Kolkata: Do not repeat last years mistakes: Cops were told on Wednesday as they checked the security preparedness for the Nabanna Abhijan, slated for Aug 9, demanding justice for the RG Kar rape-and-murder victim.
A similar march last year had led to widespread violence, including multiple injuries to police personnel.
Lalbazar said it analysed CCTV footage from Aug 27 last year and found several cops, who were injured, were targeted as they were "left to fend for themselves". "Those instances took place as police were instigated and got scattered while chasing protesters," said an officer. A policeman was hit in the eye while travelling by an SUV.
Another cop was pushed and shoved out of a tea shop where he was left alone. To prevent a repetition of such a scenem Lalbazar has decided that cops will always move in a formation on that day.
Police will also work on setting up barricades—big and small—at strategic points to ensure stray attacks do not take place. Every cop on duty, especially those deployed close to barricades, will sport proper safety gear. Senior officers are likely to hold meetings across commissionerates to take stock of the situation.

Police pointed out the resurfacing of last year's videos and audio clips, urging citizens to join the RG Kar protest march to Nabanna, indicated plans to try and take cops by surprise, preferably in small groups. This year's protest has found support from several politicians.
For details on the protest, police are monitoring social media and checking some organisers' background. An audit of the area near Nabanna is on.

‘Cowardly attempt on our resolve': Delhi CM Rekha Gupta in first response after attack

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday described the attack on her during a public hearing at her Civil Lines residence as a 'cowardly attempt' to weaken her commitment to serve the people, while assuring that such incidents will not deter her. 'The attack on me during this morning's public hearing was not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi and work for the welfare of the people,' Gupta said in a statement. She added that though she was initially in shock, she was now feeling better and urged supporters not to crowd her residence. 'I request all my well-wishers not to trouble themselves by coming to meet me. I will soon be seen working among you again,' she said, asserting that she would continue public hearings with the same seriousness and commitment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like People Born 1945-1985 Could Apply For This Benefit yourseniorsaving Undo — gupta_rekha (@gupta_rekha) Gupta also expressed gratitude for the 'immense love, blessings, and good wishes' she received after the incident, vowing to return to her duties 'with even more energy and dedication than before.' Live Events According to PTI, the 35-year-old accused, identified as Rajesh Khimji from Rajkot, Gujarat, first handed some papers to Gupta during the Jan Sunvai and then allegedly attacked her. He was overpowered on the spot and taken into custody at Civil Lines police station . Police are verifying his identity and address. Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva, who met Gupta after the incident, said her condition is stable. 'The CM is strong. It seems she suffered a light blow to her head… The slap or stone-throwing stories are fabricated. Such incidents in politics are condemnable. Jan Sunvai will continue,' he told reporters. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav also condemned the attack, saying it highlighted broader concerns over women's safety. 'If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or common woman be safe?' he asked. The weekly Jan Sunvai allows citizens to directly present their grievances to the Chief Minister, and Gupta has said the programme will continue uninterrupted.

Her office described it as part of a "well-planned conspiracy to kill her". Police officials said the assault was serious and could have been life-threatening. The accused, 41-year-old Sakariya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai from Rajkot, Gujarat, has a criminal record and was previously booked in five cases, including a knife attack, police said. He was detained immediately and is currently being interrogated at Civil Lines police station. Delhi Police have registered an FIR under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (assault on a public servant), and 221 (obstruction of public servant). Authorities said Sakariya arrived in Delhi two days prior, carrying out reconnaissance near the CM's residence and her camp office. CCTV footage captured him in the area, and his mobile phone, seized by police, reportedly contains videos of previous public hearings. Security measures for CM Gupta, currently under 'Z' category protection, may be reviewed by the ministry of home affairs following the investigation. Sakariya's mother, Bhanuben Sakariya, claimed her son is apolitical and had traveled to Delhi to protest a Supreme Court order on stray dogs, describing him as someone who 'loves dogs, cows and birds.' Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said further investigation is underway, with the Special Cell of Delhi Police involved.

Hefty loans sanctioned on inflated property valuation in Andaman Co-op Bank scam: Police

Investigation into the Andaman and Nicobar State Cooperative Bank Ltd (ANSCBL) loan irregularities case involving Congress leader and former MP Kuldeep Rai Sharma has revealed that hefty loans in crores "were sanctioned with insufficient security coverage", a senior police officer said. The ANSCBL policy mandates that at least 150 per cent of the loan amount must be secured through collateral. However, it was found that in many cases, hefty loans were sanctioned with insufficient security coverage, exposing the bank to higher financial risk, the officer said. Probe revealed several instances of manipulation in property valuation certificates, and in a few cases, the role of Tehsildar is also under scanner, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? Sit Down Before You See What He Looks Like Now 33 Bridges "As per the bank policy, the lower valuation between the Tehsildar's report and that of the private assessor when sanctioning loans should be considered. But in many cases, forged higher valuation was considered while disbursing loans. This resulted in serious breach of policy and exposing the bank to a high-risk default," the senior officer said. He further said, "It was also found that several original documents, including title deeds and mortgage agreements, were found missing from loan files, raising concerns about document handling and security protocols within the bank". Live Events As per the Enforcement Directorate, more than Rs 500 crore was fraudulently obtained through more than 100 loan accounts from the bank. On July 30, a team of ED officers from Kolkata arrived in Port Blair and on July 31, they visited the ANSCBL office at Maulana Azad Road and Sharma's house at Junglighat in Port Blair and examined various people. They seized important data related to bank loan irregularity cases, an official said. Sharma was the Congress Andaman MP from 2019 to 2024. They also searched houses and offices of a few Port Blair traders/businessmen and former employees of ANSCBL, including ANSCBL managing director K Murugan. On May 15, an FIR was lodged against Sharma in connection with loan irregularities in ANSCBL. Apart from Sharma, others named in the FIR include the cooperative bank's former chairman, board members and directors/officials of the bank and several beneficiaries. On July 18, the CID arrested the former MP in connection with the ANSCBL loan irregularities case. Sharma, who formerly served as the chairman of ANSCBL, was arrested from a private hospital in Port Blair where he was admitted due to health issues. Police had received a complaint from the deputy registrar of the cooperative societies (HQs), which alleged gross irregularities in sanctioning loans to various people by the lender. Since June 25, eight people have been arrested in connection with the scam, including ANSCBL managing director K Murugan, bank employee Kalaivanan, and six others. PTI
