Ahmedabad plane crash: Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi holds meeting with police, forensic experts to assess progress of DNA testing
Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi on Saturday convened a meeting with top police officials and Forensic Science Laboratory officials to assess the progress of the DNA testing process being done on the bodies of those killed in the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on June 12.
Thirty-six state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) officials, along with National Forensic Science officials, are working hard to match the DNA of the deceased and family members to identify the dead bodies, he told reporters after the meeting.
Around 260 people, including 241 on board the flight, lost their lives after the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed into a hostel building shortly after its takeoff.
'Top officials of the Forensic Science Laboratory of different parts of Gujarat have assembled and are working hard continuously round the clock. The National Forensic Science Laboratory officials had also extended their help,' Sanghavi said.
He further added that once the FSL officials get the matching numbers, they are immediately sent to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to identify the bodies. 'The process of matching the numbers takes around 3 to 4 hours,' said the minister.
He, however, did not reveal the number of passengers' bodies identified.

Four arrested after Noida bizman's murder unveils currency scam
Noida: Four men have been arrested in Noida for their alleged involvement in a currency exchange scam that culminated in the murder of a 40-year-old businessman earlier this week. The suspects, part of a well-oiled ring, used a network of rented flats, staged foreign exchange deals, and violent tactics to trap and rob currency dealers. The suspects were identified as Ajay Kumar Sharma (48) and his son Mukul Sharma (25), both from Ghaziabad's Indirapuram, along with Akash Upadhyay (24) from Mahoba and Aryan Yadav (25) from Delhi. Police said Mukul and Akash were injured in a gunfight while attempting to flee a checkpoint near Noida's Sector 54. Officers recovered firearms, a stolen motorcycle and cash—both Indian and foreign—worth Rs 10.3 lakh from them. The case came to light after Ompal Bhati, a currency exchange operator from Sector 18, was shot dead in a rented flat in Sector 12. Bhati had reportedly gone there to exchange Rs 10 lakh in cash after being lured into a fake currency deal. Police said the group's modus operandi involved scouting for currency dealers, posing as genuine clients seeking to convert foreign currency, and renting properties briefly with token deposits to stage deals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Once the target arrived with cash, the accused would rob them at gunpoint and flee. Investigators revealed that Ajay Sharma masterminded the operations while his son Mukul, Akash, and Aryan surveyed and met with victims. In Bhati's case, the group had claimed they wanted to exchange Canadian dollars worth Rs 7 lakh. Akash even withdrew Rs 3 lakh to lend credibility to the fake deal. After Bhati arrived at the Sector 12 flat, the suspects attempted to rob him, but he resisted and was fatally shot. The group contacted Ajay post the murder, who advised them to take shelter at Aryan's house in Delhi. Police say they had defrauded another exchange operator of 8,000 dirhams just before their arrest. All four have been charged with murder, fraud, and possession of illegal firearms. Karnataka police look to put brakes on wheelie surge across state
Bengaluru: Karnataka is witnessing a sharp rise in dangerous bike stunts, particularly wheelies, posing a growing threat to public safety. Official data reveals a troubling surge in cases, with numbers more than doubling from 2023 to 2024 and projected to climb further in 2025. There have also been fatal accidents involving youngsters performing stunts. As per police statistics, the number of wheelie cases across the state rose from 341 in 2023 to 775 in 2024. The first four months of this year saw 321 cases, indicating that 2025 could end with over 900 cases overall. Wheelie cases from Bengaluru comprise 75% of the total cases in Karnataka. Of the 1,437 cases registered between 2023 and April 2025, as many as 1,057 were reported from Bengaluru. The IT city is followed by Mysuru, Tumakuru, and Ramanagara when it comes to wheelie cases. The high court had recently called for stronger laws to tackle wheeling, urging the state to introduce specific provisions to protect public safety and curb reckless behaviour of motorcyclists. ADGP (traffic and road safety ) R Hitendra said the authorities would adopt different strategies to catch individuals performing stunts. "We have to use local intelligence inputs to gather information on the areas, roads, and vicinities where such stunts are performed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Secondly, we'll use social media to identify them as there will be many videos and pictures of such dangerous adventuring," he said, adding, "We'll also book cases against garage owners and their workers who modify motorbikes for use in wheelie stunts. " When asked about forming new laws and regulations, Hitendra said, "Such decisions are made by the govt, and we're approaching the state govt on the same lines." Impact of social media According to a senior police officer, who worked as superintendent in different districts in Karnataka, the sudden spurt in wheelie cases is the result of social media influence. "Youngsters watch videos of wheeling and other stunts on social media. Such videos/pictures are shared instantly among the like-minded, and they get instigated and decide to perform such stunts. Also, a trend where individuals challenge each other to do such stunts is emerging," he said. What punishment? Adults caught performing wheelie stunts are booked for rash and negligent driving and later fined in court. Also, they must execute a bond, undertaking not to repeat such offences in future. If the offender is a minor, they will be booked under the Juvenile Justice Act. Separate cases will also be filed against the parent/guardian and the vehicle owner. They'll also be fined in court. Alwar: A 25-year-old woman died by suicide at her parents' house in Bharatpur district on Saturday after allegedly facing persistent harassment over religious conversion and dowry demands from her husband and in-laws. Approximately a month before her death, Manja had informed her father about pressure to convert to Christianity, with pastors allegedly visiting her in-laws' house. Following physical and mental abuse upon her refusal, she had returned to her parental home. In her final message, Manja specifically requested the return of the ₹10-12 lakh spent on her wedding and appealed for the harshest possible punishment for her alleged tormentors. She expressed concern about her uncle Tarachand, whose whereabouts remain unknown. On the morning of her death, Manja exhibited signs of distress and retreated to her room. Around 10am, her family discovered she had died by suicide, allegedly hanging herself with her scarf. Authorities confirmed that they recovered a video from her mobile phone, which has become a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
