Hawana: Journalists must remain spirited in their role of advancing nation
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his hope that journalists in Malaysia will remain spirited in their role of advancing the nation, in addition to reporting on the hardship and challenges currently faced by the people.
Conveying his appreciation to media practitioners in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (Hawana), the prime minister also emphasised the critical role of journalists in delivering news and information to the public.
He said this role includes the duty to support and offer constructive criticism in efforts to develop both states and the country.
"I wish all journalists undertaking this extraordinary task a happy occasion.
"They play a critical role in reporting the bitter struggles of the people," he said during a press conference after attending a meeting with Sabah Pakatan Harapan leaders last night.
Anwar also acknowledged the sacrifices and difficulties journalists endure in fulfilling their professional commitments, urging them to continue their work with full zeal.
Hawana is celebrated annually on May 29, and for 2025, the Hawana Summit will be held on June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), and scheduled to be officiated by the prime minister.
Organised by the Communications Ministry with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, Hawana will feature various events including a Pantun Festival on May 31, a pre-launch event with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, and a media forum jointly organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14. – Bernama

Close Anwar-Paetongtarn bond spurs economic, strategic collaboration

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Thailand are entering a new phase of stronger bilateral ties driven by the close relationship between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, says a senior Thai official. Thai foreign minister Maris Sangiampongsa said the rapport between the two leaders reflected a growing partnership focused on cooperation across multiple sectors, especially in border regions, reported Bernama. 'The prime ministers have built a strong bond. This opens up opportunities, not just in trade and investment, but also in security,' he told Bernama during the 46th Asean Summit held here recently. He added that regular communication between both leaders had strengthened mutual understanding and paved the way for more strategic collaboration. Thailand remains a key economic partner for Malaysia. In 2024, it was Malaysia's seventh-largest trading partner globally and third-largest within Asean, with total trade reaching US$25.03 billion (RM114.56 billion). Trade between the two countries rose to US$3.96 billion (RM17.65 billion) from January to February this year, up from US$3.67 billion (RM16.80 billion) in the same period last year. Both governments are committed to developing the shared border into a vibrant economic corridor, focusing on trade, investment, and cross-border infrastructure to enhance connectivity. Efforts are also underway to integrate special border economic zones to further boost trade and investment in the border areas, which currently account for over 30% of total bilateral trade. Maris described joint border development as a model of mutually beneficial cooperation. He pointed to sectors with high potential – including the halal industry, palm oil, and rubber – as areas for further collaboration. 'While both governments can facilitate opportunities, success depends on strong private sector participation,' he said. 'There are solid policies in place that can support greater business collaboration and regional development.' Anwar and Paetongtarn have maintained regular contact through meetings and phone calls. They have met three times to date: in Putrajaya in December, Bangkok in April, and most recently at the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Rafizi has time for philosophical underpinning
From Terence Netto In spurning overtures to assuage his defeat in the PKR polls, former party deputy president Rafizi Ramli is treading a sensible path towards a return to prominence in his party. He has declined his successor Nurul Izzah Anwar's offer to be appointed as a second deputy president in the party. He has also said he is not leaving PKR to form a new party. Also, he has cautioned PKR against accepting Tengku Zafrul Aziz as a member, now that the latter has resigned from Umno and is seeking to join PKR. Rafizi said allowing Tengku Zafrul, who has not resigned from the Cabinet, to join PKR would set an unhealthy precedent. Tengku Zafrul joined the Cabinet on an Umno ticket. If he leaves Umno, he should properly resign from his ministerial post. By turning a blind eye to this flouting of rules, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is weakening a rules-based system. By contrast, Rafizi is seen as adhering to the rules that underpin the system, whereas Anwar is seen as sticking by them only when it suits him. Combined with Anwar's tardiness in implementing the Reformasi agenda, it is he who is losing credibility, while Rafizi appears to be gaining it. Hence, it is better for Rafizi to tread the more sensible path of withdrawing from the fray following his defeat in the deputy president contest. A brief stay in the political wilderness is sometimes necessary for politicians to resurge when circumstances change and those who replaced them are found to be terribly wanting. Nurul Izzah is a candidate for this fate because she has done little to merit her elevation within PKR, her success at beating Rafizi coming when there has been an electoral wipeout of PKR in her family's bastion of Permatang Pauh. All she has going for her is the aura of being Anwar Ibrahim's daughter. But this kind of political capital is the flimsiest of assets. When the beguiled finally discover it to be empty, they are apt to regard it as fraudulent in the first place. The reckoning that follows is often grim for aura-riding leaders, from Eva Perón to Imelda Marcos. Rafizi would do well to take note that political exile has often been the proving ground from which estimable leaders have returned stronger. What he could now beneficially do is formulate a political ideology for PKR, a party that has lacked one since the Reformasi movement was born 27 years ago. The Reformasi movement was always sure of what it was against – cronyism, nepotism and abuse of power – than what it was for and the philosophical basis of that alignment. It is easier to fight for principles than to live by them. The latter requires knowledge of political philosophy. But just now, Rafizi has shown he has principles.
