GNFL and GNWFL round seven preview: Brigades and Northampton to battle it out in game of the round
Northampton will host Brigades in round seven of the GNFL on Saturday as the Rams aim to build on their impressive performance last weekend against Railways when they fell just short in a four-point thriller. Despite only winning one game so far this season, the Rams managed to get extremely close to causing a big upset against the league leaders Railways in Kalbarri. Northampton showed character in the contest, with coach Jeremy Heberle crediting his side for their resilience and determination. 'Certainly proud of the efforts the boys are showing, we are heading in the right direction,' he said. 'I was really happy with our match-ups and our decision-making in key moments throughout that game. 'We bounced back and tested one of the best teams this year, but we are always looking to improve.' Heberle said his side's work rate off the ball and pressure in defence led to the impressive outing against the undefeated Blues. 'We put a focus on our work rate off the ball and it showed,' Heberle said. 'We worked harder when we didn't have the footy and pressure was high. 'I was really happy with how our players handled the situation and their match-ups.' Now turning their attention to hosting Brigades this weekend, Heberle said the confidence within the playing group was high. 'Confidence is up given that we really took it to Railways in the way that we did last week,' he said. 'We are just looking to focus on ourselves and continue to improve. 'Of course we would like to win every game in the season but as long as we are improving, then we are happy. 'Brigades pose a threat but we are more than capable of matching them. 'Shutting down someone like Dylan Ralph will be key as well as giving some attention to Hayden Johnson.' Currently rounding out the top four, Brigades have two wins to their name against Rovers and Mullewa. Regardless of their win-loss ratio, Brigades showed their potential danger to the top teams with a strong performance against reigning premiers Chapman Valley last weekend. The Hawks put on a show in the third quarter, clawing their way back into the contest as the Royals were caught out briefly with Brigades making the most of the momentum swing. While Chapman Valley proved why they are one of the flag favourites for 2025, running away to win by 18 points, the Royals hadn't been tested like that at home in a quarter since their loss against Railways in round three. Brigades will take their best 22 to Northampton with the hopes of picking up their third win of the year as they look to stay in the top four. The GNWFL game of the round will be played at Greenough Oval on Saturday when Rovers host Railways, with both teams looking to clinch their second win of the season. Railways are coming off their first win in 665 days when they beat Northampton in Kalbarri as the team got their season rolling in 2025. After not fielding a team last year, the Blues are back on the winners' list this season and will be looking to go two in a row when they face the Demons. Rovers, however, are coming off a big loss to flag favourites Towns in what was a tough day at Greenough. This week provides a better match-up for the Demons as they look to pick themselves back up against the Blues at home. Rovers' last win came in round three against Northampton when the Dees rolled over the top of the Rams in stunning fashion, winning by 65 points in what was their first win in over two seasons. GNWFL round five wrap: Brigades and Rovers headline round five in a three-point thriller
Brigades edged out Rovers in a three-point thriller, chalking up back-to-back GNWFL wins as the headline match of round five at Greenough Oval on Saturday. The tight contest went down to the wire with the Hawks winning 4.7 (31) to the Demons 4.4 (28). Maddy Graham starred for the Hawks with three goals while Liberty Graham was named best on ground with one goal to her name in the Brigades' win. Rovers' Davina Whitney was judged best while her teammates Ella Ricetti, Dainira Papertalk, Mia Allen and Sharntay Westberg were also prominent. Brigades got off to a flyer in their first quarter with two goals from Graham, getting the Hawks out to a quick lead while Rovers managed only one behind by quarter time. The Dees were quick to the contest in the first quarter with Westberg booting a major, setting the tone for Rovers getting their day up and running. Rovers managed another early goal in the second term before Brigades snatched two goals of their own. Brigades went goalless for the rest of the game, failing to convert in front of the big sticks. Rovers managed to land a major midway through the third quarter, finding themselves down by nine points entering the final term. Another goal by Rovers in the fourth quarter saw them come within three points of the visitors but the Hawks were able to hold off the fighting Dees as Brigades claimed a narrow victory in a low-scoring affair at Greenough Oval. Rovers now gear up to face Towns in round six while Brigades shift their focus to their upcoming game against Chapman Valley at Mazzuchelli Oval this weekend. The other game in round five of the GNWFL was between Towns and Railways, which saw the undefeated Bulldogs come away with a big win. Towns' best on was awarded to Breeanna Hamlett while teammates Emily McAuley, Aaliyah Jones, Jessica Giudice-Nairn and Olivia Bidwell also impressed in the win. Holly Banes, Charli Bidwell and Jessica Giudice-Nairn all bagged two goals each at the Rec in what was a day to remember for the Bulldogs. Jasmine Johansen was named best on ground for Railways in the Blues' loss with valiant efforts coming from Abby Green, Hanna Dethlefsen, Grace Freeman and Glenys Butler. Final score was Towns 8.12 (60) to Railways 2.0 (12). Railways now face Northampton in Kalbarri this weekend while Towns play Rovers at Greenough Oval in round six.

