
Workplace Wellbeing: Embracing AI's work-enhancing capabilities to help us work smarter
There's a new sense of anxiety in the workplace. It's called FOBO, the fear of becoming obsolete, it's the worry that artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies will eventually make us all redundant.
A 2024 survey of 14,000 workers in 14 countries found that half believed their skills would no longer be required in five years. Another study last year reported 46% of employees in the US feared machines would perform their jobs within the next five years, with another 29% expecting to be superseded even sooner.
In Ireland, Government research revealed that approximately 30% of employees worked in occupations at risk of being replaced by technology. Historically, such concerns might have been limited to factory workers, but the research shows that modern-day FOBO affects almost everyone, including those working in finance, insurance, information technology, and communications.
'Almost all businesses, from the smallest start-ups to the largest organisations, are using AI-driven technology now,' says Maryrose Lyons, founder of the AI Institute, which runs training programmes.
'It's impacting most careers. The main ways are through generating content and ideas, automating repetitive administrative tasks and enhanced data analysis.'
Realising that AI has infiltrated their workplace in these ways unsettles some people, making them question their professional significance. According to career and counselling psychologist Sinéad Brady, it can undermine their sense of identity.
While we cannot predict how AI will develop or be integrated into the workplace, Lyons argues that it is an accessible tool for most in its current format.
'For many of us, what we do at work plays an important part in how we see ourselves and how we imagine others see us,' she says.
'If we think that a machine or computer programme can do what we do, we can begin to doubt our own value. This doubt can cause huge anxiety.'
The ever-escalating pace of change can further exacerbate this anxiety.
'We all have a different capacity for change,' says the work and organisational psychologist Leisha Redmond McGrath.
'Some love it while others prefer stability. But what's true for most of us is that we cope better with change if we feel we have some control over it. It's when we believe there's nothing we can do — that change is a wave coming at us, but we don't know when or how it will hit — that we feel most fearful.'
Face up to FOBO
So, what can we control when it comes to FOBO? Brady suggests facing the fear and reframing how we perceive this new technology.
'We've done it before,' she says. 'Many of us were afraid of computers when they were first introduced to the workplace, but we faced that fear.
'When Word and Excel, for example, took away some aspects of some jobs, they didn't make us obsolete. We learned to use them as tools in our work. We can do the same with AI.'
While we cannot predict how AI will develop or be integrated into the workplace, Lyons argues that it is an accessible tool for most in its current format.
'Just as you learned to master the likes of Excel, Outlook, and other software platforms when you first entered the workforce, you now have to learn AI,' she says.
'The American professor Ethan Mollick, a leading academic who studies the effects of AI on work, estimates that it takes an average of 10 hours of using AI tools before they start to come naturally.'
Brady points out that AI can enhance productivity and performance.

'By removing the need for some tasks, it gives us extra time for more challenging creative work,' she says. 'These days, I use AI to spellcheck and edit documents. When preparing talks, I ask it to present me with a counterargument so that I can address those points in my talk.
'Using AI in these ways makes me quicker and better at my job than someone who isn't using it.'
Brady also encourages us to concentrate on the human skills that AI will never replicate: 'I don't think AI will ever be able to communicate effectively, think creatively, or critically solve problems,' she says.
'A good tactic to counter FOBO would be to lean into those aspects of our work.'
Lyons gives some examples of how this might work in practice.
'If AI frees up six extra hours in your week, use them to engage in critical thinking, researching and coming up with ideas or building relationships with other humans, none of which AI can do,' she says.
'Have more off-site meetings with clients or sit down with an AI tool to brainstorm new ideas.'
Fight or flight
For those who are overcome by FOBO, despite the reassurances, Redmond McGrath looks at the psychological reasons behind it.
'It's terrifying to think you could lose your job and not have money to pay bills,' she says. 'If you identify with your work, it can feel threatening to learn that you might be usurped by technology. There's something called amygdala hijack that can occur when we experience threat in this way.
'A primitive part of our brain is activated, and we go into fight or flight mode, which can make us more sensitive and less rational.'

To prevent such negative reactions to FOBO, she suggests focusing on the 'building blocks' of wellbeing.
'Make sure you get enough rest, sleep, movement, and exercise,' she says. 'Eat well. Spend time on your relationships with others and with yourself. Connecting with nature or something bigger than yourself will give you a sense of perspective. And if you're feeling overwhelmed, talk to someone about it. It will calm your nervous system and you'll be more likely to figure out more rational and proactive ways of responding to FOBO, especially if you're someone whose sense of identity and purpose has been bound by your work.'
