not participate in Wednesday's All-Star Game.
MLS rules state that any All-Star player who does not participate in the game without either a reported injury or a league-granted exemption faces a one- match suspension. The league has yet to announce such a move.
"Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't," MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday. "So we have to manage that as a league. At the same time, we do have rules, and we have to manage through that as well."
Cincinnati superstar Evander, who scored two goals in the recent victory over Miami, served as team captain in the MLS All-Stars' 3-1 win over the Liga MX All-Stars.
Evander also set a record in the All-Star Game Skills challenge for points scored. He enters Saturday's game with the third-most goal contributions in the league (23).
"Just playing (and) just enjoying the moment," Evander said on the Apple TV broadcast. "I was kind of focused on the targets, and I did it."
Luca Orellano, who scored the lone goal in the win over Real Salt Lake, also continues to be a force in terms of creating scoring chances. For Cincinnati, Ahoueke Denkey (leg), Obinna Nwobodo (leg) and Yuya Kubo (ankle) remain out.
Miami is expected to again be without injured goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and likely will turn to Rocco Rios Novo in net again. Maxi Falcon also is out due to yellow card accumulation.

'Upset' Messi suspended over MLS All-Star no-show: league

LOS ANGELES, UNITED STATES: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami team-mate Jordi Alba have been suspended after the duo skipped Major League Soccer's All-Star Game earlier this week, the league said yesterday. MLS said in a statement Messi and Alba would be unavailable for today's clash against FC Cincinnati "due to their absence" at this week's All-Star showpiece. "Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match," the league said in a brief statement. Messi and Alba had both been selected to play for a combined MLS side in Wednesday's game against a team drawn from Mexico's Liga-MX as part of the league's All-Star break. However, both players withdrew from the showpiece early Wednesday for reasons that were not revealed. The 11th-hour snub left Messi and Alba both facing sanction. Under MLS rules, players selected for the All-Star game must participate unless they have a valid reason -- such as an injury -- not to do so. MLS commissioner Don Garber said yesterday the league had been left with no choice but to suspend players from duty this weekend, describing the ruling as a "very difficult decision". "I know Lionel Messi loves this league," Garber said. "I don't think there's a player -- or anyone -- who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. "Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision." Garber, however, said MLS would review its existing policy in future. "We're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward," he said. "I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve." Inter Miami's billionaire co-owner Jorge Mas blasted the decision to suspend Messi and Alba in a conference call with reporters later Friday, describing Messi as "very upset" by the league's ruling. "Leo Messi is very upset. I hope it doesn't have a long-term impact," said Mas, who is currently in talks with Messi about a possible extension to his current contract, which runs out at the end of this year. "Will it have an impact on (Messi's) perception of the league and it's rules? Without a doubt," Mas added. "Lionel is different from everyone else. He wants to participate in competitive matches." Speaking on Wednesday, Garber said the league should have known earlier about the no-show, but expressed some sympathy for the gruelling schedule faced by Messi in recent weeks. The 38-year-old Argentinian superstar has played nine games in 35 days and played 90 minutes in each game, including four games in the FIFA Club World Cup. "Miami has had a schedule that is unlike any other team," Garber said. "Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't. So we have to manage through that as a league." Messi and Alba's participation in the game had been under a cloud after Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated last weekend he would have preferred the duo to be excused from All-Star duties. "The players are called up. I'd prefer they rest, but it's not my decision," Mascherano said.

Soccer-Argentine De Paul joins Inter Miami from Atletico

(Reuters) -Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul has left Atletico Madrid and will join Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, the LaLiga club announced Friday. "Rodrigo de Paul bids farewell to Atletico Madrid and will continue his professional career at Inter Miami," the club said in a statement. De Paul will join his compatriot and friend Lionel Messi, with whom he has won two Copa America titles, a Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup. The 31-year-old made nearly 200 appearances in four seasons under fellow Argentine coach Diego Simeone but leaves the Spanish capital without silverware. De Paul made his debut for Argentine club Racing Club in 2012 and has also played for Valencia and Serie A side Udinese. (Reporting by Javier Leira, writing by Janina Nuno Rios)
