Bengal: SIT files chargesheet against 13 in Murshidabad father-son murder case
Kolkata: The West Bengal Police's special investigation team (SIT) has reportedly named over 50 witnesses in its chargesheet against 13 people in connection with the April 12 murder of a 72-year-old man and his 40-year-old son at Jafrabad village in Murshidabad, police officers aware of the development said on Saturday.
'We have framed charges against 13 persons under various sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), including 103(2) (murder committed by more than five persons particularly on grounds of caste and religion), 191(2) (rioting), and 310(2) (dacoity), along with some sections of the Arms Act,' a senior officer said, adding the police have over 50 witnesses, CCTV footages and telephone call details.
Another senior police officer said that 11 of the 13 people named in the over 980-page chargesheet have already been arrested.
Communal clashes had erupted following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in some areas of Murshidabad district on April 11 and 12, leaving three persons dead. Houses and shops were looted and set on fire. Around 170 villagers had left their houses, and people took refuge in a relief camp in Malda across the Bhagirathi River.
Three persons were killed, including 72-year-old Haragobindo Das and his son Chandan Das, who were hacked to death by a mob in Jafrabad. The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces. More than 300 people were arrested in connection with over 60 first information reports (FIRs) at various police stations in Murshidabad.
Union home minister Amit Shah, during his recent visit to the state, called the Murshidabad riots 'state-sponsored.' Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, during her visit to the district in May, had alleged that the clashes were egged on by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and that situations wouldn't have flared up on the second day had the border security force (BSF) not opened fire.

PSP Suresh Kumar, standing counsel for the CBI, highlighted the sensitive nature of the crime, given its connection to a religious allege that Bholebaba Dairy, which did not have a formal contract with TTD, used AR Dairy as a front to secure the lucrative ghee supply agreement. While the documentation was in AR Dairy's name, the actual product was reportedly delivered by Bholebaba. Tests later revealed that the so-called ghee was not dairy-based at all, but a harmful concoction of palm oil and dairies- Bholebaba, Vaishnavi, and AR Dairy - are alleged to have jointly run the racket, conducting business worth hundreds of crores. In addition to financial fraud, the CBI has also accused the accused parties of attempting to tamper with the of the co-accused, Asish Rohilla, who had reportedly agreed to testify as a witness, was allegedly relocated under duress to Chennai and later to Delhi in an effort to silence him. The CBI argued that the accused have access to immense financial resources and could influence or threaten other witnesses if granted religious sentiment and public trust hanging in the balance, the agency has urged the court to handle the matter with the highest level of seriousness. The SIT is now focused on widening the scope of the probe to include all those who held positions of authority during the time of the alleged marks the first time that notices will be served to former TTD chairpersons in connection with the case, indicating that the investigation is now moving beyond suppliers and into the administrative chain that governed TTD during the YSRCP regime.

Student's death: Murder case filed against med college principal, others
Kota: City police have registered a murder case against the principal of Kota Govt Medical College, a hostel warden and two MBBS students following directions from the State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST Commission). The case relates to the death of Sunil Bairwa, a 28-year-old third-year MBBS student, who was found hanging in the college's hostel room in March this year. T he accused include Dr Sangeeta Saxena, the college principal, an unidentified hostel warden, and two MBBS students - Adarsh Fojdar and Sandeep. The case has been registered under different sections of BNS and the SC/ST Act at the Mahaveer Nagar police station. The development comes after the deceased student's father filed a plea with both state and national SC/ST commissions, alleging his son was murdered. According to the father's complaint, the college administration denied his son permission to appear for examinations and was allegedly harassed by the warden and two fellow students. Initially, police treated the case as a suicide and registered it under section 194 of BNSS. However, following the commission's intervention, the investigation has now been elevated to a murder case and transferred to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the area. Circle Inspector Ramesh Kavia of Mahaveer Nagar police station confirmed that while preliminary evidence suggested suicide, a fresh investigation would be conducted under the new charges.

Odisha: Four arrested for rape of two minors
Police arrested four persons for allegedly raping two minor cousins after luring them from a marriage function, in Odisha on Saturday. The accused abducted the minors on June 3 from the function and held them captive till June 4, after which they abandoned the victims in a secluded area. Police said that the victims returned on their own on June 5, following which their family members lodged a complaint. A case was registered under BNS Section 70 (gang rape) and Section 11 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, that deals with sexual harassment. Following this, a manhunt was launched to arrest the accused. Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said that the four accused — all belonging to one village — were arrested when they were trying to leave the state. 'One of the victims was in touch with an accused through her mother's mobile phone. He lured the victims to an isolated place and gangraped them along with his three friends for two days,' said the SP. The police have recorded the statements of the victims and sent them to the child welfare committee for the necessary counselling. 'We will thoroughly investigate the case. We will request the court to expedite the trial and ensure maximum punishment to the accused,' the SP said.
