Yes, Even Steam Can Straighten Your Hair—Here Are the Best Tools Experts Love

Elle05-06-2025
While traditional hair straighteners can have salon-quality effects on your hairstyle du jour—think sleek texture, enviable gleam, and tamed flyaways—the hot tools are not always beneficial for hair health, especially when it comes to maintaining moisture. What if we told you there was a one-step fix to straightening your hair while keeping moisture intact? Enter the best steam hair straighteners, which offer all the aforementioned perks without zapping the hair of moisture.
'Steam allows for a gentler, more hydrating straightening process compared to traditional dry heat,' says Min Kim, a celebrity colorist and the US and global ambassador of L'Oréal Professionnel. 'The water vapor in steam helps maintain the hair's internal moisture levels while smoothing the cuticle. This results in less breakage, reduced frizz, and a shinier, more polished finish.'
Kim particularly recommends a steam hair straightener for anyone with frizz-prone, textured, dry, or color-treated hair. 'It's also fantastic for smoothing high-porosity hair and maintaining softness in blonde or sensitized hair that typically loses elasticity from too much heat exposure,' she says. When selecting a steam hair straightener for at-home styling, Kim recommends looking for models that support consistent steam output and have adjustable settings. She also notes that straightening tools with high-quality ceramic or anodized plates will pay off for long-term hair health. In short: 'You want a device that not only straightens, but also nourishes and protects the hair in the process.'
Which tool deserves your trust? Ahead, browse our guide to the steam straighteners that earn the highest praise from industry pros and savvy home stylists alike.
'The L'Oréal Professionnel Steampod is an excellent example of steam technology in action,' Kim says. 'It uses continuous steam to straighten or style the hair while preserving softness and integrity.' As a plus, the coveted tool does more than just straighten the hair. Edgar Parra, a senior stylist at Benjamin New York, says that 'it's a great investment [because] clients can easily curl and straighten their hair with it for versatile styles.'

With an impressive six heat settings to choose from, which range from 300 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, Hot Tools' steam straightener gets a stamp of approval from Turnbull. It's a steam-optional device, has steam-control settings ranging from high to low, and can also put out continuous or intermittent steam. What's more, it can help create straight, wavy, and curly looks.

An Amazon reviewer says: 'I have always wanted to be able to straighten my hair with ease, but it always took me like 45 min to get my hair straight. With this steam styler, it takes me no time and my hair is shiny and straight for days! I'm obsessed!'
'Steam heat drives moisture deeper into the hair fiber while straightening, helping to maintain hydration and elasticity—two things traditional flat irons often take away,' Turnbull says. 'It's gentler on the cuticle and lowers the risk of breakage. Instead of drying the hair out, steam supports the hair's natural moisture balance.' She likens the process to ironing clothes, noting that linens and cotton smooth out better with steam. 'Hair reacts the same way,' she says.
'As with any heat tool, overuse or improper technique can lead to damage, especially if you're not protecting the hair,' Kim says. That said, she notes that the best steam hair straighteners are thoughtfully designed to reduce the risk of hair damage compared to traditional flat irons. 'The key is using a steam straightener on tangle-free, dry hair, and avoiding high heat on compromised or overly porous strands,' she says. It's also important to manage expectations. 'Steam alone just doesn't give the same results as a traditional flatiron,' says Vanessa Ocando, a celebrity hairstylist in New York City. 'If your hair already has a soft wave and you're just trying to tame frizz or get a bit more polish, they can work really well.' In short, she says: 'I wouldn't reach for one if I wanted super sleek hair, but it's great for someone who wants a natural finish with movement, not a flat, pressed look.'
'Steam straighteners are a godsend for those with thick, coarse, curly, or dehydrated hair types and textures,' Turnbull says. 'They're also a perfect match for color-treated or chemically processed hair, as they smooth without aggressively dehydrating. If your hair tends to need more moisture, is frizzy or dull, a steam straightener could be your new best friend.'
When it comes to steam styling, 'Preparation is key to maximizing both results and protection,' Kim says. She reiterates that starting with clean, dehydrated hair is always best, as steam straighteners work best on dry strands. 'Use a lightweight heat protectant that complements steam technology and gently detangle hair before styling to prevent unnecessary tension,' she says. 'Additionally, sectioning the hair and working in small, even pieces also allows for a smoother, longer-lasting finish.'
'Go for a steam straightener with adjustable heat settings and a steady, diffused steam output,' Ocando says. 'Ceramic or tourmaline plates help keep things smooth and even.' She adds that if the straightener comes with a comb attachment, that's all the better. 'It helps guide the hair as you pass through while adding some tension to smooth out waves,' she says. Finally, when considering which steam straightener to buy, 'Keep in mind that steam straighteners are more about soft styling and frizz control than sleek, pin-straight hair,' Ocando says. 'They're perfect if you like a more relaxed, touchable finish.'

Summer Goth, Pucci Princess, Beachside Birkin: The Unhinged Anatomy of Celebrity Vacation Style

