Sultan of Selangor officiates opening of Marine Dept's Light Dues Tower

The Star3 days ago
PORT KLANG: Selangor's Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has officiated the Marine Department's Light Dues Tower at its headquarters here.
The ruler arrived at about 11am on Thursday (Aug 14) and was welcomed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Marine Department director-general Datuk Dickson Dollah.
Loke, in his opening speech, said the 12-storey building, which houses a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) command centre to monitor Straits of Malacca waters, not only meets the standards of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) but also plays an active role in shaping those standards at the global level.
"In the context of maritime safety, the role of the VTS command centre operated by the Marine Department in this tower is critical and must not be taken lightly.
"This VTS centre monitors the movement of thousands of vessels in real-time, daily. It provides navigational information and issues early warnings of potential hazards," he said.
Loke pointed out that the Straits of Malacca is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with an average of 200 ships daily, including giant oil tankers, container cargo vessels and various other merchant ships carrying about one-fifth of global trade.
Therefore, the presence and efficiency of the VTS command centre serve as a key defence in preventing vessel collisions, managing maritime emergencies such as oil spills or stranded ships, and ensuring the smooth and safe flow of maritime trade.
"Without an efficient and modern VTS system, the risk of maritime accidents will significantly increase, which could potentially harm the national economy, pollute the environment and endanger lives," he said.
Construction of the MDA Dues Tower began on Dec 1, 2017, fully financed by the Federation Light Dues Fund (under the Federation Light Dues Act 1953), totalling RM93.68mil. The project was completed in 2021 and commenced operations in 2024.
The design of the building was based on a cruise ship concept to reflect the Marine Department's identity as the leading authority in the country's maritime sector. – Bernama

Loke: Jalur Gemilang a symbol of unity

Proud Malaysians: Loke (centre) posing for a photo after handing over the Jalur Gemilang to 100 representatives of haulier drivers at the Jalur Gemilang raising programme in Port Klang. — Bernama PORT KLANG: The Jalur Gemilang serves as a symbol of unity for all Malaysians, a fact that must not be overlooked despite recent controversies, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Speaking during the 'Kibarkan Jalur Gemilang Komuniti Pelabuhan Klang' programme, Loke reminded Malaysians that the national flag transcends race, religion and politics. 'Although there have been several recent incidents involving the Jalur Gemilang, we must not forget that it is our common flag. 'National Day should unite Malaysians and remind us that love for the country must be part of our character and daily lives,' he said at the event held at the Port Klang Authority Social and Recreational Club yesterday. His remarks followed two incidents in which the national flag was displayed upside down – initially at a primary school in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, and subsequently at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang. On another matter, Loke stressed the importance of the logistics sector as the backbone of Malaysia's economy. 'Without logistics, trade cannot take place, and the economy would be crippled,' he said. Loke said it is the mission of the industry to ensure that Port Klang, already ranked among the world's 10 busiest ports, continues to grow and drive national prosperity. He added that development plans for Carey Island, designated as the country's third port, are underway and are expected to bring additional benefits to the Port Klang community. At the event, Loke also presented the Jalur Gemilang to representatives of logistics and transportation companies in conjunction with the upcoming National Day celebrations.

Ipoh Sentral recreational park prioritised before commercial projects

IPOH: The developer of Ipoh Sentral has been instructed to prioritise completing a recreational park before commencing commercial projects. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook emphasised this as part of the project's first phase, expected within a year. He stated the condition aligns with Malaysia MADANI's goal of ensuring public benefits precede private profits. 'We want developers to prioritise the public first, which is our condition,' Loke said during the groundbreaking ceremony. He stressed the park must open within six to 12 months for locals to enjoy before profit-driven developments proceed. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the event alongside Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The project integrates rail, bus, and cycling lanes under the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept. Loke highlighted TOD's role in sustainable urban growth under the 13th Malaysia Plan. The government aims to launch 30 TODs in five years, with Ipoh Sentral being the first. Spanning 27 hectares, the RM6.2 billion project will feature a modern transport hub. Phase 1 includes a 6.31-acre green space, while Phase 2 involves mixed development over 20 years. Loke reiterated the importance of public-centric development for Perak's community. The event was attended by MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. - Bernama

Ipoh Sentral: City's new transport future

IPOH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the groundbreaking of the Ipoh Sentral project, a landmark transit-oriented development (TOD) set to transform the city into a modern, sustainable hub with enhanced connectivity. With an estimated gross development value (GDV) of RM6.25 billion, Ipoh Sentral combines elements of transportation, urban planning and sustainability in a single innovative initiative that promises to reshape city living in Perak. Spanning some 27 hectares, the development will be rolled out in two phases over the next 20 years, beginning in 2025, under a partnership between Country Annexe Sdn Bhd (CASB) — a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) — and Ipoh Sentral Sdn Bhd (ISSB). A core feature of the project is its ambition to become a vibrant mixed-use transit hub, integrating residential, commercial and public spaces to create a sustainable urban environment while reducing traffic congestion through efficient transport planning. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the project, located next to the Ipoh Railway Station, represented a key initiative by the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) to optimise railway land for high-value developments that also bring positive impact to the local community. "It will be a modern transport hub linking multiple travel modes, supported by business, commercial and residential centres that will undoubtedly raise the quality of life for the people. "This development concept is aligned with the Malaysia Madani aspiration and the National Transport Master Plan, as well as the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), which positions TOD as a key driver of urban growth," he said at the ceremony. Loke added that beyond serving as a transport gateway, the railway network had the potential to redefine Ipoh's landscape into a dynamic modern transit hub that blends mobility, mixed-use development and sustainability. "This approach encourages sustainable lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, centralises development around stations and transport hubs, and reinforces public transport as a preferred choice for the people," he said. Phase One of the project will focus on preserving 2.5ha of green space, including landscaping upgrades and a recreational park, while Phase Two will see mixed-use development across 24.4ha. "This plan will not only add economic and transport value but also stimulate tourism by positioning Ipoh as a modern, well-connected and accessible city," he added. Loke said the Transport Ministry had also outlined plans to strengthen services in tandem with the project, including the extension of the Northern Komuter Line from Butterworth to Ipoh in September 2023. The government has further approved the procurement of 12 new three-car electric train sets worth RM283 million to replace ageing units, in line with growing passenger demand. "Since the Butterworth–Ipoh line extension, average daily ridership has risen by 29 per cent, from 12,668 passengers in 2023 to more than 16,000 in 2024. "Each of the new train sets can accommodate 470 passengers at any one time, with at least 170 seats per train," he said.
