President Donald Trump announced Wednesday he would host the upcoming Kennedy Center awards, as he unveiled the honorees at a press conference.
Actor Sylvester Stallone, the rock band KISS, country music legend George Strait and singer Gloria Gaynor were selected as the nominees as well as the British actor Michael Crawford.
The president said he was 'about 98 percent involved' in the selection process.
'I turned down plenty. They were too woke. I had a couple of wokesters,' he said, about the proposed nominees.
The president said he did not want to host the award ceremony, but the new Kennedy Center board insisted - especially his chief of staff Susie Wiles.
Trump said the country was tired of award ceremonies like the Academy Awards because they were too 'woke.'
'Look at the Academy Awards. It gets lousy ratings. Now it's all woke. All they do is talk about how much they hate Trump, but nobody likes that. They don't watch anymore,' he said.
Trump seized control of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after taking office for his second term, appointing himself as the chairman and appointing fourteen new members to the board.
The president was joined by members of the Kennedy Center board appointed by Trump including his White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Senator Lindsey Graham, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Director of Presidential Personnel Sergio Gor and Richard Grenell - the interim executive director of the Kennedy Center.
He praised Stallone, a supporter of his, as one of the best actors of his generation.
'Nobody else could have done what he did. They tried and it didn't work out too well,' he said pointing to the films Rambo and Rocky as monumental achievements.
'I'll never forget I was a young guy and I went to see a thing called 'Rambo,' he recalled. 'I said, "This movie is phenomenal. What the heck." That turned out to be a monster.'
Trump praised Crawford as 'an international sensation' for playing 'one of the greatest roles in the history of Broadway' as the Phantom of the Opera.
'Nobody did it like him,' he said.
Trump described Gaynor as 'one of the most revered singer of the American disco era,' praising her song, 'I Will Survive' as an 'unbelievable song.
'I have heard it, like everyone else here, thousands of times.
And it is one of those few that get better every time you hear it,' he said. 'And no one can sing it like her.'
He revealed that he always wanted a Kennedy award, calling them one of the 'most prestigious' awards in show business.
'Next year we'll honor Trump, okay?' he joked.

Ukraine cause akin to Second World War Allies, Starmer says before Alaska talks

Ukraine is fighting for the same values as the Allies did in the Second World War, Sir Keir Starmer has said ahead of a summit in Alaska that could see an end to the conflict against Russia. The Prime Minister addressed a reception, including veterans, to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, which marked the Allies' defeat of Japan. Speaking in Downing Street, Sir Keir said: 'I sat on this terrace this very morning with President (Volodymyr) Zelensky, who is fighting for the same values as we were fighting for. And so when we say never forget, we must pass on the stories of those who have gone before us.' It came as US President Donald Trump suggested European leaders could be invited to a second meeting if the summit is successful, which could pave the way to peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Mr Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday at the summit which could see the drawing up of peace terms for Ukraine. Mr Trump and Sir Keir have spoken optimistically about a potential ceasefire, including at a virtual meeting of Ukrainian allies on Wednesday. Leaders of the European-led 'coalition of the willing' could then join talks between Mr Trump, Mr Putin and Ukrainian leader Mr Zelensky to end the war. The possibility was raised by Mr Trump in the White House on Thursday, before he flew to Anchorage where he will meet Mr Putin. He said: 'We have a meeting with President (Vladimir) Putin tomorrow, I think it's going to be a good meeting. 'But the more important meeting will be the second meeting that we're having. We're going to have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelensky, myself, and maybe we'll bring some of the European leaders along. Maybe not.' The PA news agency understands that Sir Keir will attend a meeting if he is invited. He has been a central player in the coalition group which also includes French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Mr Trump added: 'I think President Putin will make peace. I think President Zelensky will make peace. We'll see if they can get along. And if they can it will be great.' The head of the British armed forces, Sir Tony Radakin, said the West should not be 'cowed' by Mr Putin and praised the strength of Britain and Nato. Writing in the Telegraph on the anniversary of VJ Day, he said: 'Putin doesn't want a war with Nato because he would lose. So we should not be cowed by his rhetoric or his campaign of sabotage, outrageous as it may be. 'The one weapon that is most needed in our arsenal is confidence. Despite the global instability, Britain is secure at home. Nato is strong. Russia is weak. It is not complacent to point this out.' Sir Keir met Mr Zelensky in Downing Street on Thursday. They both said there was 'strong resolve' for peace in Ukraine. The two leaders embraced as the red carpet was rolled out for Mr Zelensky's arrival in Downing Street, and they later discussed the conflict. They expressed cautious optimism about the prospect of a truce 'as long as Putin takes action to prove he is serious' about ending the war, a Downing Street statement said. In a separate statement, Mr Zelensky said there had been discussions about the security guarantees required to make any deal 'truly durable if the United States succeeds in pressing Russia to stop the killing'. But concerns linger over the prospect of Kyiv being excluded from negotiations over its own future, and pressured to cede territory, after Mr Trump suggested any agreement may need to involve 'swapping of land'.

'The Traitors' is opening its doors to everyday people. Here's how you can join the TV competition

The U.S. version of ' The Traitors ' has brought a group of public figures to a castle in the Scottish Highlands for a game of deceit, with hundreds of thousands of dollars up for grabs. Now, the Emmy award-winning competition will open its doors to everyday people. NBC is now casting for a civilian version of the popular Peacock series, the network announced Thursday. The competition reality series, an American spin-off to its British counterpart, had only cast celebrities for its first three seasons, the last of which aired early this year. The new version will bring a group of everyday people together to play what the host, Alan Cumming, called his 'treacherous game' in a video announcing the public casting. Cumming is set to host the new version as well, with production for the show starting in 2026, according to the network. Those who are interested in participating can apply now on the show's website. The fourth season of the celebrity version is set to launch next year, and a fifth season has already been confirmed. The star-studded cast for season 4, announced in June, includes reality stars from 'Love Island,' 'Big Brother' and 'Survivor.' 'We're thrilled to be working with NBC to open up the experience to a new group of civilian players, whose stories and strategies will make the gameplay even more unpredictable – and, we hope, even more addictive for viewers,' Stephen Lambert, CEO of Studio Lambert, the producers of both the Peacock and NBC versions, said in a statement. The show features a group of contestants who participate in a murder mystery game similar to Clue or Mafia. A subset of the cast are secretly labeled as traitors and must work together to eliminate the other contestants, who are considered faithfuls. On the line is a prize fund worth up to $250,000. If the faithful manage to eliminate all the traitors, then they share the money. But, if a traitor makes it to the end, they take it all. The British version uses the same location and has used civilian contestants from the start. Casting everyday people will allow complete strangers to meet for the first time, a 'unique opportunity' that 'will be an incredible watch,' said Sharon Vuong, the executive vice president of unscripted programming at NBCUniversal Entertainment. "This new version for NBC offers a unique opportunity for the cast and audience to meet each other for the first time and we know it will be incredible to watch,' Vuong said in a statement. The psychological adventure has found reality TV gold, and its third season premiered as the No. 1 unscripted series in the U.S., according to a release by NBC. The show also recently received five Emmy nominations for season three and previously took home two of the awards for season two.