What does Euro Summer mean to you? It could mean slipping on a tomato red sundress or a scarf over your pants and some added toe rings for flitting around Puglia, getting the same TikTok at the gelato stand or church step as everyone else on the FYP. Or, perhaps you're adding a hair kerchief to your flicky little bob to bop around Paris, sweating in line for croissant pistache and going mad at Google Maps because every bistro is closed for the holidays. Maybe, you're Greek island-hopping, ensconced mostly in bathrobes on a yacht, emerging to hit up Mykonos's clubstaurants in teeny bandage dresses that you might spill some late-night gyros on later. Maybe it's all internet slop that's flattening an entire continent and multitude of cultures into TikTok Shop buys—but I digress. In celebrity-land, summer 2025 has centered on the beach. Their job, for now, is beach. For Hailey Bieber, that meant taking over a Mallorcan beach club to celebrate her latest, lemon-inspired Rhode launch. Kylie and Kendall Jenner left behind the fug of Venice—and their archival Tom Ford gowns and Chanel sets—to frolic in the surf of Saint-Tropez. Jenna Ortega hasn't let the Wednesday press tour and her gothic wardrobe stop her from paddling on Bondi Beach in full Matrix mode either. Ibiza has also been a celeb-favorite setting, with Alaïa mesh flat-footed Dakota Johnson and Margot Robbie making sure to stop by the exclusive Jondal for a platter of langoustines and to serve some more hit-making looks with summer's most wanted pieces. Kate Moss arrived peak season on the Balearic island, without the chance to swap out her Birkin bag for a more beach-appropriate tote—no matter. Dua Lipa, of course, is maximizing her endless vacation and birthday celebrations. With an ever-expanding list of destinations and ever-more unhinged celebrity beachside style combos to digest, grab an Aperol Spritz and ponder what your celebrity vacation style of choice has to say. A presto! Kate Moss and her sandy beachside Birkin

A bamboo wind chime that'll create calming, gentle tones on top of nature's natural music. You'll forget you're in your own backyard as you let its soft chimes transport you into deep relaxation. A stand-up weed-puller tool if the only thing keeping you from relaxing is the weeds that have overtaken your yard. This weeder makes it easy to rip out the weeds right by the root without throwing out your back in the process. Just place, tilt, and watch your backyard transform. A bottle of grass seed to fluff up your grass that your dog has so kindly marked their territory all over. Take back your yard by sprinkling this mixture of soil, seed, and mulch all over the problem areas. Now you can lay out or have that picnic without the annoying, prickly dead grass. A bamboo fountain that'll transform your backyard into a 5-star resort spa. The sounds of the trickling water will have you feeling zen and relaxed after another "stressful" day of TikTok scrolling. An outdoor storage shed so you can put away all the things that remind you of the gardening that needs to be done. Out of sight, out of mind. A power wash for when you're trying to wind down in your can't stop glaring at your grimy fence (vibe killer). Blast away all that nasty mildew for a patio that's less haunting and more relaxing. A pack of natural reed fencing that'll create some privacy while also letting you pretend you're at a tropical hideaway bar. Now you can stop feeling like you're being watched by your neighbor's dog when you're trying to tan and sip. Or an artificial ivy privacy screen if greenery is more your vibe and you want to feel like you're in your own private greenhouse. Tip: You can also drape it over a pergola to block out a bit of that burning sun so you *and* your margarita don't melt so quickly. A pack of waterproof, shatterproof outdoor string lights that'll bring the perfect ambiance to any backyard hangout — you'll want to lay out on a lawn chair and take in the starry night with this dreamy lighting all around you. A pack of solar lights you can stake around your garden to illuminate your flower beds and give a clear walking path so no one squashes your petunias. And a bundle of solar bubble lights for a dreamy garden aesthetic that'll make you feel like there are fairies and fireflies living in your flowers. A butterfly solar lantern that'll project enchanting patterns all over your patio or garden. It soaks up sunlight during the day and transforms your space into a mesmerizing, glowing wonderland at night. A smokeless firepit designed to produce lasting fires without covering you in a ball of smoke. It's perfect for bonfires that include roasting marshmallows and late-night chats around the fire, or just some much-needed alone time.

The best place to wear blusher for your face shape, according to a makeup artist

Blush is hands-down my favorite makeup product. When I don't feel like putting on a full face of bronzer and contour, I'll never skip blush — it brightens, lifts, and adds luminosity to any look. And the key to flushed cheeks isn't about how much blush you use, it's actually all about where you put it. Blush has the power to enhance and accentuate your features in subtle ways. While you can wear it however you like, the most flattering, lifted effect often comes down to your unique bone structure and placement. So, no matter your face shape, there's a blush technique out there to lift and let your rosy cheeks pop. I even got exclusive insight from Sofia Tilbury, makeup artist and Global Artistry Director at Charlotte Tilbury (yes, member of that iconic beauty empire — she's Charlotte Tilbury's niece), who shared her blush application tips with me. 'There are so many ways to use blush to enhance the look of your face shape,' she says. Find the best blush placement for your face shape, plus blush inspo, below. 'For oval-shaped faces, you want to add softness and romance through the cheeks,' explains Tilbury. 'So, I like to apply blush onto the apples of the cheeks to accentuate them and balance out the length of the face.' You can also add a bit across the tip of the nose for a full sun-kissed look. If you have a heart-shaped face, don't be afraid to bring that blush above the cheeks. 'Try applying blush onto the apples of the cheeks, starting slightly lower, then follow a curved, C-shaped motion along the cheekbones and up towards the temples,' Tilbury recommends. 'With a round face, I like to place blush slightly higher on the cheeks to help add definition to facial features,' Tilbury explains. 'In line with the outer corners of the eyes, sweep your blush onto the tops of the cheekbones to create a soft lift effect that helps bring the appearance of structure to the face.' This will help elongate round face shapes and give you a more lifted look. 'For square-shaped faces, it's best to focus your blush on the apples of the cheeks to make them appear rounder," says Tilbury. "Apply in circular motions before lightly sweeping outwards towards the ears to get a seamless blend." Jasmine Hyman is the assistant beauty editor at Cosmopolitan, where she writes about all the best makeup products and trends. As a blush-obsessed beauty editor, she wanted to find the best blush placement for each face shape, so she tapped MUA Sofia Tilbury and spent hours finding the best blush inspo. Her most prized beauty possessions are a meticulous skincare routine and salon blowouts.
