Rusk on Fernandes, dignity and Man City
Southampton interim boss Simon Rusk has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City (kick-off 15:00 BST).Here are the key lines from his news conference:Rusk hopes to have everyone available for the game and said his squad has a "fairly clean bill of health".On Mateus Fernandes' availability after he was substituted against Leicester City: "He's recovered from last week [against Leicester] and he's trained well this week and hopefully he can put a good performance in for us on Saturday."Asked about the defeat at King Power, Rusk said "it was a sore one" but that he wanted his side to "lick their wounds and get ready for the next one".On whether there will be changes to his team: "When you get a bad result like that, there's a lot of work that feels undone and so we have to do the work again. We can't be victims and feel sorry for ourselves. My message to the players was that all we can do is take care of our actions. There are lots of reasons as to why you arrive at a starting XI but what I did say to the players was: 'Be at it'."Rusk said that he wants to "finish the season on a high and build momentum": "[It's a chance] to end the season with as much dignity as possible."On Manchester City: "What we are facing is the greatest team and greatest manager for nine or 10 years now. By their standards, they'll be disappointed that they haven't been in and around the title but when you look at their capabilities, you know we are going to be tested.Rusk added that: "It's important we don't move in to fear territory in these games and instead we put our best foot forward."Follow all of the day's football news on our dedicated live pageFull commentary of Southampton v Manchester City from 15:00 BST on BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday

Man City's words to Jeremie Frimpong which made him realise he had to quit club
Jeremie Frimpong has returned to English football after Liverpool triggered his release clause at Bayer Leverkusen, six years after he left Manchester City Jeremie Frimpong has opened up about his exit from Manchester City, revealing that the club's lack of faith in his abilities led him to seek pastures new. The 24-year-old became Liverpool 's first summer signing on Friday after the newly-crowned Premier League champions activated his £29.6million (€35m) release clause, snatching him from Bayer Leverkusen. The Dutch international is making a comeback to English football six years after he left City's academy, where he had been honing his skills since the tender age of 10. Despite climbing the ranks to the under-23 level, Frimpong never got the chance to shine for City's first team. His nearly decade-long journey with City reached a crossroads during contract talks in 2019. In an early 2024 interview with SportBible, the Bundesliga title winner shared that it was City's blunt assessment of his prospects for first-team football that convinced him to move on. "I kept playing [an age group] down and I think when I was under-23's at City, I remember going in for a new contract and that's when I knew my path at City was different," Frimpong recounted. "They were talking about how I couldn't get into the team and were comparing me to other players in the academy that were doing better than me. I thought: 'Yeah, I clearly don't have a future here' so I've got to take a different step," reports the Liverpool Echo. "I remember going to that meeting and he was saying: 'You're too small,' and it'll be too physical. That's when I was thinking: 'Oh s***, where am I gonna go?'" Fast forward, and Frimpong has silenced his doubters, winning league honours with Celtic and Leverkusen, and becoming a staple for the Netherlands national team. With his move to Liverpool, Frimpong is now part of a sizeable Dutch contingent, which includes Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, and manager Arne Slot. Unlike his past experience at City, Frimpong revealed that Slot has been nothing but supportive, fuelling his confidence. "I spoke to the manager a few times," he told LFCTV. "He sounds very positive. He says I can bring a lot of energy and my qualities, my speed. "Especially when a manager is talking positively about you, it gives you very good confidence that he believes in you. I've had good conversations with him. "I'm really excited [to work with Arne Slot]. Even when I was at [the] national team, some of the Feyenoord boys would tell me about him and be like: 'He's the best coach I've ever had.' "Things like this. So, I've always heard good things about the coach. Now he's going to be my coach, so I'm excited for that."

Mikel Arteta told Arsenal have already made huge transfer mistake
Mikel Arteta has been warned Arsenal have already made their first transfer mistake of the summer. The summer transfer window officially opened on June 1 to allow clubs competing in the upcoming Club World Cup to sign players before the tournament begins. It will shut again on June 10 before reopening on June 16 through to September 1 for Premier League clubs. Arteta and Arsenal face a crucial transfer window after going a fifth successive season without a trophy. The Gunners were unable to keep pace with Premier League champions Liverpool, finishing second for the third season in a row, while they were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by eventual winners PSG. Arteta wants to sign several players this summer to take his team to the next level, starting with a new striker and central midfielder. Martin Zubimendi looks set to arrive at the Emirates Stadium in a £51m deal from Real Sociedad but Arsenal's striker search is still ongoing. Talks have been held over deals for Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, while Arsenal were linked with Liam Delap before the Ipswich Town forward agreed to join Chelsea. Due to a reasonable release clause, Chelsea will pay just £30m to welcome Delap to Stamford Bridge and Arsenal have been told they made a major mistake not beating their London rivals to a deal. 'I don't understand how Arsenal didn't snap him up,' ex-EFL striker Adebayo Akinfenwa told talkSPORT. 'I don't understand how, when you need a striker and you're looking at the transfer market, £30m is chump change in today's market. 'So when you've got somebody who, you're talking about potential, they're talking about being a Harry Kane replacement for England, about a proper No.9, I don't understand how Arsenal didn't buy. 'As soon as Ipswich got relegated, they should have been in there. I think it's a no-brainer. 'I think he's going to do well. I really do. I remember speaking to him when he was on loan at Stoke from Man City, and even back then, his whole demeanour, his aura, he was self-assured, confident, good stature. 'He's got that old-school element where you know you're in for a game when you're up against Delap. So I think he's going to do well. 'I think he's got that Diego Costa sort of vibe about him, in regards to you're going to know he's there. So I think it's very, very good business. I think £30m for Delap is very good business.' Liam Delap, the son of former Stoke City defender Rory, scored 12 goals in the Premier League last season for an Ipswich side that won just four games. The 22-year-old, who was sold by Manchester City last summer, will compete with current Chelsea first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson. 'People talk about him being signed to be part of the squad, but I think he's bigger than that,' Akinfenwa added. More Trending 'I think he'll be thinking in his head, 'I'm going to be the guy, I'm going to go and play'. He's going to be the main man. 'When you look at it with how many games Chelsea are going to play, he knows he's going to get a lot of game time and it is for him to take his opportunity. 'And then when you've got the calibre of players Chelsea have, he scored goals at Ipswich but how many more goals is he going to score when he's playing with the likes of Cole Palmer and Reece James is putting balls into the box? He and Palmer played together in the youth team at City as well. 'I think it's a good signing. I just don't understand how, and I'll say Arsenal because they're the ones who are front runners for a striker, I don't understand how they weren't pushing for him.'
