Love as a business deal? Whales, unicorns and why Materialists and Anora have a lot in common

'Marriage is a business deal and it always has been.' So says Dakota Johnson's Lucy, an elite Manhattan matchmaker in Celine Song's second feature, Materialists. Lucy may be a modern woman, but her world looks eerily similar to the marriage mart of Jane Austen's day. For Lucy and her clients, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. Or rather, a 'high quality woman', as Lucy would unironically put it.
Materialists drops us head first into a world where coupling off with a partner is a purely financial endeavour; where foolish notions of love are not merely ignored, but deemed to be irrelevant; where women must choose passion or practicality.
If all of this sounds rather archaic or even regressive, that's because it is. And Song knows it. After all, she frequently cites Jane Austen, specifically Pride and Prejudice, as one of her biggest inspirations for the film: 'What an amazing fantasy Pride and Prejudice is, because in that story, the love of your life is also the answer to all your practical problems,' she said to Curzon.
Just as this year's best picture winner Anora was widely viewed as the anti-Pretty Woman for flipping the fantasy of the rich-guy-falls-for-sex-worker-and-whisks-her-out-of-poverty on its head, Materialists functions as a sort of anti-Pride and Prejudice. As Song notes, Austen's beloved novel offers a similar fantasy: that the man you love might also be the answer to your practical financial problems.
In Materialists, as in Anora, the fantasy doesn't quite play out. Not that Lucy is naive enough to expect it to. No, this heroine is all practicality and sense. 'I will die alone or marry a rich man,' she says with resignation at the beginning of the film. This businesslike approach to love doesn't just come from her day job: she has been burned by passionate love in the past: her ex-boyfriend John is a 37-year-old waiter who, despite having the face of Chris Evans, can't seem to make it as an actor.
She gets her chance at the dream marriage of convenience when she meets Harry, an uber rich guy who seems nice enough and has a $12m apartment. He is, her colleague says enviously, a 'unicorn'. This is another unexpected echo of Anora – when Ani, a sex worker looking for a way out of poverty, meets and marries a wealthy young Russian, Vanya, her colleague, also envious, snarks, 'Oh, you caught your whale'.
Each of these reverse fantasies are driven by heroines who are adamantly uninterested in romance. It marks new territory. Even in Austen's day, heroines clung to the fantasy of a love match despite the practical realities of their time. And we progressed from there. The early screwball romcoms of the 1930s and 40s brought us headstrong heroines, while the 80s and 90s screen romances were filled with 'working girls' who were independent, self-sufficient women. Now, it seems, we are entering a new era defined by heroines who openly, proudly proclaim their desire for a practical match – an era of young women who have given up on love.
Fascinatingly, this is playing out in the real world, too. For a generation of young heterosexual women, a 'unicorn' or a 'whale' is seen as the ultimate prize. 'Watching Materialists when the poor man propaganda wins and Lucy picks a broke 37-year-old failed actor over rich, loving Harry who would give her the world,' one person wrote in a TikTok video in response to Materialists that scored more than 22,000 likes. 'I will not fall for broke guy propaganda, she fumbled hard,' another wrote – also liked more than 22,000 times. I can't help but recall last year's 'looking for a man in finance' TikTok trend.
Young women are also reappraising certain female characters who were once judged for their practical approach to love. Meredith Blake, the gold-digging villain of the 1998 The Parent Trap who threatens to stand in the way of true love, now has a new troop of young fans who think she was an 'icon', actually. 'Maturing is realising that Meredith just knew [sic] what she deserves and wouldn't settle for less' – TikTok again. Then there's the growing idolisation of the money-oriented Amy March, kickstarted by Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women. Gerwig put the character's motivation into words: 'Don't sit there and tell me that marriage isn't an economic proposition because it is. It may not be for you, but it most certainly is for me.'
But wait. Little Women and Pride and Prejudice were written years ago when women often really did need to marry well to escape their circumstances. Why is this resonating with young women now? Haven't we moved on? Wasn't decades of feminism meant to dig us out of this reliance on men and marriage? Why are Lucy and Ani and, it would seem, tens of thousands of young women on TikTok, thinking and operating as if they were characters in a Victorian novel? What, in other words, is going on?
Song has some ideas. 'I think it has so much to do with how deeply broken our economic systems are, especially in the US,' she said in a recent Guardian interview. 'As we have learned, the American dream is not achievable. You cannot jump your class. But what's one of the few ways that you can still jump your class? Well, marriage.'
