Sheryl Crow Opens Up About Terrifying Backlash To Tesla Protest: I 'Felt Very Afraid'
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, as part of Variety's Power of Women: Nashville cover story, opened up aboutright-wing backlash to a clip of her waving goodbye as her Tesla electric vehicle is towed away. The move came in response to the billionaire's power grab and push to slash federal programs.
'So yeah, there was a moment where I actually really felt very afraid: A man got on my property, in my barn, who was armed,' said Crow, who resides in Nashville, Tennessee.
'It doesn't feel safe when you're dealing with people who are so committed.'
Crow, who shared a clip of her protest in February, noted in the post's caption that her parents 'always said' that 'you are who you hang out with.'
'There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with. So long Tesla,' she wrote.
The singer-songwriter noted that she donated profits from the vehicle sale to NPR, adding that the outlet was 'under threat by President Musk' and her donation was made 'in hopes that the truth will continue to find its way to those willing to know the truth.'
She advised her followers to call their lawmakers and also used the hashtag '#ProtectTheConstitution.'
She told Variety that the response to the Tesla video felt 'different' from when she slammed Walmart over carrying guns in its stores in her 1996 song 'Love Is a Good Thing.'
Crow's song, which suggested Walmart gave children easy access to buy firearms, was controversial at the time and led to the retailer banning her self-titled album from its stores.
'Not everybody was armed — and certainly I didn't live in Tennessee, where everybody is armed,' she said of the time around the song's release.
When asked whether she'd post the Tesla clip again considering the backlash, Crow paused before declaring that she couldn't 'help it.'
'I feel like I'm fighting for my kids. Also, that's the way I was raised,' Crow stressed.
'There have been times when it hasn't really been fun, but I follow my Atticus Finch dad; I'm very similar to him if I see something that seems unfair, you know?'

Lil Nas X arrested and hospitalized after reports of possible overdose, police say
Lil Nas X was hospitalized and arrested in Los Angeles. The 26-year-old "Old Town Road" rapper and two-time Grammy winner – whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill – was arrested just after 6 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, according to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department inmate records. In a statement to USA TODAY, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said, "This morning, around 5:50 am, officers responded to the 11000 block of Ventura Boulevard for a nude man walking in the street." "Upon arrival, the suspect charged at officers and was taken into custody," the LAPD alleged. "He was transported to a local hospital for a possible overdose and placed under arrest for Battery on a Police Officer." Though the LAPD did not identify the man in their initial statement, Madison later confirmed the incident was related to Lil Nas X's arrest. USA TODAY reached out to reps for Lil Nas X for comment. Lil Nas X jailed on suspicion of charging at police on LA street where he walked nearly naked
LOS ANGELES — Rapper Lil Nas X was arrested and briefly taken to a hospital for a suspected overdose Thursday after Los Angeles police say he charged at officers responding to a report of a naked man walking on a busy boulevard. Lil Nas X, whose legal name is Montero Lamar Hill, was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor obstructing an officer and was being held in jail. Officers found him walking on the normally very busy Ventura Boulevard in the Studio City neighborhood shortly before 6 a.m., Los Angeles police spokesman Officer Charles Miller said. After charging at arriving police, he was taken into custody, but the officers, suspecting a drug overdose, took him to a hospital first, Miller said. There was no further word on his condition, but he was released from the hospital and taken to jail after just a few hours. Video obtained by TMZ appeared to show him on the street wearing only underwear and boots. He was being held at Valley Jail in Van Nuys, near where the police found him. Messages to Lil Nas X representatives seeking comment were not immediately answered. The 26-year-old rapper and singer from Atlanta is best known for his huge hit from 2018, 'Old Town Road,' which merged country and hip-hop. It spent a record 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Known for his genre-bending, innovating sounds and style, his first full studio album, 2021's 'Montero,' went to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart and was nominated for a Grammy for album of the year.
