
Ex-Qantas boss Alan Joyce breaks silence to defend his controversial legacy as union accuses him of 'malicious intent'
In his first address in nearly two years, Mr Joyce shared his vision for the industry at an aviation conference in Sydney on Thursday but skirted around his illegal sacking of more than 1800 ground crew and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
'Here's the real insight: resilience isn't a reaction... it's a decision made years in advance, often when it's uncomfortable, even unpopular,' he told a crowd of more than 200 aviation executives and airline employees.
'Qantas was the only major Australian airline not to go bankrupt during or after the pandemic... that wasn't luck, that was resilience.'
It came only days before Qantas is expected to be fined up to nine figures for the mass staff sackings which a court ruled was designed to curb union bargaining power in wage negotiations.
The Transport Workers Union (TWU) remarked the former chief executive was again seeking to downplay the consequences of the unlawful outsourcing.
'Alan Joyce did not save Qantas, he set out with malicious intentions to destroy it,' a spokesperson told the Daily Mail.
'1800 illegally sacked Qantas workers are not thankful for the decisions made under Joyce's watch. Their lives will never be the same.'
Despite steering Qantas through the pandemic - the only major Australian airline to not go bankrupt - Mr Joyce quit the airline under a cloud of soaring customer dissatisfaction and regulatory backlash in September 2023.
Qantas slashed his $9million bonus from his departing pay packet, with other executives and directors also facing a cut after the brand turbulence.
The airline has since agreed to set up a $120million compensation fund for its wrongly sacked workers after reaching a deal with the TWU.
Qantas also sold tickets to cancelled flights over several years, triggering more legal turmoil and a $100 million fine after it was sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
Speaking generally at the conference, Mr Joyce defended the cost-cutting efforts during the pandemic which included 'reducing operations' and 'standing down staff'.
'Qantas, at one point, was just 11 weeks away from running out of cash. That's not a buffer; that's staring into the abyss,' he said.
'But we didn't fall. We made hard and painful decisions.'
Mr Joyce seemed amused by media attention surrounding his appearance but quipped that it at least meant 'Donald Trump didn't do anything weird last night'.
'It's great that I'm no longer head of the national carrier and I can make jokes like that without worrying about F-16s turning around Qantas aircraft,' he said, according to the Australian.
Mr Joyce indicated plans to remain in the aviation industry, but refused to state what shape his next steps might take.
A memoir, which his manager Robert Joske told the Australian Financial Review in May had attracted 'a lot of interest from publishers', may also keep Mr Joyce busy as he reflects on his legacy.
He also shared his hopes for the future of the industry, stating airlines must take more climate action, including building a sustainable aviation fuel industry to 'transform the environmental footprint of flight'.
'If we don't, we risk losing public trust, regulatory permission and, ultimately, our social licence to operate,' he said.
'This isn't fringe, it's the future and it's grounded in a very human concern for sustainability and intergenerational fairness.'
Federal Court judge Michael Lee is due to hand down a fine over the illegal outsourcing on Monday, with the TWU pushing for the maximum fine of $121million.

Sir Grant Shapps has been cleared to join a defence startup by parliament's standards watchdog, as long as he promises not to work on defence-related matters. In a move which has been criticised by MPs and experts, the former defence secretary has been allowed to become chairman of Cambridge Aerospace. He was given the go-ahead by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba), which oversees the jobs given to ministers and special advisers when they leave office. Sir Grant told the watchdog the firm, which was founded after the Conservatives left office, will 'develop technologies to reduce risks to aviation'. Acoba agreed, allowing him to offer 'strategic direction and high level advice', but said he cannot work on defence-related issues. Labour MP Phil Brickell told The Guardian the watchdog's condition was 'stretching credulity' given Cambridge Aerospace's own statements in public and its supporters. The startup has raised millions of pounds off the back of a presentation describing it as a 'defence tech' firm and outlining the need to prepare for a 'new era of warfare', according to a report by The Upstart. Its first product, dubbed Skyhammer, has been compared to Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system and aims to intercept drones and cruise missiles. Co-founder Prof Steven Barrett also told Bloomberg the company had 'one mission', which is to 'protect the UK and our allies from the well-known threats we face from the skies'. Sir Grant was defence secretary from August 2023 until the general election in July 2024, which meant he had to apply for Acoba approval to take up the role. Acoba's aim is to prevent ministers and private companies from unfairly benefitting from information gained by those working in government. It identified a 'limited' conflict of interests for Sir Grant, adding: 'Whilst you will have had oversight of a wide range of information on policy, operations and matters generally affecting defence, there is no direct overlap with your access to sensitive information as this work focuses on civilian aerospace.' Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to scrap Acoba after repeated criticism of it as 'toothless', with the PM replacing it with a new Ethics and Integrity Commission created from the Committee on Standards in Public Life. Sir Grant told The Guardian: 'I joined Cambridge Aerospace because I have always believed in the importance of protecting our civilian airspace — a belief only strengthened by witnessing the devastation caused by Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Thungela expects industry-wide thermal coal output curbs due to weaker prices
Aug 18 (Reuters) - Global thermal coal producers are expected to curtail output as low prices for the fossil fuel persist amid an uncertain economic outlook, South African coal miner Thungela's outgoing CEO July Ndlovu said on Monday. South Africa's top thermal coal exporter reported an 80% slump in its profit to 248 million rand ($14 million) in the six months to June 30, mainly due to lower prices for the fossil fuel. Thungela said geopolitical tensions and rising tariffs were significantly disrupting global supply chains and constraining economic growth, hitting coal demand and prices. Neither the company nor Ndlovu elaborated. Thermal coal prices have also come under pressure from a global shift away from the polluting fuel to cleaner energy sources, as well as increased domestic production in top import markets China and India. The low prices could see further cuts in output after major producers in Indonesia and Colombia slowed down production while Australia's production was hurt by accidents and bad weather, Ndlovu said. "Further production curtailment is likely to aid rebalancing of supply and demand in the seaborne market," Ndlovu said. "I expect supply discipline to continue going forward." The miner said average realised thermal coal export prices in South Africa and Australia declined by 11% and 10%, respectively, in the first half of 2025. Thungela still expects to produce 12.8 million to 13.6 million metric tons of thermal coal from South Africa this year, and between 3.7 million and 4.1 million metric tons from its Ensham mine in Australia. European stocks, US dollar drift as traders eye Ukraine talks
SYDNEY, Aug 18 (Reuters) - European shares and the U.S. dollar wobbled on Monday ahead of what is likely to be an eventful week for U.S. interest rate policy, while oil prices were subdued as risks to Russian supplies seemed to fade somewhat. The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX), opens new tab was little changed in early trading after hitting its highest level since March on Friday, while the MSCI All Country World Index (.MIWD00000PUS), opens new tab hovered close to the record high touched last week.
