The Mets hadn't announced the results of Francisco Alvarez's MRI exam as of Monday, a day after the catcher suffered an injury to his right thumb while diving into second base during Sunday's win over Seattle, but they know how much they can't afford to lose him for an extended period of time.
Unfortunately, they've had experience with that before, a history Carlos Mendoza noted Sunday night, when he acknowledged there was 'concern' over the thumb.
Alvarez had surgery on his left thumb last year after bracing himself when he fell on the bases and fractured his hamate bone on a swing this spring.
Both injuries have been a part of a downward trajectory in Alvarez's young career that resulted in him being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in June.
But after compiling an OPS of just .652 through 35 games before being sent to Syracuse, Alvarez returned with a flourish a month later.
Following Sunday's three-hit game, Alvarez had an OPS of 1.054 with 11 extra-base hits in 21 games since being recalled.
And he'd been even hotter of late, going 9-for-20 with six extra-base hits in his past five starts behind the plate.
'Whatever he did in the minors — or whatever they did with him — worked,' one National League scout said Monday. 'But something like this could throw him off for the rest of the year. We've seen it with him before. It can take him a while to get going again.'
Without Alvarez, the Mets would have to turn again to Luis Torrens, a capable backup, but of the 36 catchers with at least 220 plate appearances this season, just two have a lower OPS than Torrens' .581.
The Mets likely can't afford any more slips, given their place in the standings.
They entered Monday in second place in the NL East and third in the wild-card standings and begin a three-game series against the last-place Nationals in Washington on Tuesday, followed by three at fourth-place Atlanta.
Then they have to host the first-place Phillies and third-place Marlins before trips to front-running Detroit, as well as Cincinnati and Philadelphia.
Francisco Lindor was named NL Player of the Week on Monday.
The shortstop had gone hitless in five straight games, part of an 0-for-21 skid, before he snapped out of it Aug. 12 against the Braves.
And over his past five games, Lindor has done nothing but hit.
He's had five consecutive multi-hit games, going 13-for-21 with three doubles, three homers, seven RBIs, two walks and a pair of stolen bases.
The Mets lost three of those five games, but typically, Lindor's success at the plate mirrors that of the team.
CHECK OUT THE AND
In wins this season, he has an OPS of .991, compared to .535 in losses.
The Mets announced Monday they requested waivers to grant Paul Blackburn his unconditional release.
Blackburn had been designated for assignment to open a roster spot for Nolan McLean.
Acquired a year ago from the A's, Blackburn was sidelined by right knee inflammation and didn't make his season debut until June 2.
He had a 6.85 ERA in seven games, four starts.

