Mayor Wee: Efforts underway to address foul smell at Malaysia-China Friendship Park's pond

Borneo Post27-04-2025

Datuk Wee Hong Seng
KUCHING (April 27): The increasing number of fish is among the factors contributing to the foul odour emitted from the Malaysia-China Friendship Park's pond, said Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
He explained another cause of the odour is visitors tossing leftover bread into the pond, presumably to feed the fish.
'The number of fish at our Malaysia-China Friendship Park's pond is increasing and this is one of the reasons why the pond is smelly.
'Some visitors toss leftover bread into the pond is another reason that causes the pond to smell. If it is only the fish feed, the pond water wouldn't have a foul odour,' he said during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday.
He made these remarks in response to an inquiry about whether the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) would consider installing a water filter system in the pond to eliminate the foul odour.
Wee acknowledged that a water filtration system would benefit the pond, particularly during the dry season.
He said that while MBKS would look into the matter, they are also considering organising a fishing competition as a means to reduce the number of fish in the pond.
He explained that if the competition were to take place, its goal would be to remove some fish from the Malaysia-China Friendship Park's pond and relocate them to the pond at MBKS park off Jalan Padungan.
He added that the council would discuss the matter with the parties involved for maintaining the Malaysia-China Friendship Park.
Wee also said that the council would look into complaints regarding inadequate lighting along the walking path near the Admiral Cheng Ho Statue.
He said MBKS is awaiting approving for funding to install beautification lights in the affected area.
To address littering issues in the park, he advised visitors who witness others throwing rubbish out of their car windows to take a photo of the act, along with the car's registration number, using their mobile devices.
The mayor said with photographic evidence, they would be able to take action against these litterbugs such as imposing a fine.
'The same goes with those who transport bulky waste to public areas for illegal dumping. Take a photo and show it to us, and we can issue them a compound,' he added.
Responding to a complaint about motorists driving with their pets in their arms, Wee said: 'All drivers must be responsible for their actions. Be it cuddling their pet or using their mobile device, it is inappropriate.'
He urged all road users to avoid reckless behaviour and instead uphold civic-mindedness to ensure the safety of everyone. foul odour lead Malaysia China Friendship Park's pond

Online fraud in Melaka costs victims RM30.85m in five months

MELAKA: A total of 934 online scam cases with losses amounting to RM30.85 million were recorded in Melaka from January 1 to June 2 this year. State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said all the cases were reported through the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) and the police. During the same period, authorities arrested 531 individuals linked to online scam syndicates, with 312 of them charged in court. 'This year's largest individual loss involved a victim who lost RM2.9 million. Alarmingly, more professionals—including doctors, bank officers and corporate managers—are falling victim to these scams, not just ordinary citizens or civil servants,' he told reporters here today. He noted that while total losses were slightly lower than the same period last year, online scams remain a serious concern and ongoing awareness efforts are crucial. The most common scams reported involved fake investments on Telegram and Facebook, bogus job offers, and non-existent house-cleaning services. 'Despite being aware of the risks, many victims were lured in due to greed and impulsive decisions,' he added. Mohd Noor Helmy was speaking after launching the Content Creator Enhancement Workshop under the Anti-Scam Awareness Campaign, which saw the participation of around 50 individuals, including MADANI community leaders. The programme, held in collaboration with the Melaka Information Department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the police, also trained participants to create digital content and serve as information agents to raise public awareness of online scams.

National Education Council set to be top strategic platform for education coordination

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Education Council will serve as the country's highest strategic platform to coordinate education policies and implementation across ministries, from preschool to tertiary levels, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said. She said the establishment of the council will also enable education-related issues to be resolved comprehensively and holistically. Fadhlina said this in a Facebook post after co-chairing a coordination meeting for the establishment of the council with Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir today. "Today's discussion focused on the proposed terms of reference, direction and integrated operations of the council," she said. She said the bold and radical education reforms envisioned require the comprehensive involvement of all stakeholders. –Bernama

Investigation on stirring appearance of Bornean clouded leopard

KUCHING: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation's (SFC) Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT) has been dispatched to Matu in the central Mukah Division of Sarawak, following the recent sighting of a Bornean clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi borneensis) there. SFC general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran said the team would investigate the alleged appearance of the carnivore on a road in Matu, a video recording of which has gone viral on social media since yesterday. 'SFC views this matter seriously and has sent a SWAT team to assess the situation, which has gone viral on Facebook,' he said in a statement on the SFC's official Facebook page. According to him, SFC takes the daylight discovery of the nocturnal wildlife, which is categorised as fully protected under the Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998, with great interest and concern and advises residents living near the location to be more vigilant and avoid any close interaction. 'Wildlife is an invaluable asset and their protection is a shared responsibility,' he said. Abang Arabi said the discovery of the clouded leopard during broad daylight and in an area close to humans indicated the possibility of habitat disturbance or a lack of food sources in the surrounding forest clusters. However, SFC views this exciting discovery as a positive indication that Sarawak is still a natural habitat for wild animal species that are fully protected. 'This proves the success of the Sarawak government's continuous efforts through SFC in preserving and protecting the state's biodiversity,' he said. In the viral video, the clouded leopard appeared to be non-aggressive and was seen eating scraps on the road during the day and did not react to the family who filmed it from their car while passing through the area. Bernama's search on the internet found that the Bornean clouded leopard is a nocturnal mammal included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, with its population estimated at only around 3,800 in the archipelago.
