GNWFL round five wrap: Brigades and Rovers headline round five in a three-point thriller
Brigades edged out Rovers in a three-point thriller, chalking up back-to-back GNWFL wins as the headline match of round five at Greenough Oval on Saturday.
The tight contest went down to the wire with the Hawks winning 4.7 (31) to the Demons 4.4 (28).
Maddy Graham starred for the Hawks with three goals while Liberty Graham was named best on ground with one goal to her name in the Brigades' win.
Rovers' Davina Whitney was judged best while her teammates Ella Ricetti, Dainira Papertalk, Mia Allen and Sharntay Westberg were also prominent.
Brigades got off to a flyer in their first quarter with two goals from Graham, getting the Hawks out to a quick lead while Rovers managed only one behind by quarter time.
The Dees were quick to the contest in the first quarter with Westberg booting a major, setting the tone for Rovers getting their day up and running. Rovers managed another early goal in the second term before Brigades snatched two goals of their own.
Brigades went goalless for the rest of the game, failing to convert in front of the big sticks. Rovers managed to land a major midway through the third quarter, finding themselves down by nine points entering the final term.
Another goal by Rovers in the fourth quarter saw them come within three points of the visitors but the Hawks were able to hold off the fighting Dees as Brigades claimed a narrow victory in a low-scoring affair at Greenough Oval.
Rovers now gear up to face Towns in round six while Brigades shift their focus to their upcoming game against Chapman Valley at Mazzuchelli Oval this weekend.
The other game in round five of the GNWFL was between Towns and Railways, which saw the undefeated Bulldogs come away with a big win.
Towns' best on was awarded to Breeanna Hamlett while teammates Emily McAuley, Aaliyah Jones, Jessica Giudice-Nairn and Olivia Bidwell also impressed in the win.
Holly Banes, Charli Bidwell and Jessica Giudice-Nairn all bagged two goals each at the Rec in what was a day to remember for the Bulldogs.
Jasmine Johansen was named best on ground for Railways in the Blues' loss with valiant efforts coming from Abby Green, Hanna Dethlefsen, Grace Freeman and Glenys Butler.
Final score was Towns 8.12 (60) to Railways 2.0 (12).
Railways now face Northampton in Kalbarri this weekend while Towns play Rovers at Greenough Oval in round six.
