More bad news for rat-infested cities: Climate change is making it worse

More rats: that's the latest indignity that climate change is dumping on major cities around the world, including in Canada's largest city, according to a new study from a group of global rodent and public health scientists.
Growing rat populations are correlated with rising temperatures driven by global warming in at least 11 major cities across the world, according to the study. The cities seeing rat increases include Toronto, famously rat-prone New York City, and many other major centres like Washington, San Francisco and Amsterdam.
The study's authors say it's a wake-up call for cities to move away from a whack-a-mole approach to dealing with rodent complaints.
"I think every large city should have a dedicated team that focuses on nothing but rodents and the issues with rodents," said Jonathan Richardson, lead author of the study and an urban ecologist at the University of Richmond in Virginia.
The study used data on public complaints and inspections about rats from 16 cities around the world. The 11 cities that saw significant increases in rats also experienced greater temperature increases over time, though that correlation doesn't prove the temperature caused the increase. Cities with more dense human populations and more urbanization also saw larger increases in rats.
The research comes at a time when rats have become a big issue in Toronto, which is seeing a large increase in rodent-related complaints after a brief decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. City officials are currently working on a new strategy to proactively deal with the rats.
"Even when you leave city hall or walk around city hall, you can see the burrows in the tree wells. I've walked along one of the streets and a giant rat ran past me in the middle of the day," said Alejandra Bravo, a Toronto city councillor who proposed the successful motion to build a rat strategy.
"I think people need to see action."

Why are rats thriving?
Rats are resilient and remarkably adaptable to different environments, says Alice Sinia, entomologist with pest control company Orkin Canada. It makes biological sense that warmer temperatures would be helping them out, for three big reasons.
The harsh winter acts as a sort of "nature's pest control," with the cold killing rats every year. Climate change has led to milder winters in Toronto, allowing greater numbers of rats to make it through the season.
Meanwhile, the warmer seasons have become longer, and that's when the rats breed and reproduce. Sinia says that could further boost their numbers.
And finally, climate disasters themselves could be bringing rats closer to people and buildings. Sinia used the example of the floods in Toronto in July last year, caused by a line of storms that dumped rain on the city in rapid succession in a matter of hours.
Studies suggest that Canada will see more extreme rain, with warmer air able to hold more moisture that it will dump in short, severe storms.
The flash floods last year caused nearly a billion dollars in insured damages, flooding basements, highways and transit stations across the city. But apart from the damage, floods also overwhelm the city's sewer system — which are teaming with rats that get displaced.
"Now instead of the underground sewers, they [the rats] will come to the surface and when that happens … they're going to start occupying other areas," Sinia said.
"They're going into people's homes, structures… and they're going to have an opportunity to reproduce very fast."
But none of this means people will just have to resign themselves to a rat-filled future, the experts said.
Keeping up the fight
Richardson, the study author, said that they key was a proactive rat strategy that addressed the root causes of infestations. That's similar to what the Toronto council is working on, according to Bravo. City staff will look at food disposal, managing construction sites, new approaches like birth control and other ways to manage the rat population on a larger scale.
Ultimately, Richardson says, cities need to put more money and resources into fighting rats, because simply tolerating them is not a good option.
"They carry at least 50 known zoonotic pathogens and parasites that can make residents sick in cities," he said. A zoonotic infection or disease is one that can transmit between animals and humans.
"They also have mental health impacts for residents where if you're living alongside rats regularly and see them in your daily life, you tend to have worse mental health outcomes and feel less secure in your environment.
"If we can reassess how much tolerance we have for rats in our everyday daily life as we're walking around, maybe that applies some pressure to the city governments and advocates for more resources to knock these populations back."