Talking to coworkers means you might also learn what they are doing to adapt to technology.
'Instead of trying to figure out the way forward on your own, which is daunting, or putting your head in the sand, which isn't advisable, finding out what others are doing and how employers and professional bodies are supporting people like you to retrain could help you capitalise on the positive benefits of technology,' says Redmond McGrath.
Don't be afraid to ask younger colleagues for support, too. Having grown up with technology, Redmond McGrath says they are often better able to use it and will likely be happy to share their expertise with you.

While noting the many benefits, Brady strikes a note of caution.
'The information it provides you with is based on data that isn't always accurate and that can be biased,' she says. 'AI and all modern technology are only ever as good as the information fed to them, which is why we should always question it for accuracy, assess it for quality, and not rely on it too much.'
Despite AI's limitations, Lyons urges people to to overcome their FOBO and explore what it offers.
'There are so many tools that are being used in all sorts of jobs and they are changing how people work for the better,' she says. 'It could be career-ending to ignore these tools. My advice is to engage and find out how this new technology can help us perform better and gain more satisfaction from our work.'

Question What do I need to know about upcoming Local Property Tax changes? Answer When paying your local property tax (LPT) from January 1, 2026, or working out your tax for the first time from November 1 of this year, it's worth noting that as property values have increased by 23% nationwide from November 2021 to December 2024, there are some changes on the way. It's not all bad news. The LPT revaluation is to take place on November 1, 2025, with the next set valuation period commencing in January 2026 for a duration of five years. What you can expect is a nominal increase on your LPT unless you live in a 12-bedroom mansion in South County Dublin. Let's start with the upside. The valuation bands that determine what we pay are set to widen by 20%, ensuring most Irish homeowners (the Government estimates this is 96%) will remain in their existing bands. They will start with Band 1: €0-€240,000, then Band 2: €240,001-€315,000. Band 3 and all subsequent bands increase in increments of €105,000 over €315,001 up to Band 19. The minister for finance, Paschal Donohoe, also announced a new base rate of 0.0906%, which is used to work out the tax on your property based on its market value. This rate was previously .1029% on the value of the home, so that's come down. That said, taxes are increasing, especially for prestige properties. For the lower bands, the fixed charges (set from the mid-point of the Band) for Bands 1 & 2 will be increased: from €90 to €95 for Band 1, and from €225 to €235 for Band 2. If you're wondering why your PLPT might potentially be higher, it's because those fixed charges sop up some of your savings on the percentage weighed to make up your LPT. There is a 5%-6% increase expected in LPT for properties valued under €1.26 million. Properties higher than €1.26 million, or properties that have appreciated significantly in value since 2021, will pay LPT that is 'proportionate to these factors'. Properties valued at €2.1 million or above will be charged on their actual value. Don't panic. If your home is valued at €525,000 or lower on November 1, 2025, the increase to your LPT will likely be no more than €30 extra a year. It's worth noting that from 2026, local authorities will now be able to vary LPT upwards by up to 25% and downwards by 15%. This is termed a 'local adjustment factor' to cover the desirability and struggle of some areas within areas, where houses relatively close in address of the same type can vary in their market value. The Government gives this example: A house in Cork (South-West Region), valued at €370,000 in 2021. The new estimated value could be €470,000 with local variations, an increase of 27%. That house remains in its original Band 4, and its liability for LPT goes up a relatively modest €23 from 2026, an increase from €405 in 2021 to €428 in 2026. That payment will be effectively frozen from 2026 until the next revaluation by the Government in three to five years. Value of your home So, what is your house worth, and how do you come to the right figure to ensure your LPT is correct? This is a self-assessment figure based on 'market values'. You will either be registering for LPT for the first time (with a new build or newly renovated home) or picking up on the LPT attached to the house or apartment you've recently bought. Once your new home has stamp duty paid, it is registered for LPT and has a property ID and an Eircode on those records. You will just update your personal details. If you know your property has increased in value, for example, you've added an extension, from November 1, you should update your valuation using the Property ID. There's a Property Valuation Tool on that can simply tot up the likely value of your home in one of the 18,600 'small areas' of the country, so keeping in mind any unique specifics of your property, start there. Revenue advises: 'When you value your property, you should include the value of lands and other buildings associated with your property. This includes lands or buildings that have domestic or residential purpose, or an amenity such as a yard, garden or patio, driveway or parking space, garage, shed or greenhouse, garden room or home office, and land up to one acre (0.4047 hectares) most suitable for enjoyment with the property, closest to