Elgin Pride Parade & Festival organizers expecting big crowd for Saturday's downtown festivities
The Elgin Pride Parade & Festival returns for a third year with plans to be bigger, louder and prouder than ever before, organizers say.
Events start at 11 a.m. Saturday with the parade in downtown Elgin followed by a party in Festival Park, both organized by ELGbtq+ and the city of Elgin.
They've added another 10 units to the parade lineup, bringing the total to 60, when it steps off at Prairie Street and Grove Avenue, according to Travis Hooker, president of the ELGbtq+ Board.
The goal is to embrace and show off the city by creating positive, inclusive events open to the entire community, he said.
'One of our big things is to bring recognition to Elgin, specifically our downtown,' Hooker said.
With Saturday's weather forecast looking good — temperatures are expected to be in the 70s and the chance for rain low — ELGbtq+ is expecting a turnout of about 4,500 people, building on the 4,000 who came out it their inaugural year, he said. Last year, rain kept event attendance down to about 2,000, he said.
New parade participants include Walmart/Sam's Club, Footprints in Recovery, Marshmallow Moon Sound Bath Salon and the National Alliance on Mental Illness Fox Valley, a newly formed chapter in northern Kane County, Hooker said.
And there are a lot of groups returning, including Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gay (PFLAG), the Girl Scouts, and numerous Elgin churches and organizations.
The festival will feature 14 food trucks, 70 vendors and live music, with the headlining act being 'Crocodile Rockstar' Beazley Phillips, an Elton John impersonator.
Because it wants to be inclusive to all, the festival will have a specially designed sensory-safe area for those in the autism spectrum, Hooker said.
The official afterparty will feature an appearance by Orion Story, a contestant on season 14 of 'RuPaul's Drag Race,' at the Martini Room in downtown Elgin. Other performers will include Gina D'Licious, Sativa Diamond and Mark Love.
National Pride Month events have been experiencing a decrease in corporate support, but that's not the case in Elgin, where Walmart has signed on to be a sponsor, Hooker said.
There's been a lot of fear because of changes coming out of Washington, but those actions have 'helped galvanize the community' here, said Hooker, senior partner with CDO Executives. His firm trains police officers and government agencies on how to better interact with diverse and marginalized communities.
'They've found the fire to rally behind something,' he said. 'I see more interest and involvement now. We have lost some corporate sponsors but the community has come together.'
Hooker said he believes the increased support shows that not everything has to be based on 'far left or far right' viewpoints. While issues like transgender athletes can divide communities, including the trans community, most people are somewhere in the middle and support basic human rights, he said.

Netflix Shareholders Vote Out Board Member, Venture Capital Investor Jay Hoag In Rare Repudiation, Streamer Considering Whether To Accept His Resignation
In a year marked by some high-profile instances of shareholder activism, Netflix stockholders have voted director Jay Hoag, a venture capital investor, off the board. The vote follows a recommendation by leading proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services. ISS, which issues deep-dive analyses of issues up for vote at the annual meetings of many public companies, including the election of directors, had recommended a vote against Hoag for poor attendance – or failing to show up for at least 75% of his total board and committee meetings in 2024 without disclosing the reason for the absences. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders voted in large numbers against the company's compensation of its top executive officers led by CEO David Zaslav. His $51.9 million package did not pass a so-called say-on-pay vote, which is non binding but a definite red flag. 