Nicole Curtis returns to 'Rehab Addict' after 3 years, reveals 'setback in my life'

USA Today6 hours ago

Home renovation aficionado Nicole Curtis is back on HGTV after nearly three years.
With the Season 9 premiere June 24, the 48-year-old historic building preservation enthusiast will appear in new "Rehab Addict" episodes for the first time since 2018. (The spinoff "Rehab Addict Lake House Rescue" was her most recent on-air appearance; it aired a season in 2022.)
The HGTV star acknowledged it hasn't been smooth sailing behind the scenes.
"I had a setback in my life that just rocked me to the core, and it was one of those moments where I thought, how do I get through this one?" she told People in an interview that was published June 24.
Though she did not delve into the nature of the "setback," she revealed it caused her to reevaluate her priorities in life, saying, "I prayed on it, and it was just devastating for me. I had to make a decision right there and then like, 'OK, we're going to let this affect us for a very long time, or we're going to pick it up and go.'"
She detailed a spontaneous 2022 trip in which she'd forgotten her wallet, leaving her with $72 in U.S. dollar bills on a layover in Paris. Rather than devolving into panic, Curtis saw the travel disaster as "a sign" and soon found herself purchasing a Wyoming home sight unseen.
"I'm going to knock off all my wish lists tonight," she'd thought at the time. Now that home, described by HGTV as "an 1890s house subjected to a bad flip," will star in the upcoming four "Rehab Addict" episodes, which she called "an evolved version" of the show that debuted in 2010.
"I'm no longer this little poor mommy in Minneapolis driving around with this pickup truck with two dogs and a kid," she said. "But I'm still me, I'm still Nicole Curtis from Detroit, and I want you to save that building and we're going to do it."
In 2022, speaking with People about returning to TV with "Rehab Addict Rescue," Curtis admitted, "I was completely burned out" after eight seasons of "Rehab Addict." She added, "There was so much time in those ten years where I didn't get to enjoy it at all. I was stressed out."
Nicole Curtis is giving her sons the 'gift' of privacy
In her recent People interview, Curtis also referenced the tumultuous family life that made headlines nearly a decade ago. Nearly a decade ago, she and former partner Shane Maguire began a custody battle over their now 10-year-old son, Harper.
"Our family went through a lot over the years, and so that's definitely something that I have done my best to keep my family out of the public eye and focus on the houses," she told People. "That's always where we wanted that focus to be."
Curtis revealed she won't be showing as much of her family in the new episodes, though her older son, Ethan, previously made appearances.
"I think there's one gift we can give our children, and I give them privacy. They're out in public with me a lot, and I shield them," she said. "But I won't do that again. My boys are my most precious, precious things in the entire world to me."

‘Cobra Kai' actor Alicia Hannah-Kim rips co-star Martin Kove in bodycam video after what he called ‘playful' biting incident: ‘That is assault!'

Newly released bodycam footage shows 'Cobra Kai' actor Alicia Hannah-Kim ripping into co-star Martin Kove after he bit her at a fan convention — and the 78-year-old's bizarre 'playful' excuse for the incident. 'You can not bite people, that is not okay,' a police officer is heard telling Kove outside Washington State Summer Con in Puyallup on Sunday after Hannah-Kim reported the incident, according to video obtained by NBC News. 'That is assault!' Hannah-Kim, 37, added. 5 Alicia Hannah-Kim (L) is seen talking to a police officer about the incident involving her co-star Martin Kove (far right). Puyallup Police Dept. The officer told Kove that it was '100%' up to his co-star if she wanted to press charges against him, then asked what reason he had to bite her. 'I really apologize. I was just playing because we're very playful together, and I bit down too hard,' Kove explained, prompting Hannah-Kim to turn toward the officer in shock over his reasoning. 'She's got a mouth mark on her,' the officer replied. The Australian actress then sternly told Kove they 'do not play like that' and passionately told him his actions made her 'really pissed.' 'You have left a mark on my body, which in your 80-year-old brain, you think is 'play,'' she scolded him. 'Sir, were you raised in a ditch?' 5 The officer told Kove that it was '100%' up to his co-star if she wanted to press charges against him, then asked what reason he had to bite her. Puyallup Police Dept. Hannah-Kim then further chastised the 'Karate Kid' villain for losing his temper with her when she confronted him over the bite. 'You yelled at me! You had the audacity! How dare you, sir,' she told him. Kove apologized for getting 'angry,' and said he was mad because he was 'indulging in something improper by [biting her].' The video cuts to show Hannah-Kim having the officer document the bite mark and stating that she wants the incident to be 'on his record.' 5 Hannah-Kim is seen having the cop document the bite mark for the report against Kove. Puyallup Police Dept. 'I would like it to go on his record, on the record between me and him, so that he cannot ever do this to me again,' she told the cop. The bodycam footage then cuts again to Kove sitting on a bench and ends with the officer telling him his co-star isn't pressing charges, but wants the bizarre incident documented so it 'doesn't happen again.' Hannah-Kim claimed the alleged attack happened when she tapped Kove on the shoulder to greet him at their cast booth, according to an informational police report obtained by People. 'Martin Kove suddenly grabbed her arm and bit her upper arm so hard it nearly drew blood, and she yelled out in pain,' the documents read. 'Once Martin Kove finished biting her arm, he grabbed her arm again and began kissing it where he had bit her.' 5 Hannah-Kim attends Netflix's 'Cobra Kai' Season 5 Premiere at Los Angeles State Historic Park on Sept. 7, 2022, in Los Angeles, California. FilmMagic Hannah-Kim — who starred alongside Kove as Kim Da-Eun for Seasons 5 and 6 of the Netflix series — claimed her husband, Sebastian Roche, was there and witnessed the alleged attack. When the pair confronted the actor, he reportedly 'exploded on them' while insisting 'he did not do anything wrong.' The actress then ran to an officer working the event and reported the incident. After speaking with Hannah-Kim and the officer, Kove was 'escorted out of Summer Con,' per the report. Kove has since apologized publicly for biting his co-star and said he 'deeply' regrets his actions. 5 Kove attends the '1923' S2 Premiere at Harmony Gold on Feb. 19, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. 'I've always respected her and considered her a highly professional and talented co-worker on 'Cobra Kai.' I was being playful in the moment but went too far and there is absolutely no excuse for my behavior.' 'I regret my actions for which I take full responsibility for what I did, and again I apologize to her and her husband. I'm committed to learning from this and it will never happen again,' he added. The actor found fame as John Kreese in the 1984 movie 'The Karate Kid.' He reprised the role for Parts 2 and 3 of the film franchise. He joined Netflix's show 'Cobra Kai' in 2018 and starred in the series until showrunners announced it would not be returning after Season 6.

