
GCC visitor numbers to Germany grow to over 489,689 in 2024
The announcement was made during a press conference, which was held on the opening day of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025.

With direct flights from the GCC countries to Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Hannover, Stuttgart, Cologne and Hamburg, this year we want to encourage GCC residents to visit Germany and experience our diverse year-round tourism offering.'

This includes Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture for 2025, which is located in the Saxony region of the country. 2025 also marks the 275th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death, with dozens of events lined up to commemorate his life and music.

Germany's Industrial Core Is Collapsing Under The US Trade Deal And The Green Agenda
The asymmetrical trade agreement between the EU and the US will further worsen Germany's recession. Yet neither politicians nor corporate leaders show any willingness to make the sweeping policy changes needed to reverse course. Germany's economic data leaves no room for illusions. After contracting by 0.9% in 2023 and another 0.5% last year, the decline will continue this year. The Machine Room Has Been Blown Apart It is precisely the sectors that have sustained German prosperity for decades—automobiles, construction, machinery—that are under the heaviest pressure. Without the artificial boost from state spending—now accounting for half of GDP—the private sector is set to shrink by 4–5% this year. Since 2018, total productivity has been in steady decline. This is also a social problem: Germany is importing hundreds of thousands of welfare migrants into its social systems, yet the economy would have to boom just to keep per capita prosperity from falling. A new survey by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) confirms what was already obvious: the EU–US trade deal will especially hurt Germany's export-oriented economy. According to the survey, 58% of companies expect additional burdens, rising to 74% for firms with direct US business. Only 5% expect any benefit. 'This deal may have been politically necessary, but for many German companies it's a bitter pill,' said DIHK CEO Helena Melnikov. 'Higher tariffs, more bureaucracy, falling competitiveness'—that's the price of the diplomatic truce between Washington and Brussels. As of Thursday, a general 15% tariff applies to exports to the US, hitting automotive and machinery manufacturers hardest. 89% of US-oriented firms report immediate disadvantages, 72% fear further tariff hikes, 80% worry about political arbitrariness in transatlantic trade, and more than half plan to scale back US operations. Business Was Already Weak In its May survey of over 21,000 companies, only 23% reported positive business expectations—down five points—while 30% expected deterioration. In industry, one in three anticipates fewer orders. Just 19% plan to increase investment, while about a third plan to cut back. High energy prices, labor shortages, and political uncertainty are seen as the main drags. The DIHK forecasts a 0.3% recession for 2025, but adjusting for state spending, the real decline is closer to 4–5%. Daily surveys confirm the same message: Germany is being deindustrialized, losing hundreds of thousands of core-sector jobs. The social security deficits already emerging are just the beginning. Yet both politics and business refuse to conduct an honest diagnosis. The Green Deal remains sacrosanct. Energy costs for German industry are up to three times higher than for US competitors, double that of French firms—pushing energy-intensive sectors out of the country. Dancing Around the Golden Calf Nobody dares openly challenge Brussels' climate agenda. A rare exception came in June, when a group of works council representatives wrote an open letter to the Chancellor, naming the Green Deal as a root cause of decline. But most CEOs dodge the question. Mercedes-Benz chief Ola Källenius cites 'weak demand, high production costs, and US tariff uncertainty' for falling margins—but ignores the Green Deal's role. VW CEO Oliver Blume calls for lower energy prices and tax incentives for EVs—essentially more subsidies to keep the transition alive. Corporate leadership is now fused ideologically with the Green Deal. The energy transition has battered Germany's industrial base: sectors like construction and automotive have been knocked completely off track. A Split Economy Events like the 'Made for Germany' coffee chat between 61 CEOs and the Chancellor are symbolic of a corporatist mindset. Large corporations can adjust or relocate production to sidestep regulation, but small and medium-sized enterprises—the Mittelstand—are being crushed. The Green Deal's bureaucratic weight ultimately clears the field for big corporations by eliminating smaller competitors. The Mittelstand has no political backing, and many are fighting daily for survival—often ending in bankruptcy. In H1 2025, insolvencies rose 9.4% year-on-year to 11,900 companies. There is still no sign of a policy shift on climate. The German corporate elite has failed to seize the initiative to force political change. AfD Tops Poll As Germany's Most Popular Political Party
The poll, conducted by the Forsa Institute for Social Research and Statistical Analysis on behalf of RTL Deutschland, showed that 26 percent of Germans would vote for the AfD. The AfD, an anti-mass immigration party, came second in Germany's national parliamentary elections, earning nearly 21 percent of the vote. The new polling puts the right-wing party ahead of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's mainstream conservative bloc, the Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian allies, the Christian Social Union (CSU). The CDU/CSU slid to 24 percent, its worst result since the 2021 federal election. Germany's manufacturing sector, the largest in Europe, has had two years of contraction and is expected to broadly stagnate in 2025, according to an EU Commission macroeconomic forecast. Only 14 percent of poll respondents said they expected the economic situation to improve, while 62 percent anticipated a deterioration, which it said was 'the highest pessimism level' of the current year. Germany is also struggling with the loss of affordable Russian gas, historic Volkswagen plant closures, and fierce competition from cheaper Chinese electric vehicles. The country has gone through a major population change, with its net population increasing by more than 3.5 million between 2014 and 2024, driven entirely by migration. During this period, the number of German citizens fell by 2 million to 71.6 million, while the foreign population grew to 13.1 million from around 7.5 million, Statistics Office data showed. In 2015, under Chancellor Angela Merkel, more than 1 million refugees, many of them from Syria, as well as Afghans and Iraqis, arrived in Germany. One hundred days after Merz's election as chancellor, his approval ratings have fallen to a record low, with 67 percent 'dissatisfied' with his work. The poll showed that 'dissatisfaction' is particularly pronounced among supporters of the AfD, at 95 percent. In February's general election, Merz fell short of forming a majority government, as is often the case in German politics, and, after lengthy negotiations, his party formed a coalition with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD). At the time, Merz ruled out the party forming a government with the AfD. Forty-three percent of respondents said they expected the CDU/CSU/SPD coalition to end early. AfD's policies include strong support for traditional marriage between a man and woman, the preservation of national independence in the face of the European Union's increasing power, the preservation of German culture amid 'European integration' and Islamization, and border security, including the expulsion of illegal immigrants. Last year, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk deepened his support for the party, defending it against accusations of extremism and championing its policies as the nation's best path forward during challenging times. Robin Brooks, a senior fellow in the global economy and development program at the Brookings Institution, said in an Aug. 13 X post that 'Germany is in real trouble.' 'Its political center refuses to confront immigration, which is the issue driving relentless AfD growth,' he said. 'Instead, the political center name-calls AfD voters. Dereliction of duty.' Despite gaining considerable proportions of the vote, populist parties such as the AfD have been frozen out of governing coalitions in Europe by political opponents who regard them as extremist. In Austria, conservatives, Social Democrats, and liberals formed a coalition in March to block the anti-immigration and euro-skeptic Freedom Party from taking power, even after it won an electoral victory with 29 percent of the vote in September 2024. French President Emmanuel Macron on June 9, 2024, called a surprise snap parliamentary election following his centrist Renaissance party's poor performance in European Parliament elections, when the populist and nationalist party National Rally (RN) performed very strongly. RN, which recently polled at 35 percent, has increased its voter share ahead of the French presidential elections, which are scheduled to be held in or around April 2027.

