Common Side Effects has been renewed for a second season by Adult Swim
Mushroom fans rejoice. Adult Swim has ordered a second season of its animated hit Common Side Effects. This is happening just ahead of the finale of the first season, which airs this weekend.
For the uninitiated, Common Side Effects is something of an odd duck. It's a cartoon, but it's more of a thriller than a comedy. Mike Judge (Silicon Valley, King of the Hill) and Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation) are onboard as executive producers, so there are some jokes. I guess it could be called a dramedy, but comedic thriller seems more apt.
The plot follows two former high school lab partners who discover a mystical mushroom that can cure just about every disease. This forces them to go on the run from the DEA, big pharma and shadowy business entities. The animation style is certainly unique, and may not be for everyone, but the show really comes into its own after a few episodes.
The voice cast includes Mike Judge, who played both Beavis and Butt-Head, and Martha Kelly, who starred in the animated Carol & the End of the World. She's also fantastic in Baskets and absolutely terrifying in the second season of Euphoria. The remaining cast includes Joseph Lee Anderson, Dave King and Emily Pendergast.
Along with the renewal announcement, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen called the show a 'boundary-pushing and genre-defining piece of television.' He also praised fans for 'lighting up socials to spread the word.'
Common Side Effects was created by Steve Hely, who wrote for American Dad and 30 Rock, and Joe Bennett, who made the criminally underrated (and now cancelled) Scavenger's Reign. The pair said their goal for the show is 'to transform planet Earth and restore the human spirit' but that they'll 'settle for a second season.'

(NewsNation) — The drama between 'It Ends With Us' co-stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni has taken a surprising new turn, as a court filing shows some claims against Baldoni have been withdrawn. On Monday, the actress filed to dismiss her original claims of emotional distress. On Tuesday, Judge Lewis Liman, who is overseeing the lawsuit, ruled that those claims would not remain active. It was Lively's claims of emotional distress that led to Baldoni's lawyers requesting her medical information. This included therapy notes and information on her mental health providers. Following the ruling, Lively's attorneys will be unable to use evidence of her alleged emotional distress in her case. Baldoni's attorneys declined to comment on this ruling, according to Variety. Lively's lawyers have said Baldoni's lawyers' requesting her medical information is a 'press stunt' and filed their own motion urging the court to sanction attorneys for Baldoni, saying they abused the docket. 'It is based on two brazenly false assertions. First, they claim that Ms. Lively has 'refused' to disclose medical and mental health information, but as counsel for the Wayfarer Parties concede, that information is relevant only to Ms. Lively's stand-alone tort-based emotional distress claims that she indicated she was withdrawing,' the Lively filing argued. As these legal battles continue, it was announced that Baldoni's foundation, Wayfarer Foundation, would be closing. Baldoni co-owned the foundation with producing partner Steve Sarowitz. Sarowitz announced the closing on Instagram, saying, 'Upon unanimous decision of the board of directors, today (May 2) we will begin the process of sunsetting the Foundation. We will honor all of our current grant commitments as we carefully wind down operations over the next several weeks.' Baldoni had been a board member of the foundation since 2016. All of this comes after Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni for alleged sexual harassment. One insider told NewsNation in February that Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, 'have no idea what's coming down the pike.' 'King of the Hill' voice actor fatally shot: Reports Another source told NewsNation in February that no one wanted to work with Lively since the lawsuits started. Then, Baldoni filed a suit that claimed he had to deal with being defamed and alleged extortion attempts. He had also filed a libel suit against The New York Times before it was paused in March. Jonathan Joss Shooting Suspect Utters Three Words Upon Arrest
New details have emerged in the tragic killing of actor , best known for his roles in "King of the Hill" and "Parks and Recreation," including a three-word confession cops say was made by the suspect at the scene. Joss died on Sunday, June 1, in San Antonio, Texas, following what is being described as an altercation with his neighbor, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja. Now, the San Antonio Police Department report has been released, and it details more information about the deadly encounter. According to a police report obtained by the Daily Mail, Ceja was arrested shortly after the shooting and allegedly told officers, 'I shot him,' as he was being detained. He has since been booked on suspicion of murder and is currently being held on a $200,000 bond. A witness told officers she had driven Joss from Austin to his San Antonio property, damaged in a recent fire, around 7 p.m. so he could check his mail. According to her account, she parked in the driveway while Joss and another individual, reportedly his husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales, got out of the vehicle. Shortly after, the witness said Ceja pulled up behind her car with a passenger. In her rearview mirror, she claims she saw Ceja and Joss exchange heated words, during which Ceja allegedly threatened, 'he had a gun and would shoot [Joss].' Moments later, she said Ceja opened fire. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Joss was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 7:20 p.m. According to the report, police seized Ceja's weapon and noted he 'intentionally and knowingly discharged a weapon at [Joss], resulting in his death.' Joss's husband, Tristan, has publicly stated he believes the killing was motivated by homophobia, claiming they have been "harassed" for two years by "openly homophobic" individuals. "When we returned to the site to check our mail, we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress," Tristan recalled on Facebook. "While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired. Jonathan and I had no weapons." However, the San Antonio Police Department released a statement dismissing that theory at this time. "Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation," they said. "SAPD investigators handle these allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly." One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, spoke with MySA, claiming the actor "wasn't a good neighbor" and he would "always do erratic things in the street." Isabel Caballero, who's lived on the block since 2021, claims Joss "would just walk up and down the street" and "he would just like scream." "But we knew how he was, so we wouldn't disturb him," she added. "Even if he looked at us, talked mess to us, we just ignored him because we knew that's how he was." 'King of the Hill' actor Jonathan Joss had fallen on hard times and appeared to be financially struggling in the weeks before his murder, heartbreaking social media posts show. Joss — who portrayed John Redcorn on the cartoon comedy — had been in Austin over the weekend for a event he apparently organized offering a 'Q&A session and a meet & greet' with him, and also the chance to buy autographed photos at three-for-$25, according to the San Antonio Express News. 'When I was 36 I didn't need crap like this,' the 59-year-old said in a video as he rode a Greyhound bus to the Austin event. 'But now that I'm almost 60 I gotta get money.' Despite the tragic picture of Joss' last days, actors who worked with him over the years mourned his loss and recalled the joy of working with him. 'The cast has been texting together about it all day and we're just heartbroken,' said Nick Offerman, who worked alongside Joss on 'Parks and Recreation' for five years. 'Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy,' Offerman told PEOPLE.