Nicole Curtis Reveals Why Her Ex-Boyfriend Appears on New Season of ‘Rehab Addict' (Exclusive)

Nicole Curtis works alongside her ex-boyfriend Ryan Sawtelle on season 9 of Rehab Addict 'We were together a long time" and "never really stayed out of contact," she tells PEOPLE Curtis says she enlisted Sawtelle's help since he was located near a Wyoming property she was restoringNicole Curtis has help from a surprising collaborator on the new season of Rehab Addict — her ex-boyfriend Ryan Sawtelle. In the season premiere (airing June 24), Sawtelle works as a carpenter on a Wyoming property from the 1890s that the HGTV star sets out to restore after a poorly executed flip. 'We were together a long time and I was very close to his family,' Curtis tells PEOPLE, explaining why she welcomed Sawtelle on the show. 'So we never really stayed out of contact. Your lives are so enmeshed.' Curtis bought the Wyoming home on a whim online during a chaotic trip to Paris in July 2022, which she says came after a 'setback' in her life. Buoyed by an averted near-crisis after she accidentally boarded the flight without her wallet, she recalls thinking, "'I'm going to knock off all my wish lists tonight," before making the spur-of-the-moment purchase. When she got to Wyoming, she enlisted Sawtelle for the renovation project. Curtis bought the Wyoming home on a whim online during a chaotic trip to Paris in July 2022, which she says came after a 'setback' in her life. 'I didn't know anyone in Wyoming, but I knew somebody near Wyoming, and so I gave him a call,' she adds of Sawtelle. 'We just went out there together and checked out the house. It wasn't anything else. There was definitely no reconciliation or 'Maybe this was a mistake not being together.' No, no, no, .... Us going separate paths was a hundred percent the best idea that we ever had.' The former couple began dating in 2018. The following year, the home restoration expert opened up about her relationship with Sawtelle, whom she met after she began following his niece's battle with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an aggressive brain tumor found in children, via his Instagram. 'My heart is happy and having him near me brings a calm I've never known,' Curtis told PEOPLE at the time. 'Not that it's been easy. Everyone has a great first few months rocking everything they have in common. But after six months, you start digging into the other stuff and you either grow apart or negotiate those differences and move forward. And [you] have to make a decision to focus on the fun.' Curtis, whose return to HGTV comes three years after the spinoff Rehab Addict: Lake House Rescue aired in 2022, is staying mum on whether she's currently dating anyone special. 'I keep my private life private because I think there's been some very traumatic moments in my life that weren't so private,' she says. 'Another lesson learned. I tell people all the time, if you're in my circle, then you know what's going on in my life. Other than that, I stay pretty mute about everything.' Curtis has two sons: Ethan, whom she welcomed in 1997 with her ex Steven Cimini, and Harper, born in 2015, whom she shares with ex Shane Maguire. She went through a very public years-long custody battle over Harper with Maguire and became an outspoken advocate for the rights of breastfeeding mothers. Her decision to continue to breastfeed Harper at age 3 drew criticism from some and became a point of contention in her legal fight with Maguire. The former couple reached a custody agreement in October 2018. 'Our family went through a lot over the years, and so that's definitely something that I have done my best to keep my family out of the public eye and focus on the houses,' she continues. 'That's always where we wanted that focus to be.' The season premiere of Rehab Addict airs Tuesday, June 24 on HGTV at 9 ET/PT. Read the original article on People
