SFA lifts suspension of NTU foodcourt nasi lemak stall found with severe cockroach infestation

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has lifted the suspension of the food business operations of Pioneer Nasi Lemak, Mixed Veg Rice, Noodle stall in Nanyang Technological University, said the agency on May 30.
The stall is located in Pioneer Hall Food Court at 162 Nanyang Crescent.
During an inspection of the premises on May 8, non-compliances such as severe infestation live cockroaches, dirty chillers and exhaust hood were found, leading to the suspension.
The food stall is allowed to resume operations as it has rectified the lapses that were identified.
Following the lifting of suspension, SFA will continue to place the food stall under close surveillance to ensure they adhere to food safety requirements
.
SFA said all food operators should ensure that their premises are clean and well-maintained, and staff are adequately trained on proper food safety management.
Members of the public who come across poor food safety practices in food establishments are advised not to patronise them and provide feedback via our online feedback form with details for our follow-up investigations.

Should Singapore be concerned about the bird flu outbreak in Brazil?

SINGAPORE - Following reports of a bird flu outbreak on a commercial farm in Brazil - the world's biggest chicken exporter - more countries have announced trade bans to prevent a spread across borders . On May 19, Japan became the latest country to say that it had suspended some imports of poultry from parts of Brazil, joining a growing list that includes Brazil's top chicken buyer China and the European Union. This occurred just days after the South American state on May 16 reported its first case of the highly contagious bird flu virus on a commercial farm. Singapore relies heavily on imported food, and Brazil is one of its top sources of chicken. The Straits Times takes a look at the possible impact of the outbreak on residents in Singapore. How dependent are we on Brazil for chicken? Nearly all of Singapore's food supply - more than 90 per cent - comes from other countries, with chicken being no exception. Brazil ranked as Singapore's top supplier of chicken from 2019 to 2021, accounting for nearly half of the Republic's chicken imports during these years, according to the Singapore Food Agency's annual (SFA) food statistics. In 2021, Brazil made up 48 per cent of chicken imports. Malaysia accounted for 34 per cent, followed by the United States at 8 per cent. The remaining 10 per cent of chicken imports came from nine other countries and regions. It remains unclear how much of Singapore's chicken today comes from Brazil, as since 2023, the SFA has not revealed the proportion of poultry supplied by other countries. How serious is the strain of bird flu in Brazil? The strain of bird flu in Brazil has been identified as a highly pathogenic avian influenza. This refers to a variant that is deadly to domestic poultry and can wipe out entire flocks in a few days , according to the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's website. Bird flu spreads mainly among birds, but it can also affect humans . Infection occurs through contact with the saliva, nasal secretions and faeces of infected birds, or surfaces that are contaminated with the virus. There is no vaccine for cases of bird flu in humans, but vaccines are available for birds. Brazil first confirmed outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian flu among wild birds in May 2023, but had not registered a case on a commercial farm until May 16 in the city of Montenegro in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul. Since the case was detected, local authorities and farmers have stepped up efforts to trace and eradicate the virus. As at May 17 , 450 tonnes of eggs from Rio Grande do Sul have been destroyed, and veterinary officials are isolating the area of the outbreak in Montenegro and scanning for more cases in an initial 10km radius. State officials on May 16 said the outbreak had already led to the deaths of 17,000 farm chickens, either from the disease or because of cautionary culling. How could the bird flu affect Singapore's chicken supply? The heavy reliance on food imports makes the small city state of Singapore vulnerable to global food supply disruptions from disease outbreak and policy decisions by foreign governments, SFA said in its latest food statistics report in May 2024. When outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza were detected previously, Singapore has typically responded with targeted poultry import restrictions. For instance , when cases of the virus were found in four prefectures in Japan in 2023, the Republic suspended the import of raw poultry and poultry products from these areas. SFA said then that poultry products that have been heat-treated to inactivate the highly pathogenic avian influenza according to the World Organisation for Animal Health's guidelines were exempted from the ban. Disruptions to the chicken supply can lead to higher prices. When Malaysia announced that it will stop exporting chickens in 2022 to ease a domestic supply shortage, the effects were keenly faced across the Causeway in Singapore. Chicken sellers faced higher supply costs, forcing some dependent on Malaysian livestock to halt operations because of the ban. As the first month of the ban ended, SFA approved Indonesia as a new source of frozen, chilled and processed chicken meat. In anticipation of supply disruptions, Singapore sources its food from countries across the globe, with a total of 30 countries allowed to export poultry to Singapore as at 2023. PHOTOS: SFA SINGAPORE – A batch of frozen ice tubes from South Korea has been recalled due to the potential presence of undeclared milk allergen, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). In a statement on May 16, SFA said that it initiated the recall of Bi nggrae Power Cap Watermelon Flavoured Ice Tube following a notification by the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries. The affected product comes in 130ml, with the best before date of Nov 6, 2026, and batch code 20241107 – 20261106 F1. The agency has directed the local importer, F&N Creameries, to recall the product. This is ongoing. While milk is generally safe for the broader population, it can cause adverse allergic reactions in individuals who are intolerant of, or allergic to, milk. Under Singapore's Food Regulations, all ingredients known to cause hypersensitivity must be clearly declared on food packaging labels to protect consumers with allergies. Consumers who are allergic to milk are advised not to consume the affected product. Those who have already done so and are experiencing health concerns should seek medical advice.