'Jay Hoag failed to attend at least 75 percent of the total meetings of the board and committee on which he served during the fiscal year under review. Specifically, Hoag only attended 50 percent of such meetings. The board did not disclose the reason for his absences. Directors who do not attend their board and committee meetings cannot be effective representatives of shareholders. When a director fails to attend at least 75 percent of the aggregate of his or her board and committee meetings, adverse vote recommendations will be issued with respect to that director in the absence of a valid reason. Accordingly, support for Jay Hoag is not considered warranted due to poor attendance,' ISS wrote in its report last month ahead of the June 5 shareholder meeting. Netflix noted today in an SEC filing that Hoag 'did not receive a majority of votes cast in his election to the board of directors. In accordance with the Company's director resignation policy, on June 5, 2025, Mr. Hoag offered his resignation from the Board, conditioned upon Board acceptance. In accordance with the Resignation Policy, the Nominating and Governance Committee of the Board will consider Mr. Hoag's resignation and recommend to the Board regarding whether to accept or reject the resignation or take other action. The Board will act on the Committee's recommendation and publicly disclose its decision and rationale within 90 days from the date the election results are certified.' The results of the shareholder vote set out in the filing showed 71.4 million votes for and almost 260 million votes against the director, who also sits on the boards of Peloton, Zillow and TripAdvisor. At Netflix, he served as the lead independent director serving on the nominating committee and governance committee, where he was the chair. He's been a Netflix board member since 1999. 'As a venture capital investor, Mr. Hoag brings strategic insights and financial experience to the Board. He has evaluated, invested in and served as a board member for numerous companies, both public and private, and is familiar with a full range of corporate and board functions. His many years of experience in helping companies shape and implement strategy provide the Board with unique perspectives on matters such as risk management, corporate governance, talent selection and management,' read the Netflix proxy, an annual filing where companies lists all the directors up for reelection. Hoag has also been a technology investor and venture capitalist for more than 40 years, the giant streamer noted, ' involved in numerous technology investments, including Actuate Software (acquired by OpenText), Airbnb, Ariba (acquired by SAP), Altiris (acquired by Symantec), BlueCoat Systems (formerly CacheFlow), C|NET, eHarmony, Electronic Arts, Encompass (acquired by Yahoo!), EXE Technologies (acquired by SSA Global), Expedia, Facebook, Fandango (acquired by Comcast), Groupon, LinkedIn, ONYX Software, Peloton, Prodege (parent company of Swagbucks & acquired by a private equity firm), RealNetworks, Sportradar, Spotify, SpringStreet (acquired by Strava, TechTarget, TripAdvisor, (acquired by Expedia), Viant (acquired by iXL), and Zillow.' "Who knew?" campaign casts Walmart in fresh light
Man-of-the-moment Walton Goggins is stepping up as Walmart's new hype man in fresh ads featuring an earworm track from The Who. The company revealed the image campaign featuring the on-trend actor at its annual associates pep rally in Fayetteville on Friday. "The Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon emceed the event. The big picture: The world's largest retailer, long known as a low-price leader, now also wants to be known for its near-limitless selection and ability to deliver items — fast. Goggins — known most recently for " The White Lotus," " The Righteous Gemstones" and " Fallout" — made an appearance at the campaign reveal. "[I may] change my last name to Walton, so I'll be the only Walton Walton here," he joked. State of play: Goggins is the nonchalant hero-in-the-know throughout one ad showing off some of the half a billion products available through the retail giant. A home sauna? Yes. Bear spray? You bet. Dancing shoes? Of course. The Who's 1978 rock anthem " Who Are You" plays prominently in the background, and supporting actors declare, "Who knew?" "Who-knew, who-knew," one sings. Spanish-language ads will feature comedic actress Stephanie Beatriz. What they're saying: "The role of this campaign is to really change perceptions that people have of the Walmart they think they know … to a [multichannel] retailer that has a broad assortment and can deliver to you as fast as an hour," chief marketing officer William White told Axios. The "Who knew?" concept will reach into the world of Reddit with "approved hacks" from Redditors and will get time on TikTok TopView, White said. Paris Hilton and Russell Westbrook teased the campaign earlier this week with posts featuring the company's yellow shopping bag imprinted with "I knew." Stunning stat: Through its brick-and-mortar stores, online shopping, and marketplace where third parties sell goods to Walmart customers, the company can sell more than half a billion items. The rollout follows news this week that the retailer will be expanding its drone delivery operations in five Southern cities.