the property, for example, the land that you use as a garden. "You don't have to include sheds used for agricultural purposes.' (I would add here if you have horses, ensure you have a herd number registered with the Department of Agriculture — something that's often overlooked, but it's the law of the land.) Money is tight for most families, and clearly there's a temptation to fudge things downward and slide into the narrowest band possible when settling on a valuation. Keep in mind that a 20% increase in the bands of values may help you out. Deferrals There's also been an adjustment to income thresholds for deferrals of LPT payments (a whopping 30%-40%), which is another encouragement to be honest and straightforward when making your valuation. From 2026, the income threshold for a full deferral for a single person will be increased from €18,000 to €25,000. For a couple, it will be increased from €30,000 to €40,000. The threshold for a partial deferral for a single person will be increased from €30,000 to €40,000. For a couple, it will be increased from €42,000 to €55,000. Payments Citizens Advice offers this useful tip: 'If you paid LPT for 2024 with a repeating payment method, such as a direct debit, the payment will continue in 2025 unless you choose a different way to pay. Repeating methods include LPT deductions from your salary, pension or social protection payment. "Any changes you make to the way you pay (for example, if you want to make a once-off direct payment) can be easily handled online through your own Revenue Property Record. First time out, Revenue assigns a unique Property ID to each residential property for LPT purposes, and you will be assigned a PIN to go with your account. John Whelan: Irish Government not taking advantage of Dell's AI skills
Dell has emerged as a leader in the world of supercomputers, the 'must-have' computer to fully realise all the benefits of AI. At the release of its first quarter financial results last Tuesday, the company demonstrated its ability to reinvent itself, pivoting its business from the PC business which employed 3,000 in 1990 at its height in Limerick, before the PC bubble burst, to now employing 5,000 in its facilities in Limerick, Cork and Dublin offering the industry's broadest AI solutions portfolio of desktop, data centre, and cloud innovations, designed to accelerate AI adoption and innovation. Yvonne McGill, chief financial officer, Dell Technologies, stated at the QI finance release: "With AI continuing to drive new growth, revenue was up 6% at $22.2bn (€19.9bn), with $12.1bn (€10.8bn) in AI orders this quarter alone." But the pivotal moment followed, with the US Department of Energy's announcement on Thursday that it would launch a new supercomputer, named Doudna, which will use Dell's advanced technology to perform complex computing tasks. This marks Dell as a key provider of cutting-edge supercomputers, using the latest Nvidia chips. According to Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the Doudna supercomputer will enable rapid innovation, advance breakthroughs in quantum computing and ensure America's scientists have the tools needed to win the global race for AI dominance. With its now well-established credentials, it is surprising that Dell, with three campuses across Ireland offering AI Centres of Excellence Solutions Development, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Operations, Engineering, IT and Finance, has not featured in either the Irish Government's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy launched in 2021, nor in a "refresher" version announced by Minister Jack Chambers in May. In the initial AI National Strategy document, Strand Three featured on 'driving AI in Irish enterprise' gives favourable mention to Meta/Facebook, Microsoft, Google as well as OpenAI and Anthropic, but no mention of Dell. Ireland's Government has confirmed its commitment to updating the region's National Digital and AI strategy this year to keep Ireland in a key position to leverage the benefits and opportunities of AI innovation. However, there is a concern in business circles that Minister Chambers has opted to focus the updated strategy on public services adoption, in its 'Guidelines for the Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Service', launched in May. The power of AI is undeniable, and 2025 will mark a pivotal moment for businesses to fully realise its potential. But the Government must do more to assist Irish businesses to harness AI to drive efficiency, innovation, and growth. Surveying 1,000 people in Ireland, earlier in the year, a Deloitte report shows that over two-thirds of employees say AI boosts their productivity at work, but less than a quarter of employers actively encourage the use of the technology. Colman O'Flynn, Cork Site Lead at Dell Technologies Ireland, in an interview with The Irish Examiner looking at the opportunity for Irish businesses in the AI era stated that their teams at their three campuses in Ireland remain committed to supporting Irish businesses as they navigate this exciting era, providing the tools and expertise needed to succeed. Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO at Dell Technologies, has been a long-term supporter of Ireland and has made a number of recent investments that further reinforce Ireland's position as a strategic location for Dell globally. Dell invested €2m in redeveloping its Customer Solution Centre (CSC) in Cork; and the recent expansion of the CSC Innovation Lab in Limerick enables customers and partners to harness data at the edge. Dell also invested €2m to create the company's only Open Telecom Ecosystem Lab outside the US in Cork. Michael Dell's experience in dealing with the US administration and the potential for collaboration with US partners in the AI developments could be invaluable to the Irish Government. Many are of the opinion that AI is the Manhattan Project of our time, and Irish businesses need to be part of the project, but we cannot do it alone. The likes of Dell need to be part of the Irish solution. The Trump administration stated that the Doudna project will help ensure America's scientists have the tools they need to win the global race for AI dominance. Elon Musk wanted to ‘move fast and break things' in Washington. The main thing he broke was his reputation
