DRB-Hicom to buy up Spirit AeroSystems Malaysia in RM426m deal

Malay Mail6 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — DRB-Hicom Bhd has announced plans to acquire the Malaysian operations of aerospace manufacturer Spirit AeroSystems for approximately US$95.2 million (RM426.1 million).
The company said in a stock exchange filing today that the acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Once finalised, Spirit AeroSystems Malaysia Sdn Bhd will be fully owned by Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTRM), DRB-Hicom's wholly owned aerospace subsidiary, The Edge reported.
DRB-Hicom described the deal as a strategic move to strengthen CTRM's competitive position in the aerospace industry by expanding its aerostructure expertise.
Spirit Malaysia supplies major components and assemblies for Airbus and Boeing aircraft, including the A220, A320, A321, A350, B737 and B787, from its facilities at the Malaysia International Aerospace Centre in Subang.
The Subang site also functions as Spirit Malaysia's Southeast Asia hub and supports key global programmes.
In 2024, Spirit Malaysia posted a profit after tax of RM70.1 million on revenue exceeding RM1 billion.
CTRM develops and manufactures composite parts such as wing components for the A320, A350 and A380, nacelles for the A350, and various aerostructures for the A400M, B737, B787, B767 and B777 aircraft.
According to DRB-Hicom, the combined entity will benefit from greater operational scale, stronger customer relationships, and improved leverage across the aerospace supply chain.
The acquisition comes as Boeing seeks to purchase Spirit AeroSystems' US parent while Airbus has agreed to take over assets serving its own programmes, with DRB-Hicom noting that the deal is subject to regulatory approval and carries a US$7 million termination fee if blocked.

RM6.2b project to ease Bukit Merah water woes heads to Cabinet this week, says Perak MB

TELUK INTAN, Aug 11 — The Cabinet paper on the implementation of the water transfer project to Bukit Merah to address the critical water shortage problem in northern Perak will be brought to this week's cabinet meeting. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the paper took into account requests and comments from the state government because the water supply is the state's right and his party knows the best course of action for the project. 'The implementation process also needs to give importance to contractors in the state. We have decided that the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation should agree to the collaboration of PKNPk (Perak State Development Corporation) and Gamuda as the implementers, taking into account the involvement of local small contractors,' he said. He said this at a press conference after the Customer Day Programme at Teluk Intan Municipal Council Hall, Langkap here today. Saarani said the water transfer project from Sungai Perak to Bukit Merah, which was implemented through a joint venture (JV) between PKNPk and Gamuda Bhd, costing about RM6.2 billion, was seen to provide economic benefits to the people of the state. According to Saarani, the project alignment was determined as a result of a series of workshops involving state government representatives to ensure its implementation meets the state's water needs. He said the project would benefit the agricultural irrigation system in northern Perak and meet the water needs of the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) in the Kerian district. 'I hope this project can be expedited because we want to solve the problem of agricultural irrigation in the north and help with KIGIP's water needs. 'If there is a surplus (of water), then we will consider selling water to Penang,' he said. Last July, Gamuda Bhd through a JV with PKNPk was given a mandate by the state government to design, build and operate a water treatment and distribution facility located in Kerian. The project will supply treated water to the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP), while the surplus supply will be channeled to Penang. It will be implemented through privatization, where the agreement is expected to be finalised within 90 days, with a minimum concession period of 40 years and is expected to begin operating by 2030. — Bernama

Johor first in Malaysia with Tier 4 data centres using recycled water, says MB

JOHOR BAHRU, 11 Aug — Johor has become the first state in Malaysia to adopt Tier 4 data centre technology, integrating advanced air cooling and wastewater recycling systems as part of its commitment to sustainable development in the sector. As of June 30, 2025, Johor Special Water (JSW) has received requests for alternative water supply totalling 136 million litres per day from data centres in the state, underscoring rapid industry growth and increasing demand for sustainable water solutions. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said several important agreements were signed today to support Johor's water sustainability initiatives and green technology advancement. 'First, the Treated Effluent Supply Agreement between Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) and JSW marks a strategic collaboration to supply treated effluent from IWK sewage treatment plants across Johor for the production of reclaimed water to be used in data centre cooling systems. 'This makes Johor the first state in Malaysia to adopt Tier 4 data centre technology, which includes air cooling systems and wastewater recycling technology,' he said in his opening speech at a ceremony to recognise the use of alternative water in Johor's data centre industry here today. Onn Hafiz said that the second agreement, between JSW, Bridge Data Centres (BDC) and Computility Technology (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, involves supplying treated effluent for reclaimed water production. 'Since June 9, 2025, BDC has begun producing reclaimed water at its data centre located in the Ulu Tiram Industrial Area — making it the first investor to directly apply this technology from an IWK treatment plant. For Computility, the development of its reclaimed water production system is progressing intensively and is now in the final phase of implementation. Located at Setia Eco Garden, Iskandar Puteri, the project is expected to be fully completed and operational by December, further strengthening Johor's sustainable data centre ecosystem,' he explained. He also highlighted that the third agreement, a Raw Water Supply Agreement between JSW and DayOne Data Centres Sdn Bhd, under which JSW will supply raw water from Sungai Tebrau for treatment and use in the cooling system of a data centre in the Kempas Tech Park. 'Construction works for the reclaimed water supply system are actively ongoing and are expected to be completed and operational by November,' Onn Hafiz said. The Johor government hopes these agreements will further strengthen water sustainability efforts while accelerating the development of resilient, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly data centre infrastructure in the state. — Bernama
