Yamashita's AIG Women's Open victory marks new high for Japanese golf
Yamashita's cool and composed two-shot triumph at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club made her the fourth Japanese player to win a Major championship in the last two years and the sixth overall, joining Mao Saigo (2025 Chevron Championship), Ayaka Furue (2024 Amundi Evian Championship),Yuka Saso (2024 U.S. Women's Open), Hinako Shibuno (2019 AIG Women's Open) and the pioneering Hisako 'Chako' Higuchi (1977 LPGA Championship).
With Saigo's Chevron Championship victory, Rio Takeda's triumph at the Blue Bay LPGA andChisato Iwai claiming the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba title, Yamashita is the fourthJapanese winner on the 2025 LPGA Tour.
The in-depth strength of women's golf is highlighted by the fact that Yamashita is the tour's ninthRolex First-Time winner of 2025 and the 21st different champion. The 24-year-old is the second player this season to make a Major championship their first victory, following Saigo.
Following the AIG Women's Open, Yamashita overtook Takeda at the top of the 2025 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year rankings. Amazingly, the third and fourth-placed players are also Japanese – Iwai and her twin sister, Akie.
'To have so many Japanese players doing so well at the moment is something that provides motivation for me and keeps me going. So great to see Saigo win earlier this year and that just kind of pushed me a little bit harder. To join that elite group is something that's very special, and it's an amazing feeling,' said Yamashita.

Moraes scores as Selangor hold Asean champions Buriram
KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor started their Asean Club Championship Group A campaign with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Buriram United at the Chang Arena on Wednesday. Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes gave Selangor a 38th-minute lead against his former team before Peter Zulj scored a late equaliser for the Thais in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The Red Giants were expected to struggle against the Thai powerhouse. However, they managed to contain Buriram's attack, a result of Japanese coach Katsuhito Kinoshi's tactical plan. Moraes, 24, had a chance to score in the 25th minute but his shot went wide. However, he made it count in the 38th minute, beating goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom. Buriram almost found an equaliser in the 41st minute but Thanakrit Chotmuangpak's effort went wide, and the first half ended with Selangor holding a one-goal lead. In the second half, Buriram coach Osmar Loss brought on Suphanat Mueanta for Thanakrit and Peter Zulj for Phitiwat Sookjitthammakul to take control of the game. The changes gave Buriram more attacking power, but Selangor goalkeeper Kalamullah Al Hafiz denied them with several fine blocks. However, Zulj headed in the equaliser from a corner kick deep into stoppage time to share the points.

World champions Springboks to play Japan at Wembley
JOHANNESBURG: World champions South Africa will play Japan at Wembley on November 1 the first time they have met in England since the Japanese recorded one of the greatest upsets in Rugby World Cup history in 2015. Japan, then as now coached by Eddie Jones, overcame the Springboks 34-32 in an absolute thriller of a match in Brighton. South Africa have gone on to beat the 'Brave Blossoms' twice since then, both times in Japan, as well as being crowned world champions in 2019 and 2023 giving them a record four victories in the sport's quadrennial showpiece. Jones, who in between his stints as Japan handler had a rollercoaster spell with England losing to the 'Boks in the 2019 World Cup final but was fired in late 2022, said the 'Miracle of Brighton' had been a game changer for the sport. "The game in Brighton 10 years ago changed rugby in Japan from being a minor sport to a boom sport," said Jones. "Playing against the Boks is the dream of every young Japanese player." His Springbok counterpart Rassie Erasmus said it was a most welcome challenge ahead of their traditional November clashes with northern hemisphere heavyweights. "We are delighted to be starting off our tour of the Northern Hemisphere with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium," said Erasmus in a South Africa Rugby statement. "Especially ahead of a challenging tour which kicks off a week later with the first official Test of the November window against France in Paris. "The Brave Blossoms are renowned for playing fast, attacking, high-tempo rugby – which has been prevalent in our last two encounters, before and during the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019." Wembley has hosted 11 rugby matches over the years, starting with England's 26-13 win over Canada in 1992. Wales hosted six games there, including their Five Nations matches in 1998 and 1999, while the old Cardiff Arms Park was being rebuilt. A revamped Wembley also featured a couple of games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, though both lacked the drama of the Japan and Boks pool match. The last time the Boks played at Wembley was a 31-31 against the Barbarians draw in 2016.
