Sundance Picks Its New Home: Boulder, Colo.
After a year of deliberations, copious site visits and scores of plane rides, the board of the Sundance Institute has chosen Boulder, Colo., to host its film festival beginning January 2027.
'Boulder is a tech town, a college town, it's a really creative town,' Eugene Hernandez, the festival's director, said. 'It's just a really creative place. And that integration of the artsy community with the university side of it all, is really dynamic.'
It's also 10 times the size of Park City, Utah, where the festival has been held since the actor and director Robert Redford started it in 1981. As the festival kept growing, Park City began bursting at the seams.
Ebs Burnough, chair of the Sundance Institute, said the move to another mountain town would help Sundance maintain its connection to the natural world. 'It's easy to get drawn into that amazing thing that Robert Redford really believed in, which was that commune between the artist and nature, and to actually be able to get away from the verticalness of cities.'
To frequent Sundance goers, the move to Boulder is likely to be less jarring than shifting the location to Cincinnati, one of two other finalist cities. Salt Lake City was also in the running, and the loss of the festival will be significant to the state of Utah. The festival generated $132 million in revenue for the state in 2024, according to a report released by the festival.
Sundance announced last April that it was exploring the possibility of a new home. Park City just didn't have enough movie theaters, and lodging prices had become exorbitant. A good portion of the locals were ready for it to go, too. While Sundance added 1,730 jobs according to the festival, it also kept skiers away during a prime month of winter snow.
'Words cannot express the sincere gratitude I have for Park City, the state of Utah, and all those in the Utah community that have helped to build the organization,' Mr. Redford said in a statement.
Boulder, about 30 miles outside of Denver, has around 100,000 residents compared with Park City's 8,200. The festival intends to center its activities in the city's downtown and its nearby theaters, venues and the Pearl Street Mall, a pedestrian street with restaurants and cafes. The festival will also collaborate with the University of Colorado Boulder.
Initially, over 100 U.S. locations offered to host the festival. Sundance winnowed them down to the 67 that could meet a variety of requirements, including adequate screening and lodging locations, and proximity to a sizable international airport. The Sundance selection committee then invited 13 of those cities to submit a proposal. Six of them — Atlanta; Boulder; Cincinnati; Louisville, Ky., Salt Lake City; and Santa Fe, N.M. — were later selected for site visits.
Sundance will not be the only significant film festival held in Colorado. The Telluride Film Festival has been operating over Labor Day weekend in Telluride, a mountain town in the southwest part of the state, for over 50 years.

Trailer For REALM OF SATAN a Very Borning Documentary About Modern Satanism — GeekTyrant
Monument Releasing has released the trailer for Realm of Satan , Scott Cummings' documentary that dives deep into the world of Satanism, and it's not what you'd expect. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and I watched it, but it was a very borning and completely uninteresting film. There's definitly nothing exciting about modern satanism. Not like the wild tales we;'ve heard from the 70s and 80s! The documentary takes viewers inside the controversial Realm of Satan church, offering a close look at Satanists' daily lives as well as their rituals and beliefs. According to the official description, the film 'captures Satanists in both the everyday and the extraordinary, revealing their mystical world of magic, mystery, and misanthropy.' Cummings approaches the subject with an artistic len: 'Cummings crafts each frame like a painting to allow the wild, elegant, and dynamic world of Satanists to unfold on screen.' The project features figures like Peter Gilmore, Blanche Barton, and Peggy Nadramia, key names associated with the Church of Satan. It's produced by Pacho Velez ( Searchers, The American Sector ), Caitlin Mae Burke ( We Could Be King ), and Molly Gandour ( GasLand ). Cummings expressed excitement about the theatrical rollout: 'I'm thrilled to be working with Monument on the theatrical release of Realm of Satan. The movie theater is a magical space, and this film demands that singular experience. 'Monument has stood behind and celebrated the uniqueness of this film and I am thrilled to bring audiences into our spell together. I have been a Mubi subscriber and cheerleader since their earliest day and found some of my favorite modern films through their impeccable curatorial vision. I couldn't think of a better and more exciting partner to work with.' The movie will make its U.S. theatrical debut on July 17th in Philadelphia, followed by runs at New York's Nitehawk (Prospect Park) and Metrograph. After its limited release, it hits digital platforms on September 2 and later lands exclusively on MUBI starting October 3 for U.S. and Canadian subscribers.

'Together' has Dave Franco and Alison Brie in a gripping new horror movie that's 'The Substance' meets rom-com
I've had my eye on "Together" since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year. A body horror movie about a couple who are forcibly — and literally — stuck together? Played by real-life husband-and-wife duo Dave Franco and Alison Brie? Needless to say, I was sold right away. It also didn't hurt that the early reviews were overwhelmingly positive. It was the first movie to sell at Sundance, and currently, it has a 91% "fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences not far behind at 79%. I finally got to see the movie earlier this week, and it doesn't quite fully commit to being a body horror movie. "Together" is more of a romantic comedy at times, with some horror movie sheen to it and a supernatural element that drives the plot forward. While I'm not quite sure it lives up to the hype, I had a blast and left the theater satisfied. I'd have liked more commitment to the horror genre, but the rom-com elements work thanks to Franco and Brie's natural chemistry as a married couple, especially as the movie approaches its climax. As I mentioned, "Together" is a body horror movie, starring the real-life couple of Dave Franco and Alison Brie as fictional couple Tim and Millie. And they are in a rut. But when Millie gets a teaching job that moves them out of the city and into the countryside, it provides them with an opportunity to rekindle their relationship. Or rather, it would if this were a romantic comedy. It's not, though — at least, not fully. "Together" is a horror movie at heart, and on a hike, the pair gets lost in the ruins of what feels like a church that collapsed into a cave. After they get back home, they suddenly find they can't keep their hands off each other — literally. One month free trial! Try Hulu free for 30 days and check out tons of hit movies and shows at no cost. I'll fully admit, I went into this movie expecting "The Substance" 2.0, or at least something along those lines. "Together" will have you laugh, it'll have you jump and it will have you on the edge of your seat. It's definitely worth a visit to your local cinema. You do get a few moments that allow the movie to call itself body horror. Tim and Millie get stuck together at times, with their hands even managing to crawl under each other's skin on occasion. And at one point, we do see a creature that is doing its best impression of Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley's final form in Coralie Fargeat's body horror masterpiece. But this is not "The Substance." Yes, there's occasional body horror, but there are also elements of psychological horror as well as occult and supernatural plot elements. It also feels like a rom-com at times. The movie is, at its core, centered around the relationship between Tim and Millie. The plot of the movie may be about two people stumbling upon a supernatural force that tries to force them to physically meld into one being, but the story of the movie is about a couple in a rut who, through a harrowing journey, are brought closer together. For what it's worth, that story does work. The romantic comedy at the core of this movie is a good one, and the melding of horror elements makes it fun and relatively fresh in terms of the rom-com genre, even if it's a relatively tame horror movie. So my advice is to just go into this movie with the proper expectations, even though, in fairness, I went in with gory aspirations that weren't met and still had a great time. "Together" will have you laugh, it'll have you jump and it will have you on the edge of your seat. It's definitely worth a visit to your local cinema.
