3 Big Numbers is a weekly column that looks at a few key details from around the c-store industry.
Seven & i Holdings, parent company of 7-Eleven, released its fiscal Q4 and full-year earnings on Wednesday, and there was a lot to talk about. CEO Ryuichi Isaka likely presided over his last earnings report at the helm, operating income took a big hit and analyst questions focused on the retailer's upcoming IPO of its North American operations, 7-Eleven Inc.
When we looked specifically at the North American data for this column, there were a few numbers that jumped out, from hundreds of millions in cost savings to the 104 million 7Rewards and Speedy Rewards members on the books. But since 7-Eleven is banking on its food programs to steady the ship, we decided to focus on its gains in that area.
In today's '3 Big Numbers,' we look at how private label goods, hot food and proprietary QSRs are playing a role as 7-Eleven hopes its renewed food focus can boost sales.
The number of 7-Eleven stores expected to have QSRs by the end of fiscal 2025.
While many customers might associate c-store QSRs with the likes of Arby's or Subway, 7-Eleven has spent years developing its own restaurants, including Raise the Roost Chicken & Biscuits and Laredo Taco Company. 7-Eleven already has QSRs in 1,080 stores, but it plans to reach a total of 1,130 in fiscal 2025, according to the earnings presentation.
The benefits are clear. On average, 7-Elevens with QSRs see around 400 extra customers per day, which helps those stores earn more than $2,000 more in daily sales than stores without a restaurant, according to the presentation. Margins are slightly higher for stores with QSRs as well.
Seven & i also is looking to streamline SKUs and use meal deals and special offers to boost its food sales, according to the earnings presentation.
The average same-store sales increase per day for stores with a modernized food and beverage program.
7-Eleven has been working on its food and beverage modernization program for years. This food refresh includes enhanced grab-and-go areas, bakery items and an updated coffee program, according to the earnings presentation.
And according to that presentation, stores that have the full modernization are earning $135 more per day, on average, than they did before the updates.
About 563 7-Eleven stores have the full food program, while 1,583 sites have portions of it. Another 423 stores are expected to get a total or partial modernization in the Q1 2025. As the program spreads, this should boost sales and the bottom line.
7-Eleven's profit margin on private label goods.
One of the great things about private label items is that, when done well, they keep customers happy while putting more money in the company's coffers.
7-Eleven, for example, noted in its Q4 earnings report that the profit margin on its private label items was 51.3%. National brands, meanwhile, had a 33% profit margin. That's a more than 18 percentage point difference.
The retailer plans to press its advantage in fiscal 2025. After adding 215 new private label items in 2024, it's hoping to debut roughly the same amount this year, including launching eight new categories.

Stellantis' new CEO Filosa set to earn up to $23 million a year

MILAN (Reuters) - Stellantis' new CEO Antonio Filosa will earn at least $4 million annually in his first two years at the helm, rising to up to $23 million a year from 2028, including bonuses, a document showed, although his remuneration will be lower than predecessor Carlos Tavares. Filosa officially becomes CEO of the owner of brands such as Chrysler, Peugeot and Jeep at the end of this month, tasked with turning around the carmaker's performance and recovering lost U.S. market share. He will receive an annual base pay of $1.8 million, a company document issued ahead of a July 18 extraordinary general meeting showed, just below the 2 million euros ($2.3 million) granted to his predecessor Tavares. On top of his starting salary, Filosa will pocket annual bonuses worth up to 400% of his base pay, based on the achievement of financial and business plan objectives set out by the company. Filosa, formerly Stellantis' North American chief, will also be granted shares as long-term incentives (LTI), based on the company's performance, starting from up to 500% of his salary this year and up to a maximum of 780% from 2027. Until the potential LTIs are paid, in 2028, the company will provide the top manager a cash award of $1.2 million each year. Tavares, who abruptly resigned as CEO last December due to disagreements with the board over strategy, pocketed a final 35 million euro compensation package, despite a dramatic plunge in sales and profit and broken relationships with suppliers, dealers and investors. In 2023, when Stellantis reported record results, Tavares earned a total of 36.5 million euros. Filosa will also benefit from the company's U.S. health care and retirement plans and tax equalisation benefits, as well as having access to other fringe benefits such as the personal use of the company's aircraft and vehicles, personal security and annual medical check-ups. Filosa's term will be for five years, "to ensure leadership stability and maximize the ability of the company to respond effectively to profound and prolonged industry change", according to the document. Filosa will be appointed an executive board member at the July 18 EGM. Tavares was also appointed CEO for five years but left after just under four years. Finland's AIATELLA secures funds for AI cardiovascular imaging solutions

Finnish startup AIATELLA has raised €2m ($2.27m) in financing to develop and scale its cardiovascular imaging technology powered by AI. The investment will support the company in conducting clinical trials and further developing its ultrasound-based preventative screening tool, which can identify and quantify carotid artery narrowing within minutes. Nordic Science Investments spearheaded the funding round, with contributions from Specialist VC, Business Finland, and Harjavalta Ventures, among other investors. The Automated Image Measurement technology of the startup leverages images from ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to analyse vascular imaging. This multimodal technology identifies abnormalities and quantifies changes over time in those at risk. It significantly reduces the time specialists spend on manual image measurements and documentation. As a result, clinicians can dedicate more time to patient care. AIATELLA is currently navigating the medical approval processes in several European and North American countries, including France, the US, and the UK. AIATELLA co-founder and CEO Jack Parker said: 'Our technology helps medical professionals analyse imaging much more efficiently, and at an earlier stage, so patients can get help before it's too late.' Initially applied to the aorta artery, AIATELLA's vision extends to encompass all blood vessels in the body with its technology. The startup noted that it is also developing a portable ultrasound-based screening technology for mass screening of individuals prior to the occurrence of symptoms. This approach aims to facilitate early detection of cardiovascular diseases, which are a major cause of mortality worldwide. The technology has already been employed in the UK and Finland at screening events, where it has helped identify potentially at-risk individuals. AIATELLA also aims to gather data on the presentation and progression of cardiovascular conditions across different sexes and ethnicities, as symptoms can vary widely among these different groups.