GNWFL round four wrap: Brigades pick up their first win of the season defeating Railways
A low-scoring affair between Brigades and Railways at GBSC Sports Park headlined round four of the GNWFL, which saw the Hawks take out the contest by 14 points on Saturday. Maddy Graham starred for the Hawks at home with an impressive two-goal performance, which helped her side in the low-scoring contest against the Blues. Teammates Hayley Gibson and Tahlia Singleton were the other two goal kickers for Brigades, with one apiece. Railways' two goals were kicked in the first half of the game, with Charlotte Crawford and Hanna Dethlefsen being the lone scorers for the Blues in a tight contest. It was an arm wrestle from the start with neither team able to pull away in the first quarter with both chalking up a goal apiece on the scoreboard. The Hawks failed to score a major in the second as Railways added one to their total going into half-time leading the home side. Brigades pulled away in the third quarter after trailing by seven points going into half-time before kicking their way back into the game. With goals hard to come by for both sides, accuracy proved to be vital with Brigades managing to convert their opportunities. The Hawks managed to kick one major in the fourth, putting an end to the contest as the home side went into the sheds with a win under their belt, their first for the season. The final score was Brigades 4.5 (29) to Railways 2.3 (15). The other game in round four of the GNWFL was between Rovers and Chapman Valley as the Demons played host to the in-form Royals. It was a tough day for Rovers as they came off their first win in two seasons in round three against Northampton last week, but this week was a different story coming up against a strong outfit in Chapman Valley. The Demons only managed one behind for the game as the Royals locked the ball in their attacking 50. The final score was a demolition, with Rovers 0.1 (1) to Chapman Valley 19.13 (127). Northampton and Towns shared the bye.

GNWFL round three wrap: Rovers end two season drought with big win over Northampton
After two whole winless seasons, Rovers' women finally broke the drought, kickstarting their campaign with a 65-point win over Northampton on Saturday at Greenough Oval. Going into the weekend, Rovers knew this was their first real chance at securing a win in season 2025. They got off to a quick start with a five-goal first quarter and never looked back, with Sharntay Westberg (four goals), Dainira Papertalk, Davina Whitney, Nadine Ryan and Sharlie Townsend doing the damage. Northampton were left to rue their inaccuracy as Rovers swept to victory, 10.10 (70) to 0.5 (5). Rovers coach Joe Iaria said the squad had been working towards this goal for a long time. 'Perseverance really pays off and the ladies really showed that over the weekend,' he said. 'They never quit over the last two seasons and the youth who have come through are really playing at their best.' It was a slower second quarter from the Demons as Northampton managed to stem the bleeding, only conceding one goal in the term, while for the Rams, poor kicking in front of goal made the half-time score Rovers 6.3 (39) to Northampton 0.3 (3). Rovers picked up where they left off in the third term, adding another two goals to the tally as the Northampton backs were under constant fire from the Demons' mids and forwards. All the Rams could manage in the term was one behind. Another two-goal quarter for Rovers then secured the win. Now facing the daunting task of taking on Chapman Valley, Iaria said the team would continue to build as the season progressed and they welcomed the challenge. 'Massive challenge this weekend, we will continue to be competitive this week and everyone is fighting for a spot on the team,' he said. 'We want to be the hunters not the hunted anymore.' Best on ground for the defeated Rams were Tayte Pappin, Millie Gerreyn, Kara Elliott, Shelby Gavin and Shakiah Forsyth. In the other GNWFL match of the round, Chapman Valley defeated Railways 19.10 (124) to 1.0 (6). Towns and Brigades had byes.
