Good Bye B-2, Hello B-21: World's First Sixth-Gen Super Bomber Ready – Who's In Its Crosshairs?
Major General Jason Armagost, head of the Eighth Air Force, spoke about the transition during a webinar hosted by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. His command oversees the current fleet of B-2, B-1 and B-52 bombers.
He said the B-21 will give the Air Force a campaign-ready strike force capable of deploying multiple classes of weapons and carrying out missions across continents at the same time.
Northrop Grumman, the developer of the Raider, describes the aircraft as the world's first true sixth-generation bomber. The Air Force plans to acquire a good number of units, signalling the scale of the programme.
A New Era in American Strike Capability
The B-52 and B-1 bombers entered service in the 1990s. The B-2 Spirit soon took the lead as the most advanced stealth platform in the world. The fleet remained small; only 21 aircraft were ever built. One was lost in a crash, while another has been grounded.
Maintenance costs also remain extremely high. These limits drove U.S. planners to fast-track the B-21 Raider.
The B-21 is still in testing phase. Its design resembles the B-2's flying wing, though it carries major upgrades. The air inlets are recessed to evade radar detection. The 2-D exhaust system suppresses heat emissions and makes infrared tracking difficult.
The aircraft is equipped with advanced radar, electronic warfare systems and intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) technology. It also features a long strike range, allowing operations across vast areas without mid-air refueling.
The Raider's open-system architecture will allow easy integration of new weapons and future technologies, giving it an edge in adaptability.
U.S. Strategy for the B-21
Reports suggest that the Air Force aims to add at least 100 B-21 bombers to its fleet. Analysts warn this may fall short. When the B-2 was conceived, the target was 132 units, though only 21 were completed. The limited production pushed costs above $2 billion per aircraft. A similar shortfall in B-21 procurement could again raise the price per plane to extreme levels.
Senior U.S. commanders have advised a much larger fleet, with some recommending more than 200 units. Their reasoning is to ensure the United States can project airpower simultaneously across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The calls for expansion have grown louder with the possibility of confrontation with China in mind.

ESI court quashes ESIC demand, orders refund of Rs 6.56 lakh with 6% interest to manpower agency
In a major relief to a city-based manpower agency, the ESI court has set aside orders of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and directed its Regional Director in Chandigarh to refund Rs 6,56,318 along with 6% interest to M/s B & J Labour Consultants. The verdict, delivered by Rahul Garg, Civil Judge (Sr. Division), ESI Court, quashed ESIC's earlier orders, dated February 22, 2018, and May 8, 2018, which had directed the firm to deposit Rs 9,65,378 as ESI contribution for manpower deployed in a non-implemented area from April 2013 to March 2014. Represented by advocates Jasbir Singh and Karam Singh, the petitioner argued that B & J Labour Consultants is engaged solely in providing manpower to establishments and has been regularly paying ESI contributions wherever applicable. In this case, however, the manpower was supplied to a company located in a non-implemented area, where the ESI Act did not apply. 'The Assessing Officer passed the impugned order in an illegal, arbitrary, unsustainable, and unconstitutional manner under Section 45A of the ESI Act, without properly considering the facts,' counsel for the petitioner submitted. Challenging the demand, the firm had filed ESI Case No. 07 of 2018 before the Chandigarh ESI Court. After hearing both sides, the court ruled in favour of the petitioner, observing that the ESIC orders were unsustainable. 'The petitioner is hereby held entitled to refund of Rs 6,56,318 from the respondents along with interest at 6% from the date of payments till realisation. The orders, dated 22-02-2018 and 08-05-2018, are set aside being illegal and arbitrary,' the court held.

Gold rate today: Yellow metal prices dip Rs 400 to Rs 1,00,020 on stockist selling; silver tumbles Rs 1,500 in Delhi market
Gold rate today : Gold prices fell Rs 400 to Rs 1,00,020 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday amid sustained selling by stockists, the All India Sarafa Association said. The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had ended at Rs 1,00,420 per 10 grams in the previous session. In line with the weakness, gold of 99.5 per cent purity also declined Rs 350 to Rs 99,700 per 10 grams (inclusive of taxes), compared with the earlier close of Rs 1,00,050 per 10 grams, PTI reported. "Gold prices extended losses on Wednesday as the US dollar continued to trade with minimal gains, surging to a one-week high. A decline in the geopolitical risk premium followed a positive outcome from President Donald Trump's meetings with Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders. This development raised hopes for a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict, which appears to be the leading factor in the decline in gold prices in recent times," said Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst, Commodities at HDFC Securities. Silver prices witnessed a steeper fall, plunging Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,12,500 per kilogram (inclusive of taxes). The white metal had closed at Rs 1,14,000 per kg in the previous session. In the global markets, spot gold was quoting at USD 3,326.04 per ounce, while spot silver traded at USD 37.07 per ounce, down nearly 1 per cent. "Gold prices inched lower to their lowest level in nearly three weeks as the dollar strengthened, while investors awaited US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's last speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday. Meanwhile, the US dollar index climbed to its highest level in more than a week and USD/INR fell at 87 level, weighing further on domestic prices," said Manav Modi, Analyst, Precious Metal Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Investors will also be tracking the minutes of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting, expected later in the day, for further cues on the central bank's monetary stance and the bullion outlook, he added.