It's all rather cold and depressing. Thankfully, though, while these films may be reflecting a real, somewhat unsettling cultural shift, they defy the philosophy that romance is merely a business deal. They stand up for love. Lucy finds her 'unicorn' and Ani gets her 'whale' – but each 'love' story ends in disappointment. Lucy has to face up to the fact that she does need a little love in her life, actually – even if it means forgoing the nice restaurants.
Meanwhile, Ani is confronted with the reality that Vanya doesn't love her or even respect her enough to stand up for their marriage once his oligarch parents arrive to break them up. In each film, the third act delivers relief in the form of real human connection. Love does matter – even, and perhaps especially, in our increasingly money-obsessed world. And cinema is still fighting for it.

Brad's latest project is a sequel to 2019's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film - which featured Sydney Sweeney, Mikey Madison, Austin Butler, and Margaret Qualley who were all up-and-comers at the time - starred Pitt as Cliff, a stuntman for the Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio). DiCaprio is not listed as a cast member on the show's IMDb page, which describes the plot as showcasing 'more of Cliff Booth's backstory in his new role as a Hollywood fixer.' Tarantino previously fleshed out the character beyond how he's portrayed in the film with a novelization of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood that he wrote. While the upcoming film will focus on Cliff, Pitt clarified last month that the project was 'not really a sequel but an episode' featuring the character. The Australian actress best known for her Emmy Award winning performance as Princess Diana in The Crown (she is seen in September 2024) 'This is something Quentin Tarantino wrote. It's an episode, not really a sequel, but an episode of the character from Once Upon A Time,' he told Deadline. 'But he didn't want to direct it at this point, and my friend David Fincher, our friend, I say our mutual friend, David Fincher stepped in to direct it,' Pitt explained. 'So we're doing that for Netflix and we're gonna start in July, it should be really fun. It should be good fun.' In addition to Pitt, the cast consists of Elizabeth Debicki, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Scott Caan and JB Tadena. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood earned numerous awards and nominations, including multiple Oscar nods.

A married hotel CEO in Michigan allegedly groped and kissed a female employee during a company outing to a Justin Timberlake concert. Asad Malik, the CEO of the Amerilodge Group, which owns and manages multiple hotel chains in the Midwest, has been accused of sexual harassment, assault, and battery by his former employee, Stephanie Starling. Starling alleges that while at the concert in February, Malik told her that he wanted a kiss, adding, 'bet it would be a good kiss too. Probably later tonight.' Starling nervously laughed in response to the unwanted attention, but Malik allegedly kept pursuing her. The CEO later came up to her, standing silently, and allegedly told her that he was 'just looking at her lips' and thinking of the kiss, according to the lawsuit. In reaction to the stunning comments, Starling quickly found her supervisor and general manager, pleading with them not to leave her side to avoid being alone with Malik. However, later that night, she found herself seated next to Malik after he squeezed into a booth to be next to her. Malik then 'slid his hand under her right thigh and touched her butt,' according to the lawsuit. Starling was terrified after the encounter and was 'noticeably trembling in fear' while she tried to eat. Starling escaped the situation by excusing herself to go to the bathroom. When the show began and the group went to their seats, Malik allegedly attempted to get Starling to sit next to him. When Starling's general manager sat with her instead, Malik was 'visibly angry with the situation,' the lawsuit states. While in the bathroom during the concert, she called her father in tears, begging him not to call the police. Her general manager and supervisor overheard the phone call and told her they were planning on reporting Malik's behavior. When the group returned to a nearby hotel after the show, Malik allegedly said he needed to talk to her and asked her to get in his vehicle. He then allegedly drove to a dark area and told her it was 'time for that kiss.' Starling rejected the advances, which made Malik agitated, and he pressed her about why she wouldn't kiss him. She demanded to be taken back to the hotel and threatened to walk back to the snow if he didn't drive her. When she returned to work at the Marriott in Bay City, Starling notified HR and was told that a third party would investigate her accusations. Starling met with an attorney virtually to explain what happened, but alleges that the company never followed up about her complaint. While she continued working, she noticed coworkers were gossiping about the investigation. Starling called her supervisor, crying, and soon after noticed that her company email was revoked. She was then instructed to submit an official resignation letter, despite having informed HR that she had no intention of quitting. Not even a month after the concert, she received an email that HR was 'upholding her resignation.' She was later informed that the third-party investigation couldn't substantiate her claims. Starling's attorney, Jack Shulz, told Daily Mail that he sees the comparisons between her story and the viral video of the Astronomer CEO Andrew Byron and his HR chief, Kristin Cabot. 'Although a lot of the focus is the comparison to the deplorable acts of this CEO and that of the Astronomer CEO at the Coldplay, a harder look should be given to the acts of the two human resources departments, which are present themselves as being neutral and having open doors to employees,' he said. 'Here, Starling and others immediately reported the incident, HR acted to protect the company, and she was terminated for speaking up. Both cases demonstrate that HR is in bed with the company---literally and figuratively.' Starling told the Detroit Free Press that she was offered a settlement payment, calling it 'hush money.' 'You're not going to put a price tag on me, she added. 'I do have the balls to speak up — and it's not okay.' The company stated in a filing with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that Malik denied the claims, and no one witnessed the alleged assault.

