Three awarded life sentence in double murder case in Mayiladuthurai
In a case of double murder for gain, the Mayiladuthurai District Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced two men to multiple life terms for their involvement in the brutal killing of a woman and her young son during a robbery in Sirkazhi in 2021.
The case dates back to January 27, 2021, when Dhanraj Choudhary, a jewellery pawn broker from Rajasthan residing with his family in Sirkazhi's Thadalankarai South Street, became the victim of a premeditated robbery plotted by his close friend Karunaram from Kumbakonam. Karunaram, along with three accomplices from Rajasthan, P. Manish, J. Ramesh Patel, and S. Mahipal, conspired to loot Dhanraj's home.
On the day of the incident, the gang forcibly entered Dhanraj's residence early morning with deadly weapons, fatally assaulted his wife Asha and son Akhil, and fled with approximately 1.2 kg of gold and ₹6.75 lakh in cash, the total value estimated at ₹4.62 crore.
Following a detailed investigation led by then Sirkazhi Inspector Manimaran, the accused were traced to Erukkur in Anaikkaran Chatiram police jurisdiction and arrested. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the conspiracy and killings. Notably, during a police-led recovery operation in Rajasthan, Mahipal attempted to attack officers with a hidden weapon. In self-defence, Inspector Selvam from Poraiyar police station shot Mahipal, resulting in his death.
Subsequently, the remaining three accused, including Karunaram, were remanded and charged under multiple sections, including murder for gain, criminal conspiracy, and the Arms Act.
After prolonged proceedings, Sessions Judge R. Vijayakumari found Manish and Karunaram guilty. Manish was sentenced to three life terms for his role in the murders and the robbery. Karunaram received double life imprisonment for conspiracy and involvement in the killings. The accused were later transferred to Cuddalore Central Prison.

Bengal: SIT files chargesheet against 13 in Murshidabad father-son murder case
Kolkata: The West Bengal Police's special investigation team (SIT) has reportedly named over 50 witnesses in its chargesheet against 13 people in connection with the April 12 murder of a 72-year-old man and his 40-year-old son at Jafrabad village in Murshidabad, police officers aware of the development said on Saturday. 'We have framed charges against 13 persons under various sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), including 103(2) (murder committed by more than five persons particularly on grounds of caste and religion), 191(2) (rioting), and 310(2) (dacoity), along with some sections of the Arms Act,' a senior officer said, adding the police have over 50 witnesses, CCTV footages and telephone call details. Another senior police officer said that 11 of the 13 people named in the over 980-page chargesheet have already been arrested. Communal clashes had erupted following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in some areas of Murshidabad district on April 11 and 12, leaving three persons dead. Houses and shops were looted and set on fire. Around 170 villagers had left their houses, and people took refuge in a relief camp in Malda across the Bhagirathi River. Three persons were killed, including 72-year-old Haragobindo Das and his son Chandan Das, who were hacked to death by a mob in Jafrabad. The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces. More than 300 people were arrested in connection with over 60 first information reports (FIRs) at various police stations in Murshidabad. Union home minister Amit Shah, during his recent visit to the state, called the Murshidabad riots 'state-sponsored.' Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, during her visit to the district in May, had alleged that the clashes were egged on by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and that situations wouldn't have flared up on the second day had the border security force (BSF) not opened fire.

Tinder account under scanner: Punjab police probe dating app profile suspected to be linked to Amritpal Singh
Punjab Police have reached out to dating app Tinder for information on an account suspected to be connected to Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP, currently booked for the murder of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau. The police have asked Tinder to provide user data including the account holder's name, date of birth, phone number, IP logs (since January 1, 2019), location data, email addresses, chat records, contacts, photographs, and media files associated with the account. According to the Faridkot police, Gurpreet Singh—a member of Amritpal's 'Waris Punjab De' outfit and vocal critic of Amritpal Singh—was shot dead on October 9, 2024, while returning home from a village Gurdwara, reported PTI. The case is being probed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav had earlier alleged that the murder was carried out at Amritpal's behest. Authorities also claim gangster-turned-terrorist Arshdeep Singh alias Arsh Dalla masterminded the killing, as per PTI. Two shooters have already been arrested in connection with the crime. In a letter dated May 26, accessed by PTI, Punjab Police formally requested Tinder's assistance, stating: 'On October 9, 2024, Gurpreet Singh, an online activist who managed the Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks' and was outspoken against Amritpal Singh, was murdered by two motorcycle-borne assailants. During the investigation, a Tinder profile under the name 'Amrit Sandhu' was discovered and is suspected to be linked to the primary accused, Amritpal Singh.' Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), rose to prominence for reviving pro-Khalistan rhetoric and modelling himself after slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Singh and nine aides were detained under the NSA in 2023. (with inputs from agencies)

NIA Chargesheets Khalistani Terrorist & Gangster Goldy Brar Over Gurugram Bomb Attacks
Last Updated: The attacks occurred on December 10, 2024, when two crude bombs were thrown outside the Warehouse Club and the Human Club in Gurugram's bustling Sector 29 The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a comprehensive chargesheet on Saturday against five individuals, including the notorious designated terrorist Satinderjit Singh, also known as Goldy Brar, in connection with the twin bomb attacks on two prominent clubs in Gurugram, Haryana, in December 2024. The chargesheet, submitted before a special NIA court, identifies Canada-based Goldy Brar and US-based Randeep Singh, also known as Randeep Malik, as the primary conspirators. Both Brar and Malik are currently at large and have been declared absconders. The other three individuals named in the chargesheet—Sachin Taliyan, Ankit, and Bhawish—are currently in custody. The attacks occurred on December 10, 2024, when two crude bombs were thrown outside the Warehouse Club and the Human Club in Gurugram's bustling Sector 29. Although no fatalities occurred, the incident caused panic and minor damage, prompting immediate investigations. The NIA's findings reveal that these bombings were part of a deep-rooted terror conspiracy orchestrated by the banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Goldy Brar, a key figure in the Khalistani terror network, along with his associates, allegedly masterminded these attacks. According to the NIA, the primary aim was to incite communal tensions and destabilise peace in Haryana and its neighbouring regions by unleashing violence. The investigation also uncovered that this terror syndicate is engaged in various illegal activities, including extortion, raising terror funds, and procuring explosives, arms, and ammunition. These activities are aimed at promoting terror among the public and undermining India's integrity, security (including economic security), and sovereignty, the agency says. The accused face charges under several stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The NIA has indicated that further investigations into the broader terror conspiracy, which extends beyond these specific bombings, are ongoing. First Published:
