Russian-controlled Crimea brings in information blackout designed to counter Ukrainian drone attacks

Yahoo18-07-2025
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Authorities in Russian-controlled Crimea said on Friday they were introducing an information blackout designed to counter Ukrainian drone, missile and sabotage attacks.
Sergei Aksyonov, the head of Crimea - which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014 - said he had signed a decree banning media outlets and social media users from publishing any photos, video or other content that revealed the location of Russian forces or details of Ukrainian attacks on the Black Sea peninsula.
"The relevant decree was adopted to safeguard public security and military and other important facilities in the republic," Aksyonov said in a statement on Telegram.
Ukraine, which has said it wants Crimea back - something Moscow says it will not allow to happen - has repeatedly launched major attacks on Russian military assets in Crimea and targeted Russia's Black Sea Fleet, which is formally based on the peninsula.
Aksyonov specifically mentioned the need to classify the location of Russian air defence systems, weapons, military equipment, and military personnel and not to share any GPS coordinates.
He also said that the ban covered the sharing of any information detailing the location, nature or aftermath of any Ukrainian attacks on Crimea, including missile and drone or sea drone strikes and sabotage.
Russian bloggers, media, and social media users frequently post images and details of Ukrainian strikes on Russian-held territory, often triggering criticism from both local and federal authorities.

Finance and foreign ministers in Mexico to talk trade ahead of Carney's visit

OTTAWA — Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne are in Mexico to meet with President Claudia Sheinbaum to talk economic growth, trade and security. Their trip is happening ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney's planned visit to Mexico to meet with Sheinbaum. The U.S. hit Canada on Friday with a 35 per cent tariff on goods not compliant with the Canada-United States-Mexico agreement on trade, known as CUSMA, while Mexico received a 90-day reprieve from threatened higher levies. CUSMA is scheduled for a mandatory review next year. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called last year for a bilateral trade deal between Canada and the United States because he said Mexico was serving as a back door for Chinese auto parts and vehicles entering the North American market. Anand and Champagne will also meet with Canadian and Mexican business leaders during the two-day trip. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 5, 2025. Poll finds Americans view Pope Leo XIV more favorably than all of these prominent figures

Americans view Pope Leo XIV more favorably than President Donald Trump, Sen. Bernie Sanders and other key figures, according to a new poll. WASHINGTON - Americans view Pope Leo XIV more favorably than President Donald Trump, Sen. Bernie Sanders, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other prominent figures, according to a new poll. The Gallup poll, conducted July 7-July 21, found that Pope Leo XIV has a net favorable rating of 46%, the highest among 14 U.S. and global newsmakers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has a net favorable rating of 18% while Sanders has a rating of 11%. In comparison, the other figures on the list are rated more negatively rather than positively. New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who's traveled across the U.S. with Sanders on a 'fighting oligarchy' tour, has a net favorable rating of negative 4%. Former President Joe Biden, Vice President JD Vance and Newsom all have a net favorable rating of negative 11%, while Trump's rating is negative 16%, according to the poll. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and billionaire Elon Musk have the two lowest net favorable ratings: negative 23% and negative 28% respectively. The poll also found that the favorability rating of Trump administration officials has gone down since January. For instance, Musk's net favorable rating was negative 4% according to a Gallup poll conducted Jan. 21-Jan. 27. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who oversaw the purge of U.S. Agency for International Development programs, had a net favorable rating of 8% in January. Now it's at negative 16%. The poll of 1,002 adults has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Scarborough: Bondi ordering probe of Obama administration ‘extraordinarily stupid'

MSNBC pundit Joe Scarborough tore into President Trump and his attorney general Pam Bondi over her opening of a grand jury investigation into how Obama administration officials handled intelligence about Russian interference in the 2016 election. 'It's extraordinarily stupid on so many counts,' Scarborough said. 'If you look at the timeline, the timeline doesn't add up. It's like when Donald Trump is saying that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton created the Epstein files. No, no, no, no. That all happened during Donald Trump's first term.' Former President Obama, Scarborough said, had 'nothing to do with' intelligence investigations around the time of the 2016 election. 'You look at the timeline here about what happened and when it happened, Barack Obama had nothing to do with this, by anybody's accounts, and especially by the Senate Republican Intelligence Committee run by Marco Rubio, who afterwards said that it was Donald Trump's 2016 campaign that created a 'grave intelligence counterintelligence threat to the United States of America,' the pundit continued. 'That was Marco Rubio, the current secretary of state. That was every Republican on the Senate Intel Committee after poring through all of the documents,' he continued. 'That's what they found.' Bondi on Monday said Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard 'exposed clear and blatant weaponization by corrupt intelligence officials acting at the behest of the Democrat Party and likely former President Obama' before the election that year. The accusations by Trump and his top officials led to a rare statement from the former president calling the president's comments a 'distraction.' Scarborough is a longtime critic of the president, who took some heat from progressives for traveling to Mar-A-Lago after the 2024 election to meet with Trump in an effort, he said at the time, 'to restart communications,' with the administration.