Actor Aubrey Plaza continued to return to the public eye Tuesday night, eight months on from her husband Jeff Baena's tragic death. The filmmaker, who Plaza married in 2021, died by suicide aged 47 in January, after which it was revealed they had split four months before his death. The grief-stricken star has kept a low profile since his devastating passing but made a rare public appearance this week when she was spotted courtside at a WNBA game. Plaza soaked up the action at Barclays Center as the New York Liberty took on the Minnesota Lynx in a rematch of last year's WNBA Finals. She was joined by broadway and legend and close friend Patti LuPone, who she starred alongside in the hit Marvel series, 'Agatha All Along,' last year. The pair appeared to be in good spirits as they were spotted waving a flag on the sidelines and being greeted by Ellie the Elephant, the Liberty's iconic mascot. Plaza cut a casual figure in athletic shorts and an oversized t-shirt, while LuPone donned a blue and white printed jumpsuit and leather jacket, finishing off her look with a pair of blacked out sunglasses. The duo became fast friends while working on the set of 'Agatha All Along,' with Plaza even briefly moving in with the on-stage icon while Plaza was performing a play. Plaza's courtside appearance came just hours after she gave her first interview following her husband's death. The 'Agatha All Along' star detailed her grief as she joined her close friend and former 'Parks and Rec' co-star Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast. 'Just to get it out the way, people want to see you and want to see how you are, they love you. You've had this terrible, terrible, tragic year...,' Amy said. 'You lost your husband, you've been dealing with that and you've been looking for all different ways in which to feel and find support.' When Amy asked how she was feeling, Aubrey stated: 'Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you. Overall, I'm here and I'm functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I'm okay, but it's like a daily struggle'. She went on: 'This is a really dumb analogy and it was kind of a joke at a certain point, but I actually mean it. Did you see that movie The Gorge? The Gorge is a 2025 movie starring Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sigourney Weaver, with a synopsis listed as: 'Two highly-trained operatives are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge... 'Protecting the world from a mysterious evil that lurks within. They work together to keep the secret in the gorge.' Her chat with Amy is her first discussion of her grief, having made a brief comment about his passing shortly after, saying through a representative: 'This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support... 'Please respect our privacy during this time." In March, it was revealed that Aubrey had secretly split from Jeff just four months before his shock suicide at 47 after parting ways in September last year. An LA County Medical Examiner's autopsy report obtained by revealed that the filmmaker and actress had separated back in September of last year, and she had been living in New York at the time his body was discovered on January 3. The report detailed how the Life After Beth director had been 'experiencing marital difficulties' in his final months and how he had been in therapy. An investigator noted in the documents that Aubrey, whose name was redacted in the final report, said she had spoken with Jeff the night before his death. The report also tragically revealed that Aubrey had been concerned for her estranged husband's wellbeing. The paperwork said: 'In October 2024, Baena made concerning remarks to [Plaza] which prompted her to call a friend to perform a welfare check on her husband. Baena had been attending therapy since that event.' The medical examiner's report also determined that Baena did not have drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death. It stated that Aubrey 'knew her husband to be alive' as of January 3 because he had sent her a text message that morning. The report indicated that a dog walker discovered his body after hearing loud music coming from his home, which she said was 'unusual.' After she called him and didn't get an answer, she entered the home and discovered his remains.