A previously-unknown virus distantly related to Covid is "strongly associated" with mass die-offs of farmed Pacific oysters in BC, researchers have found. The virus showed up in about two-thirds of the dead and dying oysters the research team collected during a mass die-off on two oyster farms in BC in 2020. Wild oysters collected near the farms weren't infected, hinting at a possible link between the virus and the mass die-offs. The virus — Pacific oyster Nidovirus 1 — is specific to oysters, and doesn't pose a health risk to humans. "We have not demonstrated a causative effect between this virus and mortality at this point, but they're highly associated," said Curtis Suttle, a study co-author and professor of earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences, botany, microbiology and immunology, and the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries. Pacific oysters are the primary shellfish farmed in BC, with the industry worth about $16 million in 2023. In recent years, the province's oyster farmers have lived under the threat of so-called "summer oyster mortality syndrome," a phenomenon where up to 90 per cent of a crop of oysters die within a few days of each other right before reaching market size. The mass die-offs are closely linked to higher water temperatures. As the climate crisis has deepened, BC's average water temperatures have increased by between 0.2°C and 0.6°C, particularly in shallow waters where oysters grow best. Climate change is also causing more extreme temperature swings — ocean heatwaves — which stress the bivalves further, said Suttle. "It's been pretty devastating for our industry," said Nico Prins, executive director of the BC Shellfish Growers Association. "This summer oyster mortality syndrome is a cascade of various stressors that just combine to just be too much for the poor animal to deal with, and they die." He doesn't think the virus will be a "smoking gun" pinpointing the cause of the mass die-offs, but could help offer more insight. Suttle said that his team found that farmed Pacific oysters in Europe and Asia were also routinely infected with the virus, but those infections weren't linked to mass die-offs. But Suttle said the findings should be a reminder that oyster farmers need to be cautious about moving oyster seed — baby oysters — between farms and bodies of water. Most oyster farms don't produce their own seed, instead requiring a labour-intensive process where seed producers induce spawning in broodstock, then grow the larvae into small oysters that are sold to farms. Once at the farms, the oysters are suspended in underwater cages, where they grow to market size. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has few restrictions on where oyster seed can be sold and BC only has a handful of oyster seed producers. Stricter rules apply to older oysters, which can only be moved from farm to farm within specific zones, explained Prins. Jessie McMillan, operations manager at Manatee Holdings, one of BC's oyster seed producers, said that while he'll "definitely be paying attention" to emerging research about the virus, he isn't panicked. "There's no way to predict if it's a causative agent," he explained. Oysters stressed by heat or other well-known factors could be more susceptible to carrying the virus, even if they're asymptomatic. He's more concerned about problems that cause known stress to the shellfish, such as harmful chemicals and bacteria that lax provincial and federal pollution and wastewater regulations allow to enter the ocean, as well as climate change.

