Report: Cubs Showing Interest in Trade With NL Central Rival originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Chicago Cubs have shown flashes of being a legitimate World Series contender so far this season. However, there are still major roster holes that need to be filled.

With the trade deadline just a few short weeks away, the Cubs are a team to watch closely.
Jed Hoyer and company know how good this team is capable of being. He is widely expected to be very busy in trade discussions as the deadline continues to draw closer.
Keeping that in mind, a new report has Chicago being interested in pulling off a trade with the National League Central division rival Pittsburgh Pirates.
According to a report from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Cubs are among the teams interested in trading for Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes.
"Ke'Bryan Hayes is no stranger to trade rumors. However, sources indicated to the Post-Gazette that this year, the smoke around Hayes' name seems to be more legitimate," Hiles wrote. "The Post-Gazette confirmed that the Yankees, Tigers and Cubs have all asked about Hayes, although there are seemingly a few other clubs that have also expressed interest."

Hayes would be an interesting pickup for Chicago. He would be able to come in and provide another option alongside the young Matt Shaw, who has struggled in his first Major League season thus far.
During the 2025 MLB season with Pittsburgh, Hayes has played in 83 games. He has hit two home runs to go along with 29 RBI's, while batting .243/.292/.299.
On the outside looking in, a trade for Hayes would be a bit confusing. Hayes would not be an upgrade over Shaw at the plate. Shaw has also been great defensively.
This is a situation to keep an eye on, but a trade coming to fruition would not improve the Cubs much if at all.

Rays slugger Junior Caminero to compete in Home Run Derby, start at third base in All-Star Game

Associated Press Rays slugger Junior Caminero announced Wednesday that he will take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday night in Atlanta, then learned hours later that he would start at third base for the AL squad in the All-Star Game the following night. In between, Caminero merely belted his 22nd homer of the season in the seventh inning of a 7-3 win in Detroit. Caminero, who turned 22 on July 5, leads all AL third basemen in homers in what has been a breakout season. He is hitting .254 and driven in 58 runs for the Rays, who moved within four games of Toronto in the AL East on Wednesday night. 'I'm going to put on a show. I'm going to try to put on a show just to give the fans the opportunity to get to know me, see my power,' Caminero said. 'Just being there with all those other All-Stars, it's going to be something very special.' Caminero is the sixth player to commit to the Home Run Derby, joining the Mariners' Cal Raleigh, James Wood of the Nationals, Byron Buxton of the Twins, the Pirates' Oneil Cruz and Ronald Acuna Jr. of the hosting Braves. Two more contestants are still to be announced, and Buxton's status is unclear after he was hit in the left hand in Wednesday night's win over the Cubs. Caminero was picked earlier this week as the All-Star replacement for Boston's Alex Bregman, who has been dealing with a strained right quadriceps. He learned he would start at third base after Wednesday night's game after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out of the Midsummer Classic so that he could rest an ailing Achilles tendon. Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes was chosen to replace Ramírez on the AL roster. The only Rays players besides Caminero to participate in the Home Run Derby have been Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Randy Arozarena, who reached the finals two years ago before losing to Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 'We get to see (Caminero) do probably a modified Home Run Derby every time he takes batting practice. I'm excited for him. I'm excited for his family,' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. 'Somewhat of a coming-out party for him. Hopefully, he gets the recognition that we've all seen in the talent and the ability to hit the ball a long way.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

Cabot Trade-Links Commanders' Terry McLaurin to Browns

Cabot Trade-Links Commanders' Terry McLaurin to Browns originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Speaking factually? We see no reason why the Cleveland Browns should be in the market here. And more facts: We see no reason why the Super Bowl-hopeful Washington Commanders should be sellers here. Advertisement But just in case ... Speaking on the 'Baskin and Phelps' show on 92.3 The Fan this week, Mary Kay Cabot - as plugged in as it gets when it comes to Cleveland - suggested the Browns would at least consider pursuing a top-tier wideout if the chance is there. A wideout like Commanders holdout star Terry McLaurin? Yes, something like that. 'When a Terry McLaurin comes along, you have to at least consider it. You have to look into it, weighing the pros and cons and how it may look over the next four years or something like that,' Cabot said. 'I wouldn't rule it out ...'' That is a reasonable just-in-case take. Advertisement But the truth is, it's more of a link to a "general way for a team to do business'' that it is a "rumor'' that deserves to have legs. It is helpful to know that the Browns might stay aware of opportunities. But at the same time, beat writer Cabot added, "I don't get the sense right now that (the Browns) are looking to add a high-priced wide receiver.' And again ... While McLaurin is in a contract standoff with the Commanders, we don't get the sense that - despite dozens of rumors - Washington wants to move him. He is in a contract year and wants an extension. ... with most observers believing he is due that. The new going rate for standout receivers is in the $30 million APY range, and that is probably where this will go. Advertisement In the meantime, he did not show up mandatory minicamp and whether he will be a holdout from training camp if a deal isn't done is a coming concern. McLaurin, 29, has put together five straight 1,000-yard seasons, and last year he caught 82 passes for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns while working with QB Jayden Daniels ... a combination the Commanders are not planning on breaking up. But just in case? Sure, the Browns - and 30 other teams - would answer that just-in-case phone. Will Commanders' Terry McLaurin Fetch Top Dollar In Contract Talks?

Will Commanders' Terry McLaurin Fetch Top Dollar In Contract Talks? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The only blight on the Washington Commanders' last two offseasons is playing out before our eyes, with Terry McLaurin not a happy camper with his current contract situation. Advertisement Having already sat out of OTAs and mandatory minicamp as he looks to force through a deal, training camp is on the horizon, and the big-money deal Terry wants, he hopes, will be forthcoming. But exactly what he wants and what the Commanders are willing to pay isn't known, but we think a contract worth roughly $30 million APY is valid. However, if McLaurin is thinking that he can break the market, CBS Sports has news for him. "McLaurin is one of the most underrated wide receivers in football," CBS Sports writes. "Coming off five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, McLaurin put up numbers despite the myriad of quarterbacks that have thrown to him over the years. No coincidence McLaurin's touchdown numbers went from four the previous season to 13 with Jayden Daniels as his quarterback. Advertisement "Where McLaurin gets paid amongst the elite receivers is the question. A pay raise is coming, but how much will the Commanders pay? McLaurin should get top-10 money for his position. Highly unlikely he'll be in the top-five range." Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin (17) reacts after a play against the Philadelphia Eagles during the first half in the NFC Championship game at Lincoln Financial Streicher-Imagn Images To be in the top five, McLaurin's deal would have to be at a minimum $32 million APY, which is what Philadelphia Eagles stud A.J. Brown is currently on. But the top 10, as CBS Sports thinks? Per that starts at $28 million APY with the Miami Dolphins' Jaylen Waddle. We then have Tyreek Hill, Amon-Ra St Brown, and Brandon Aiyuk, who all earn $30 million APY. Advertisement That's where Terry will land if Washington wants to pay him accordingly. In truth, only $5 million APY is separating Hill at No. 7 and Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson at No. 2, so who knows how hard McLaurin's agent will be pushing. Exactly where it lands is going to be a fascinating watch, as the Commanders need to secure their best offensive weapon to a long-term deal. Yeah, it'll be expensive, but how high is the franchise willing to go?
