DCR partners with local LGBTQ+ organizations to host Pride Hikes in Mass.
BOSTON (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hosting free guided Pride Hikes throughout the state this month in recognition of the LGBTQ+ community.
In celebration of Pride Month, DCR plans to lead a series of hikes in collaboration with local and regional LGBTQ+ organizations, including several in western Mass. such as the Stonewall Center at UMass Amherst and Queer Men of the Berkshires (Q-MoB).
Where to celebrate Pride Month in western Massachusetts
'At DCR, we are focused year-round on ensuring that all of our residents and visitors have access to and feel welcome and safe in our parks and on our trails – spaces that are essential for our overall well-being,' said DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo. 'These Pride Hikes are opportunities for our LGBTQ+ friends and their loved ones to safely and peacefully come together and explore the beauty of our state parks. We are grateful to our partner organizations for joining us in this effort and hope that these hikes inspire some new DCR park enthusiasts.'
DCR encourages participants of Pride Hikes to wear pride colors and sturdy shoes for walking. Bug spray, sunscreen, and water are also recommended.
Pride Hikes will be held at the following properties:
Wompatuck State Park, Hingham: June 14, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Wachusett Reservoir, West Boylston: June 14, 7:30 p.m. – 9:15 p.m.
Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, Adams: June 15, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, East Falmouth: June 19, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park, Uxbridge: June 27, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Great Falls Discovery Center, Turners Falls: June 28, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Middlesex Fells, Stoneham: June 29, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
The department plans to continue hosting Pride Hikes at agency parks throughout Massachusetts beyond the month of June. For more information on these events and other DCR programs, visit mass.gov.

Rockford celebrates Pride Month with second annual parade and afterparty
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford kicked off Pride Month with the city's second annual Pride Parade, along with multiple different activities going on around the area. The parade started at East State and Third Street before crossing the Rock River. The hour-long parade ended at Wyman Street. The streets were filled with community allies and supporters. The parade crowd turned its attention to an afterparty put on by multiple vendors and organizations that are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Co-Owners of The Office Niteclub said they are proud of the growth they have seen regarding support and attendance. 'Just to look out here and see all the allies, families, friends, neighbors, loved ones, to see how much it's grown since we started this, it's a beautiful thing to see,' said The Office Owner, Kyra Carpenter. 'We couldn't be more happy. more proud.' The owners feel the event would not come to fruition without the community chipping in. 'Without our sponsors and our volunteers and our staff, this would be impossible,' said The Office Owner, Brian Finn. 'It's still a feat, but they help so much, as well as the city being so supportive with everything, it's a great feeling.' Springfield Family Expo provides student support resources
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Public Schools spent the day on Saturday celebrating the power of community. The third annual Family Expo was held by Springfield Public Schools inside the MassMutual Center. The second floor was filled with over 100 organizations, with live entertainment and artwork from the students in the district. Golf tournament raises funds for new veterans monument in Springfield This fun-filled event was to help families understand what resources are out there to support them, such as early literacy, middle school transition, college and career readiness, or post-secondary success. This year's theme, 'Believe in the Power of CommUNITY,' was inspired by the superintendent of Springfield Public Schools. 'It's believing in our students and the capabilities that they have, believing in our families, believing in our community,' said Assistant Superintendent Jose Escribano. 'And just the opportunity when all of us come together, we can accomplish great things. But we just have to believe that we can all come together to do that.' Every family also got the chance to complete exit surveys to give feedback about the event and the district. Those surveys led to raffle prizes like PlayStations and grills. Flags half-staff to honor Massachusetts airman killed during World War II
BOSTON (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday. The order was issued to honor Staff Sergeant Loring E. Lord of Somerville, who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces 642d Bombardment Squadron, 409th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Division, 9th Air Force, during World War II. Lord was a gunner aboard an A-26B 'Invader', when his aircraft was hit by heavy anti-aircraft fire during a bombardment mission to Germany in March 1945. WWII bomber crash left 11 dead and 'non-recoverable.' 4 are finally coming home Those aboard the aircraft were buried in a cemetery in Germany. The remains were later discovered in 2018 and taken to a laboratory for analysis and identification. Lord's remains were identified in September 2024, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Loring was born in Somerville in 1916 and enlisted in the Army Air Forces during World War II. His remains were returned to Massachusetts on May 29th. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. American flags and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flags are ordered to be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday in his honor.