Breaking down how a massive U.S. funding cut could impact future mRNA vaccines

The Trump administration says it is pulling half a billion dollars from U.S. government-funded research projects to create new mRNA vaccines. In a statement this week, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine critic, announced a co-ordinated wind-down amounting to the cancellation of $500 million worth (new window) of mRNA vaccine development under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). The technology itself was hailed as recently as the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the Nobel Prize in (new window) Physiology or Medicine (new window) was awarded to two scientists whose mRNA discoveries made it possible to create COVID-19 vaccinations. The committee credited mRNA technology with helping to save millions of lives, prevent severe COVID-19, reduce disease burden and enable societies worldwide to reopen. The loss of research funding has dismayed infectious disease experts who note that mRNA technology allows faster production of shots than older vaccine-production methods, buying precious time if another pandemic virus were to emerge. Here's how medical experts in Canada and the U.S. are reacting to the funding cut and what they say it could mean. Traditionally, vaccines have used inactive or weakened versions of a pathogen that isn't enough to make a person ill, but does kickstart the body's immune response. Messenger RNA (mRNA), discovered in 1961, is a natural molecule that serves as a recipe for the production of proteins in the body. In mRNA vaccines, the approach starts with a snippet of genetic code that carries instructions for making proteins. Scientists pick the protein to target, inject that blueprint into the body's cells, which then make just enough of the proteins to trigger an immune response — essentially producing its own vaccine dose. Scientists are mainly excited about the speed with which mRNA vaccines can get protection into arms. Photo: Peggy Peterson Photography/Penn Medicine/University of Pennsylvania Michael Osterholm, an expert on pandemic preparation with the University of Minnesota, says using older vaccine technology to target a pandemic flu strain would take 18 months to make enough doses to vaccinate only about one-fourth of the world. He says using mRNA technology to make a flu vaccine could change that timeline dramatically. By the end of the first year, we could vaccinate the world. Besides the advantage of how quickly mRNA vaccines can be made, Dr. Allison McGeer, an infectious diseases specialist in Toronto, says they're also easier to standardize. "It has a whole lot of other flexibilities that if you know it works, makes it a really exciting addition" to older technologies used to make vaccines. Beyond COVID vaccines, mRNA vaccine technology is in a Health Canada approved vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). An mRNA vaccine for influenza has also reached Phase 3 clinical trial, the last step before manufacturers submit to regulators to release a vaccine to market. There have also been more than 100 clinical trials (new window) to assess the potential of mRNA vaccine technology to treat various cancers including lung, breast, prostate, melanoma and, more recently, pancreatic cancer (new window) . Dr. Peter Hotez, a professor of pediatrics and molecular virology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, says there's concern that cancelling funding for mRNA vaccine research will have negative consequences for research on other diseases. The mRNA technology is looking really exciting for next-generation cancer immunotherapeutics, said Hotez, who also works at Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development. So will this throw cold water on a whole big effort that we're pursuing as well to develop next-generation cancer vaccine? That's an unknown question. Other research teams are testing potential mRNA-based vaccines to fight HIV (new window) and to treat autoimmune diseases (new window) . These are in early stage clinical trials or animal-stage studies. Though there are other countries working on mRNA vaccine technology, Hotez called the U.S. the single largest vaccine market. He says the announcement that funding was being cut could dissuade pharmaceutical companies from pursuing the vaccine technology if they believe it won't sell there. He says it's unclear whether other industrialized countries could pool their support to make up the $500 million US cut. Are there safety issues with mRNA vaccines as RFK Jr. suggested? In a video (new window) on the social media platform X, Kennedy claimed that mRNA vaccines were unsafe and ineffective. He said that after reviewing the science and consulting top U.S. experts, the department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has determined that mRNA technology poses more risk than benefits against these respiratory viruses. In the video, Kennedy also claimed that mRNA vaccines paradoxically encourage new mutations and can actually prolong pandemics as the virus constantly mutates to escape the protective effects of the vaccine. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan, says Kennedy is wrong about what prolongs pandemics. WATCH | What RFK Jr. gets wrong on mRNA vaccines: Viruses mutate when they replicate, and they replicate when they spread through a population of people, Rasmussen said. The best way to prevent a virus from spreading through a population of people is to make sure those people are protected against the virus by vaccination. In a news release (new window) on Tuesday, Kennedy also referred to COVID and flu as upper respiratory infections, which Hotez notes is incorrect. Unlike the common cold, he says, COVID-19 and influenza are lower respiratory tract infections with significant cardiovascular and other health effects. That's part of the disinformation machine … to downplay the severity of these illnesses, said Hotez. Will lack of funding hurt access to existing flu vaccines? Rasmussen says influenza vaccines won't be affected in the U.S. as they're manufactured using the inactivated virus method, not mRNA. In the video posted to social media, Kennedy said the U.S. supports safe, effective vaccines for every American who wants them. But many infectious disease experts have noted that mRNA vaccines themselves are also safe and effective. The mRNA technology has been proven to be highly effective, Hotez said. By some estimates, 3.2 million American lives were saved by COVID mRNA vaccines during the pandemic. Although mRNA vaccines saved millions of lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. incorrectly argued they are ineffective to justify the Department of Health and Human Service's recent decision to cancel $500 million in government-funded research projects to develop new vaccines using the technology. The longtime vaccine critic said in an X video posted Tuesday evening that mRNA vaccines do not adequately prevent upper respiratory infections such as COVID-19 and the flu, advocating instead for the development vaccines that use other processes.