1 Phillies' player who will make or break 2025 World Series chances

The post 1 Phillies' player who will make or break 2025 World Series chances appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Philadelphia Phillies are running away with the National League East as the New York Mets crumble. Philly has been great too, without the fanfare of the struggling Amazins, but has struggled in October. The Phillies have not won the World Series since 2008 and need shortstop Trea Turner to continue his bounce-back season to make it there this year. The Phillies lost in the NLDS to the Mets after running away with the division thanks to a 95-win season. In 2023, they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS after taking a 3-2 series lead. They took a 2-1 lead in the 2022 World Series before losing to the Houston Astros in six games. With an expensive and elite core on the field, they have not been able to bring a championship back to Philadelphia. Trea Turner is the key to getting over that hump. Turner joined the Phillies ahead of the 2023 season on an 11-year, $300 million contract. He racked up 100 RBI and an .809 OPS in his lone full season with the Los Angeles Dodgers to earn that deal. But he struggled to start the big contract, with a .235 batting average and .657 OPS through August 3. A famous standing ovation turned the season around, with his OPS ending at .778. Turner was an All-Star in 2024, but an injury capped his games at 121. In the Mets series, he had just three singles in four games, compared to five strikeouts. This year, Turner has been solid offensively and picked up his defensive struggles, from -2 outs above average in 2024 to 11 in 2025, according to Baseball Savant. With those improvements, the Phillies are in a much better position to win the World Series. They could make a lot of improvements, but the National League will be strong and difficult to work through. Can they make another October run? The Phillies need more than just Trea Turner to win the World Series Turner will be very important to the Phillies in October. They needed better defense at shortstop, needed another big bat at the top of the lineup, and needed Turner to make good on the investment. Those three things have happened this season, but Turner alone cannot beat the Mets, Dodgers, Brewers, or Cubs to win the pennant. The Phillies have two strong pitchers who will be difficult to beat for anyone at the beginning of the series. Zach Wheeler has been all around the NL Cy Young race in recent years, including this one. Cristopher Sanchez could steal it from Paul Skenes this year with an incredible 1.69 ERA since June 1. The Phillies have spent a lot of money on their roster in recent years and could be spending more in the offseason. Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto are both free agents at the end of the season. They are integral parts of the Phillies' core, especially Schwarber, who could reach 50 homers this season. They went all-in at the trade deadline and could be even more all-in this offseason. That puts a lot of pressure on the 2025 campaign. The Phillies invested a lot in Trea Turner, and he needs to be an elite playoff performer to make good on that investment. While that is a high bar, he has been an elite contact bat in recent years. That contract was for the immediate future, not for contention in the tenth season. When the postseason begins, the Phillies could land in the three-game Wild Card Series. While they have a great roster, those are difficult series to win and could end in a disappointing year. Trea Turner holds the keys to a deep Phillies playoff run and an upset win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in October. Toronto Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. injures hamstring vs. Pirates

Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tweaked his hamstring while making a stellar defensive play during a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Guerrero was hurt in the third inning of the 5-2 setback Monday in Pittsburgh. He left the game in the fifth inning because of what the team called "left hamstring tightness." "He's doing all right," manager John Schneider told reporters. "It was after that stretch, obviously. At this time of year, everyone is kind of grinding a little bit, and I think that just irritated his hammy. It's just tightness." Schneider said Guerrero would have an MRI on Monday night and be evaluated Tuesday. "He wanted to test it out a little bit and wanted to be sure that he wasn't going to really aggravate it," Schneider said. "I trust him, and he knows himself really well. "We can't afford to lose him for an extended period of time, so it was partially precautionary, too. Hopefully, he's good to go in the next day or two. He's obviously really important to our lineup." Center fielder Alexander Canario gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. Guerrero plated the Blue Jays' first run with an RBI ground out in the top of the third. Shortstop Bo Bichette brought in right fielder Addison Barger with an RBI single in the next at-bat. The Pirates tied the score on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning. Second baseman Nick Gonzales then grounded into a double play. Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman then walked designed hitter Andrew McCutchen, bringing Jared Triolo to the plate. The Pirates shortstop hit a ground ball to Bichette. The Blue Jays shortstop then tossed to first base. Guerrero kept his right foot on the base while doing a full split toward the throw. He gloved the catch to retire Triolo and end the inning. Guerrero, who jogged to the dugout, returned to the field in the bottom of the fourth, when he made two outs at first base. Pinch-hitter Ty France replaced Guerrero in the top of the fifth. France shifted to first base in the bottom of the inning. Guerrero went 0 for 2 with an RBI and a strikeout. France went 0 for 2 with a strikeout. No Blue Jays hitter recorded more multiple hits against the Pirates. Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Starting pitcher Paul Skenes allowed five hits and two runs over six innings, but was not on record for a decision. He also recorded eight strikeouts. Gausman allowed five hits and two runs over five innings. Guerrero hit .298 with 21 home runs and 69 RBIs over his first 124 games this season. The Blue Jays (73-53), who lost their last two games, still lead the American League East. The second-place New York Yankees (67-57) and Boston Red Sox (68-58) are five games behind the division leaders. The Pirates (53-73) will host the Blue Jays in the second game of the series at 6:40 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
