International Media watchdogs urge immediate release of Ethiopia editor - Africa
International journalism watchdogs called on Wednesday for the "immediate release" of the founder of an independent Ethiopian outlet, after he was detained over the weekend.
The east African giant of some 130 million people is regularly criticised by human rights NGOs for the repression of dissenting voices and has seen a surge in the detention of journalists in recent months.
The country ranks 145th out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) 2025 press freedom index, which cites "widespread self-censorship".
Tesfalem Waldyes, founder of online publication Ethiopia Insider, was detained by plainclothes police on June 8 at a hotel in capital Addis Ababa on charges of "spreading false information", RSF said.
He was held for two days and despite a court ordering his release and bail of 15,000 birr ($109) having been posted, Tesfalem remains in detention.
RSF sub-Saharan director Sadibou Marong urged his "immediate release" and condemned his imprisonment.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Africa Program Coordinator Muthoki Mumo condemned Tesfalem's detention, and urged his release.
The CPJ said that the jailing "underscores the Ethiopian government's disregard for judicial processes and press freedom".
Ethiopia Insider's publisher also called for his release on Tuesday and defended "his strong commitment to professional and ethical journalism".
Tesfalem has faced prison before. He spent roughly 440 days on charges of terrorism and incitement to violence after being arrested in 2014, with the charges only dropped weeks before former US President Barack Obama's visit.
Arrests of reporters have increased recently, with three from the English-language daily Addis Standard detained in April. The previous month, seven journalists from a broadcaster were detained.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018 and was initially hailed for his openness but rights groups have increasingly criticised a crackdown on freedom of speech in the sprawling nation.

Xi Jinping and Congolese President Send Congratulatory Messages to FOCAC Ministerial Meeting

Xi Jinping recalled that in September last year, at the FOCAC Beijing Summit, he and African leaders unanimously agreed to jointly advance modernization that is just and equitable, open and win-win and eco-friendly, puts the people first, features diversity and inclusiveness, and is underpinned by peace and security, and to take ten partnership actions, steering China-Africa relations into a new stage of building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era. Thanks to the concerted efforts of both sides, the implementation of the outcomes of the Summit has already yielded a number of encouraging early harvests. The two sides have also reached a consensus on organizing the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges in 2026. Xi Jinping expressed the belief that this will inject new vitality into China-Africa friendly cooperation. Xi Jinping emphasized that the current international landscape is marked by intertwined changes and turbulence. China remains committed to creating new opportunities for the world through the new achievements in Chinese modernization, and providing new momentum for Africa and other Global South partners through China's big market. Through the entry into agreements on economic partnership for shared development, China implements zero-tariff measures of granting 53 African countries having diplomatic relations with China zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines, and facilitates greater access for exports from Africa's least developed countries to China. China is ready to work with the African side to further implement the ten partnership actions, strengthen cooperation in key areas such as green industries, e-commerce and payment, science and technology, and artificial intelligence, deepen cooperation in such fields as security, finance, and the rule of law, and jointly promote high-quality development of China-Africa cooperation. Xi Jinping pointed out that openness and cooperation are the right path forward, and mutual benefit is the shared aspiration of the people. Joint efforts by China and Africa to advance modernization will strongly promote solidarity and cooperation in the Global South and open up brighter prospects for the cause of peace and development around the world. He expressed hope that both sides will continue to advance the implementation of the outcomes of the Summit with solid efforts, carefully plan the future development of the FOCAC, and work hand in hand to build an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era, contributing the strength of China and Africa to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. In his congratulatory letter, President Denis Sassou Nguesso said that since the convening of the FOCAC Beijing Summit, Africa-China strategic and practical cooperation has yielded fruitful results. This Ministerial Meeting of Coordinators coincides with the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the FOCAC. He pledged to make all-out efforts and work unwaveringly with President Xi Jinping to make greater progress in building an Africa-China community with a shared future and to enhance the well-being of the people on both sides. Egypt Highlights Path to Sustainable Peace in Africa at Oslo Forum
Taarek Refaat Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Badr Abdel Ati participated on Wednesday in a high-level session on achieving peace in Africa, held as part of the annual Oslo Forum, a key platform for international dialogue on conflict mediation and peacebuilding. During the session, Abdel Ati underscored Egypt's central role in promoting security and stability across the African continent, reaffirming Cairo's long-standing commitment to supporting the African Union (AU) as the principal framework for advancing peace and development in African states. OPEN// PM chairs economic ministerial group meeting
CAIRO, June 11 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli chaired a meeting of the economic ministerial group on Wednesday to review several important economic files. The meeting was attended by Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Hassan Abdallah along with the ministers of planning, finance, investment, and supply. The meeting highlighted the progress of the economic reform program as regards the fifth review of the program carried out by the government and CBE in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to Cabinet Spokesman Mohamed el Homsani. The meeting also tackled the prominent measures implemented under the IMF Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) program, the spokesman added. He noted that the inflation rate in June stands within the target range set by the IMF's quantitative performance criteria, and is expected to decline in 2026. However, there are still some bullish risks due to the implications of protectionist trade policies at the global level, as well as escalating regional tensions and conflicts, the spokesman pointed out.