Talabat Forecast Upgrade Follows Strong Quarter
TDT | Manama Talabat Holding plc has raised its full-year growth forecasts after a second quarter surge powered by post-IPO expansion and the rapid uptake of its talabat pro loyalty programme across GCC and non-GCC markets. The Dubai-headquartered delivery platform posted a 32 per cent yearon-year rise in gross merchandise value (GMV) to USD 2.4 billion for the quarter, with revenue up 35pc to USD 982 million. Adjusted EBITDA rose 31pc to USD 166m, maintaining a margin of 6.8pc, while net income climbed 33pc to USD 119m, or 4.9pc of GMV. Citing continued momentum in customer acquisition and order frequency, the company lifted its GMV growth target for the year to 27-29pc, up from 17-18pc. Revenue growth is now projected at 29-32pc, compared with an earlier 18-20pc. Adjusted EBITDA margin is expected at 6.5pc, net income margin at 5pc, and adjusted free cash flow at 6pc. Talabat credited its performance to both core GCC markets – including Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar and Oman – and faster growth from Egypt, Jordan and Iraq. The UAE remained its largest market, while Kuwait delivered over 20pc growth for both the quarter and first half. The company also reported robust performance in its Food vertical and faster gains in its Grocery & Retail segment, supported by a higher share of subscription and tMart revenues. The GCC accounted for 83pc of GMV in Q2, with non-GCC markets making up the remaining 17pc.