Elon Musk came to Washington with a chainsaw and left with a black eye . Shrinking government is hard, particularly when you do it callously and carelessly – and apparently on hallucinogens. As with US president Donald Trump's tariffs , the department of government efficiency (Doge) has created more volatility than value. A guy who went bankrupt six times doesn't really care about spending. And Trump certainly didn't want to see the headline 'Trump cuts social security'. READ MORE He just wanted to get revenge on 'the bureaucracy' by deputising Musk to force out a lot of federal employees and give the impression that they were cutting all the waste. As always with Trump, the former reality star, the impression matters more than the reality, especially the reality of his own sins. This past week, Trump tried to recast the very nature of crime. As the New York Times' Glenn Thrush wrote: 'President [Donald] Trump is employing the vast power of his office to redefine criminality to suit his needs – using pardons to inoculate criminals he happens to like, downplaying corruption and fraud as crimes, and seeking to stigmatise political opponents by labelling them criminals.' It is sickening that the US department of justice is considering settling a wrongful-death lawsuit by giving $5 million (€4.4 million) to the family of Ashli Babbitt – who was shot on January 6th, 2021 , by a Capitol police officer when she ignored his warnings and tried to climb through a smashed window into the Speaker's Lobby in the Capitol. If Babbitt was trying to help Trump claw back a 'stolen' election by breaking into the Capitol, then breaking into the Capitol must be a good thing to do, and any police officer who tried to stop her and protect lawmakers cowering under desks must be in the wrong. [ Elon Musk leaves Trump's club, yet he was never quite part of it Opens in new window ] To abet Trump's fake reality, the craven House Republicans refused to put up a plaque honouring the police officers and others who defended the Capitol that awful day. I take it personally because my dad spent 20 years as a police inspector in Washington in charge of Senate security. He would run to the House whenever there was trouble. So if on January 6th Mike Dowd had been preventing insurrectionists from assaulting lawmakers, he would now be, in Trump's eyes, not a hero deserving of a plaque, but a blackguard who was thwarting 'patriots', as Trump calls the rioters he pardoned. It is a disturbing bizarro world. Trump was rewriting reality again Friday afternoon as one of the most flamboyant, destructive bromances in government history petered out in the Oval Office. It had peaked last winter when Musk posted on social platform X, 'I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man', and again when Trump tried to reciprocate by hawking Teslas in the White House driveway. But Friday, even these grandmaster salesmen couldn't sell the spin that Musk had 'delivered a colossal change'. He said changing Washington was 'an uphill battle' and complained that Trump's 'big, beautiful' budget bill, which could add more than $3 trillion in debt, undercut his Doge attempts to save money. As Trump said, Musk got a lot of 'the slings and the arrows'. His approval rating cratered and violence has been directed toward Tesla, a brand once loved by liberals and in China, which is now tarnished. Musk cut off a reporter who tried to ask about a Times article asserting that he was a habitual user of ketamine and a dabbler in ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms even after Trump had given him enormous control over the government. That could explain the chainsaw-wielding, the jumping up and down onstage, the manic baby-making and crusading for more spreading of sperm by smart people, and the ominous Nazi-style salutes. When a reporter asked Musk why he had a black eye, he joked about the viral video of Brigitte Macron shoving her husband's face . Then he explained that while 'horsing around' with his five-year-old, X, he suggested the child punch him in the face, 'and he did'. The Trump and the Tony Stark prototype tried to convey the idea that they would remain tight, even though Musk would no longer be getting into angry altercations with Scott Bessent outside the Oval, sleeping on the floor of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and hanging around Mar-a-Lago. (Trump wants the $100 million Musk has pledged for his political operation.) Musk, wearing a black Doge cap and black 'Dogefather' T-shirt, looked around the Oval, which Trump has tarted up to look like a Vegas gift shop, and gushed that it 'finally has the majesty that it deserves, thanks to the president'. Trump gave Musk a golden ceremonial White House key, the kind of thing small-town mayors give out, and proclaimed: 'Elon's really not leaving. He's going to be back and forth, I think.' Trump said that the father of (at least) 14 would never desert Doge completely because 'It's his baby'. Musk brought the Silicon Valley mantra 'Move fast and break things' to Washington.
